ace the conqueror

Chapter 5: Chapter 5: Echoes of the Past

Ace sat in silence, his small form resting beneath the shade of a massive tree, the sounds of the forest around him calming but not quite enough to quiet the storm of thoughts inside his head. His fingers curled around the grass, and his gaze drifted aimlessly, but his mind? It was far from idle.

*I remember...* The thought came, unbidden but undeniable.

Ace's eyes flickered, a shadow of something ancient and familiar passing over them. The voice wasn't like someone else speaking to him—it was his own voice, but not the voice of the child he had become. This was the voice of someone else—someone he had once been, someone whose life he had lived before.

*It's strange, isn't it? To be here again, in this new life. But there's something... so familiar about it all.*

Ace tilted his head, not entirely surprised. These thoughts, these strange recollections from his first life, were starting to feel like an echo, a shadow in his mind. He could feel them in the back of his mind, as if they were his own, yet distant and separate at the same time.

*My first life... I was different then. An otaku, a martial artist—so passionate, so full of excitement. Always chasing the thrill of the fight.* The voice stirred in his mind again, but Ace wasn't frightened. He wasn't alarmed. It was like a distant memory he could never quite escape.

He let the recollection play out, the memories flooding his mind.

Back then, Ace had been a young man, full of dreams of becoming the strongest. He had been obsessed with martial arts, devouring every piece of knowledge he could, training his body relentlessly. He had wanted to be like the heroes in the anime and manga he loved—unstoppable, unbeatable. Every fight, every challenge, had been another step toward the strength he craved. He had imagined himself capable of overcoming anything.

But then, the tiger. That memory, the one that still lingered despite all this time.

*You remember the tiger, don't you? The one you couldn't defeat?*

The image formed in Ace's mind: a large, powerful beast, faster than he could have anticipated. Ace had been hunting, ready to prove his worth, but the moment he had thought he was in control, the tiger pounced.

He had struggled. He fought with all he had, but the tiger was stronger. It had been over before he even realized it. The pain, the rush of fear, the knowledge that he wasn't as strong as he thought—everything had rushed at him in that final moment.

*You were so sure you could handle it, but you were wrong. So wrong.*

Ace closed his eyes, letting the memory sink in. *I wasn't strong enough,* he thought to himself. *I thought I could fight anything... but I died. Weak. That was the reality.*

*You didn't understand what true strength was,* the voice continued, but there was no malice in it, only a sense of truth, a reflection on the past. *You were reckless, but you learned. You were given a second chance, and now you know. You're not that same person anymore.*

Ace's chest rose with a deep breath, and he opened his eyes again, a strange calm washing over him. The voice in his mind wasn't mocking him. It wasn't another personality—it was the remnants of a life that still lived inside of him, a part of his consciousness that had carried over.

*I'm not that person anymore,* Ace affirmed to himself.

He glanced down at his small hands, his fingers gripping the grass tightly. The sense of power that he had begun to feel, the connection to something far greater than just a child's body—it was growing stronger every day. His body was no longer just a vessel. It was an instrument, a weapon that he could control.

"I'm not weak anymore," Ace whispered softly, the words feeling solid in his chest.

*No, you're not.* The voice within him responded, not harshly, but as a reminder. *But you still have so much to learn. Strength is not just power. It's understanding. It's control. It's using what you have for something more than yourself.*

Ace nodded, his small frame seeming to swell with quiet determination. The voice, that lingering presence of his past self, was a reminder. A guide. But it wasn't separate from him. It was a reflection of his own potential, his own unfulfilled dreams from that life.

"I won't let that happen again," Ace said, his voice steady with resolve. "I'll become stronger. I'll protect others. I won't make the same mistakes again."

*That's right.* The voice in his mind felt almost approving, like an ancient memory that had been reawakened. *This time, you'll be different. You'll rise above it all.*

Ace stood up, the world around him still and serene, but in his heart, something had changed. His resolve had solidified. He wasn't the same person anymore, but he could feel the weight of those past memories pushing him forward. He would grow stronger, not just for himself, but for everyone who needed him. And this time, when the danger came, he wouldn't falter.

He wasn't the prey anymore.

"I'll rise above everything," Ace said firmly to the silent forest around him. "This is only the beginning."

And as the words left his lips, he could almost feel the weight of the world shifting, as if his future was finally being set into motion.
