Chapter 5: 5. The weird kid
I think I could've done better for a first impression.
We stood there staring at each other for a good 30 seconds before I had to speak up again.
"Hello? Can you understand me? I'm pretty sure I got the right language. Is it a volume thing?" 'Scarab, turn up my volume by 40%'.
"HEY!" I yell while waving.
Yeah, yeah. So very weird. Well, I gotta be the "Mysterious Alien Mentor", so I'm starting with the whole Alien thing.
"Argh! Alright, Alright! We can hear ya!" Said the big robot, who had one arm remaining.
"Oh great! So, how are you? Are you perhaps in need of some repairs? No, wait... there are little things inside you! Are those hurting you?!" I say as I swim towards the neck area of the robot, the area where the pilots stood in Victorian Nemean.
"Whoa whoa whoa, wait up!" The robot starts back up, the blade in its remaining arm retracting and transforming into a cannon, already beginning to shine. "Stop right there!"
I stop and hang my head to the side, curious. "OK?"
The robot seemed surprised that I stopped, but kept pointing its cannon towards me. 'If they do shoot, we can deal with that, right Scarab?'
Yes. The energy will be absorbed, converted, and stored for later use.
Good to know.
"So uh... what are you? What are you doing here?"
"I just got here! And I am Globglogabgalab! Are you what is called A Human?" I say looking at the robot's eyes.
'Can you connect to the internet Scarab?'
Certainly.
'... well, connect to it, please. Also, can you be a little more proactive?' Having to ask for everything is going to get old really fast otherwise.
Understood. Connecting now...
Some information on my HUD is updated, a map shows me we are some 300 KM (186 miles) off the coast of Alaska, deep into the Gulf of Alaska. The date is 14/03/2011, 03:24 AM AKDT.
'While I deal with this, please search for their frequency. If possible, search for more information on these monsters as well.'
On it.
{He is always so serious~} Anyways...
"Globgo-what? And what do you mean "Just got here"? Are you one of them aliens!?"
"Well... according to your dictionary, an alien can be 1: an extraterrestrial being. 2: a foreigner. 3: a person who is estranged or excluded-"
"Yeah yeah yeah! You can stop yappin'. So you an alien, like not from here Earth?" The cannon shines brighter.
"By that definition, yes I am what your culture calls "Alien". Now tell me, why are you Humans hiding inside the metal construct?"
Just as it seems like Vic is going to shoot, Gypsy limps towards it. "Vic, wait!"
"What is it Becket!? I've got it in my sights, just have to shoot it!"
"If that thing killed the Kaiju easily like that, do you really think your cannon will do anything to it?" Comes a voice from that Jeager.
Scarab found some things on the internet. Apparently, these robots are called Jaegers by the people and there are quite a few of them around. It seems like these "Rifts" as people call them, are somewhat normal here. Several years back (circa 2003) they started appearing and these monsters called 'Kaiju' started coming out of them. At first, things were pretty bad, with Kaiju attacking cities and devastating entire coasts before they were put down.
Over the years, the military developed the Jaegers to fight against these Kaiju and they haven't stopped coming since.
Victorian Nemean (cool name by the way) thought about it for a moment and, seeing that I hadn't moved, decided to trust the Becket Brothers and lowered his cannon, the energy in it dispersing.
"We still can't just let this lil' thing go like that Gypsy. What do we do?"
"First, we need to take Gypsy back to base. If we take too long it might not even be worth fixing."
"Damn! Ok, ok, come on! We can't let Gypsy die like that!" Vic walked toward Gypsy and lifted it over its good shoulder, fireman carry style.
Right before they go, they turn toward me and say, "You coming, lil' Alien?"
"Oh, sure!" And I slowly swim by their side the rest of the way.
-----------------------------------------------
While we had some distance to cover, I tried to go over my powers and the tools I could use. No matter what I won't allow myself to be a guinea pig.
Sure, I'll play the somewhat clueless alien, but I have a bottom line. I'll see if I can learn how these Jaegers work and maybe improve them? I'm not that smart, but I do have the EVO nanites and the Scarab. With the technomancy and the scan, I should be able to glean some things and improve others.
While I would love to work on Haki and Aura, I believe they take time to develop. At least Aura I can just deploy to have another layer of protection, Haki on the other hand... yeah.
Now onto the immediately important things...
'Hello?'
Hello.
{Hii~}
'Ok, that's not gonna be easy to get used to. So, hello I'm Matt and it's... nice to meet you?'
Hello, Matt. I am an Artificial Intelligence based on your personality, set with the parameters to be 'Cold' and 'Pragmatic'. I exist to assist you in any way I can and will do so to the best of my capabilities. I am based on and fixed to the Scarab Beetle, being able to interact with exterior systems but not change 'servers'. I can control the Beetle when away from your body should you wish to. I do not recommend you do so as your body is currently equal to the average 16-year-old human, so your physical integrity may be compromised without the Scarab's protection. It is 'nice' to meet you formally and I hope our cooperation is long and prosperous.
{Such a stick in the mud... Anyway, HII~! I'm your friendly neighborhood Symbiote and now you and I are one! I don't have a name as we symbiotes usually don't care for such things, but if you want to name what we together become, that would be awesome! I even have some suggestions: BlueIce popsicle, NightwingWannabe, Bruised One, and Blue Cotton Candy! I'm just waiting for your input, I'm fine with any of these! Tehee~}
Ok, so they can talk a lot. 'Yeah, as I said nice to meet you. I hope we can come to a healthy and long relationship of companionship and yadda yadda, you know how it is.'
