Aether Ascendant

Chapter 2: CHAPTER 2: USELESS ABILITY

Kael's eyes slowly opened, and he was met with the harsh reality of his dingy, cramped room. The walls seemed to close in on him, and the air was thick with the smell of mold and decay. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes, revealing the familiar sight of peeling wallpaper and a lone, flickering light bulb that cast eerie shadows on the walls. This was his life as an orphan, living on the fringes of society, always struggling to make ends meet.

Memories flooded his mind, memories that weren't entirely his own. He recalled being a 15-year-old boy, waiting anxiously for his ability to awaken. In the world of Etheria, every person developed a unique ability at the age of 15, ranging from F to SSS rank. The ranking system was a measure of one's potential, and it determined their place in society. Those with higher ranks were revered and respected, while those with lower ranks were often shunned and marginalized.

Kael's thoughts trailed off as he remembered the day his ability awakened. He had been so excited, hoping for something powerful, something that would make him special. He had dreamed of being a hero, of saving people and making a difference. But instead, he awoke with a G rank ability: Adaptation. It allowed him to... adjust to normal temperatures. That was it. No flashy powers, no elemental control, just a useless ability that made him an outcast.

The memories of his predecessor's struggles and humiliation washed over Kael. He remembered the days of being bullied and belittled, of being treated like a freak. The other kids would tease him, calling him names like "Useless" and "Weakling." Even the teachers seemed to turn a blind eye to his plight, as if they too believed he was worthless.

Kael's predecessor had tried to make the best of it, to find ways to use his ability to his advantage. But it was hard when everyone around him seemed to have abilities that could change the world, while his was barely noticeable. He felt like a failure, like he didn't belong in this world.

As Kael stood up, brushing off the dust from his worn-out clothes, he felt a sense of determination wash over him. He would not let his predecessor's fate be his own. He would find a way to make a difference, to prove himself. But for now, he had to get ready for another day of school, another day of being belittled and bullied.

Kael walked over to the small, cracked mirror that hung on the wall. He stared at his reflection, taking in the familiar sight of his messy brown hair and brown eyes. He looked like any other 15-year-old boy, but he knew he was different. He was a reincarnated soul, with memories of a life that wasn't his own.

As he got dressed, Kael's thoughts turned to the world outside. Etheria was a world of wonder and danger, where abilities could be both a blessing and a curse. The four powerful families - the Emberlyn, the Fulmen, the Elyria, and the Umbra - ruled the world, each with their own unique abilities and agendas. And then there were the monsters, creatures that emerged from the rifts that had opened up around the world, threatening the very fabric of society.

Kael sighed, feeling the weight of the world bearing down on him. He knew he had a long way to go, but he was determined to make a difference. He would find a way to overcome his limitations, to become stronger. And maybe, just maybe, he would become a hero.