'Real questions now: Symby, I know you don't need the phenethylamine in human brains anymore... how do I even remember the name? Ah, Clarity of Mind. Ahem... You don't need to eat brains and are not afraid/weak to fire or extreme noise, right?'
{Yep! It's weird like always feeling full. It's good! And no fear as well~}
'The tentacles I saw a bit of before but I'll be testing more later... Now, Scarab can you connect to the EVO nanites? Try to connect to the few I'll try to extend away from my finger, just in case.'
On it.
I create a tiny string of EVO nanites, just above my pointer finger, while still inside the Scarab Suit. The suit tries to communicate with it and I feel a strange feeling. It feels like someone is knocking at my door, except it's my body. The first reaction of the nanites is to try and adapt to block it, which is good to know. I tentatively allow the communion. Feels like instead of the Scarab taking control and dominating the nanites, it tries to analyze it. Like they're each trying to understand the other first so one of them can have 'dominance', so to speak.
'Scarab, let up a bit.'
Understood.
Immediately I feel the nanites analyzing and understanding the technology in the Scarab Beetle. I can feel how each and every nanorobot is connected and built, how they interface with each other, how they send electrical signals to each other, and how there is an incredibly powerful yet impossibly small energy source that interacts with all the nanorobots and-
{Hey hey hey! No nosebleeding if it's not for girls~!}
I was so focused on the huge amount of information that just came to my head that I hadn't noticed. My nose is bleeding and I feel pressure in my head. 'Fuuuck'. As I thought I would have a killer headache, all the information seems to 'click' in place and the pain starts vanishing. The Scarab cleans the blood from my nose.
It seems like after analyzing the technology it 'compresses' itself to a more manageable level in my head. I can access the information, but it feels like an Iota of information to sift through. Still, I go through it searching for specific things.
'Ok, here they are.' Something akin to a security or 'factory reset' code. I know Scarab wouldn't betray me (it's literally in the Starlight book) but the procedure I'll allow it to do is incredibly invasive. Molecular levels of invasive. So, just in case, I'll keep these codes in my own mind at all times so I can do a 'clean install'. You never know when a Brainiac lookalike will appear... huh, I'm not in DC then. Funny.
'Ok, everyone now knows the codes. Scarab, Symby, remember that. Also, Scarab, put those codes in a section that you alone without my own confirmation cannot alter. Just in case.'
Your prudence is well reasoned.
{Paranoic control freak... just like I like 'em~!!}
Ahem. 'Ok, you can analyze and if possible integrate the EVO nanites into your control. Just some directives: Do not resist control when I try to use the nanites without your input. If any action that I take with the nanites would wind up doing me harm, immediately or in the long term, warn me instead of wrestling control from me. If the warning is not heeded or reasoned with in any way, then you have my permission to stop the process and return operations to normal. Otherwise... the control is yours. Do not misplace my trust.'
A feeling like before assaults me and this time I open the door and let the feeling in. It feels like being watched naked for a few moments, but then like my whole body was microscopically controlled by something. After a few minutes of this extremely uncomfortable feeling, everything returns to normal.
I will not harm you or anything that may be beneficial to you, without your personal input. All nanites are analyzed and communication is stable. Fusion is currently possible, but the chance of failure is 48,2%. Further time analyzing and interconnecting between systems is recommended.
'Knowing that the two can fuse is already great news. Keep up the good work, Scarab.'
{Why are you boys so~ serious? Isn't it just the risk of the A.I. taking over his body? What if I take over his body?}
'...'
...
'So, Scarab you can continue with the analysis.'
At once.
{Hey~! Don't ignore me!!!}
------------------------------------------
Technological shenanigans aside, on to the big ones.
'Scarab... I'll call you Caby from now on. Caby, monitor my biological responses. I'll try the shards.'
I have to thank past me for getting MultiTask-Master. Due to that talent, I can keep basic control of my body while I perform these experiments. Otherwise, I would most likely look dumb bumping into the Jaegers now and then.
These powers... scare me about the same amount as they excite me. But I will not forget that I was the one to choose them and they are now my boons to use and share or banes to bear and hide.
Taking in an unnecessary deep breath, I release it and try activating another 'switch' in my mind. These are very different from any other up until now. There are two of them.
I press the one for biokinesis.
Immediately I feel like I can 'see' my whole body, with a scary amount of precision. Everything makes sense, every little thing is in its place and working as is intended. I see the EVO nanites and they strike me as different than what was supposed to be there, yet they are not 'wrong' per se. Closer to using another answer to get the same result.
I see my muscles fused with a peculiar black goo. My bones, muscles, organs, and pretty much all my tissues are reinforced by the nanites. My nervous system is interconnected to both the black goo and also to the big 'intrusions' at my spine. Those same intrusions are slowly being less and less recognized as such, being slowly accommodated by the nanites.
And the best part? No headaches. No infodump in my brain, no overload. No, this is different. It seems like it's meant to be like this. And better yet, I haven't even started changing things. I feel it at the edge of my grip.
The power to change whatever I want.
...within my body. Still, cool as fuck!
Reminder: Individual Lisa recommended deep study and understanding before biological alterations.
'Yeah, yeah. I know.' I flip the switch off and nothing seems off. I don't even feel tired. Good to know. Now the weird one-
{Oh no! The time for experimenting is over boys~.}
Ah, we're getting to shore. 'Note: experiment extensevely later. Tattletale's shard has not been experimented with yet.'
Note taken.
{If you have a perfect memory, why do you set up notes?}
...
Remembering everything does not mean that everything is a priority all the time. Thus, the notes.
What he said!
