Chapter 11
-'Smack!'
"Jinwoo, hurry up and start the car!"
"Huh? Didn't you say there was no scoop?"
-'Thwack!'
"Do you even live without looking at your phone? Don't you know how crazy things are right now with Yun Seong-ho's death!"
At a broadcasting station, a reporter struck what appeared to be a rookie with a file folder.
"Hurry and start the car first, we need to head straight to the XX Funeral Hall."
Immediately, an old van from the broadcasting station departed for the XX Funeral Hall where Chairman Yun Seong-ho's funeral was being held.
"But, is there anything to cover at the funeral hall?"
"Ah, come to think of it, is this your first time? At a funeral hall."
"Yes."
To the junior reporter driving the car towards the funeral hall, the senior reporter began to slowly explain what kind of stories could be gathered there.
"At a Hero's funeral, we capture the mourning; at a villain's funeral, the criticism and ridicule; and at the funerals of the rich, we capture the families fighting tooth and nail over the inheritance."
".............Still, someone died, isn't it a bit much for people to be scrambling for the inheritance?"
The junior reporter mumbled, sounding somewhat unconvinced, but...
"You fool, this is an era where people will sell out their dead family for money. Don't you know they need to whine and do media play there, saying 'I loved our family more~', so they have an advantage later in the inheritance battle?"
Unable to respond to the words that followed, he could only enter the funeral hall.
"But... did the Yun Seong-ho family have an heir?"
"I don't know, Hero Lee Seol-hwa left home and is active on her own. I heard he has a daughter who's currently the age of a Raon Academy student...... Ah, that must be her over there."
"It's pitiful, experiencing being surrounded by maternal and paternal relatives at such a young age....... Huh?"
The reporters had entered the funeral hall expecting the usual dogfight over inheritance, but they were slightly surprised by the unexpectedly quiet atmosphere.
Normally, it should have been chaotic enough for mourning clothes to come undone during fierce fights... but the majority of the visitors were just eating Yukgaejang in silence, as if possessed by ghosts, before leaving.
This included the Kim Family, whose influence had been soaring right after embracing Yun Seong-ho.
Thinking it wiser to interview someone from the Kim Family, who would likely absorb most of Yun Seong-ho's assets, rather than the girl who must be out of her mind due to her father's death, the press corps requested interviews with the Kim Family members.
Most reporters chose this route.
"Sea seems to be in great shock because her uncle passed away. We, the Kim Family, plan to protect her until she can collect her thoughts. We'll also arrange her return schedule to the Academy slowly."
"Yes, thank you for the interview."
After finishing the interview, the reporters watched Yun Sea laboriously enter the chief mourner's room.
"........Let's go back. Staying longer will just drain our energy."
"....."
"Haa.... I didn't expect the funeral hall atmosphere to be like this."
"Senior, what happens to that girl now?"
The junior reporter, now riding in the van heading back, asked the senior reporter.
"What do you think will happen? Looks like she'll hand over all the shares she inherited to the Kim Family and either join them or have it taken away. Though, once she graduates from Raon Academy, she'll be sought after everywhere, so maybe she won't necessarily join the Kim Family."
"It seems like the battles over shares in large corporations are... quite fierce."
-'Vroooooom....!'
As they exchanged questions, the car started, and the broadcasting station reporters began their journey back.
"If that girl were just a little older, or if Hero Lee Seol-hwa had been there, the Kim Family wouldn't have even been able to approach. It's just unfortunate, that's all."
"What should we do about the article content?"
"Just roughly ask GPT to write it. What the public wants is dopamine anyway. If a problem arises, we can just delete it, so focus on getting it up as quickly as possible."
".....Yes, well."
Just as the junior reporter gripping the steering wheel worried about the girl named Yun Sea, who would be left alone and lonely.
"Sea, wouldn't you like to talk with your cousin for a bit......"
"Not interested."
'Ah, that bastard, seriously, how long is he going to keep this shit up.'
In reality, that very girl was chewing toughly on beef jerky, praying for this funeral to end soon.
...
...
...
For three days, it was truly boring and tedious.
Seriously, if I hadn't brought my laptop, I might have died of boredom.
On the first day, the Kim Family members didn't demand the shares as if asking for money they'd deposited.
At first, they pretended to worry about Yun Seong-ho, saying not to worry because I'd be living with the Kim Family from now on.
Even though I could just stay in the Academy dorms, they kept trying to persuade me to stay at their house...
On the second day, they started revealing their true intentions.
Most of the maternal relatives asked if Yun Seong-ho had left anything specifically for me.
It seemed that since Madam Kim Gyeoul had gone to Lee Seol-hwa, they thought I was the only one left who could receive the shares.
The third day was truly spectacular.
Was it the third son of the Kim Family?
Anyway, that person suddenly showed up and threatened that if I didn't hand over all the shares, he'd make sure I couldn't see the light of day in South Korea ever again... I kindly arranged for him to meet the same end as Yun Seong-ho.
I think an article came out saying he died falling off a bridge over the Han River while drunk driving on his way back.
It wasn't an unnecessary killing; it was a necessary choice. That guy becomes a villain later on anyway.
Thanks to that third son, they realized there was some significant backing behind me, and the Kim Family's demands for shares, which were more like threats, quickly disappeared... so it wasn't the wrong choice.
Afterwards, realizing there was nothing more to gain, the Kim Family didn't even attend the rest of the funeral and just left.
They probably ran off to Lee Seol-hwa, who was holding onto Madam Kim Gyeoul—the very person they had driven to ruin—to try and get the shares.
'Well, she'll handle it herself.'
I know the Kim Family's stake in Yuseong Group is around 9-10%.
It seems Yun Seong-ho gave them that much on the condition they wouldn't ask for anything more... Did they think Madam Kim Gyeoul wouldn't even come near Yuseong Group because they'd already gaslighted her beforehand, even if she received the shares?
With a 40% stake, one could control Yuseong Group, so it seemed natural they approached me so humbly.
Having failed, I can easily picture the Kim Family pestering Madam Kim Gyeoul, who holds 30%, demanding her shares.
Since the two of them were likely getting along fine in the safe house anyway, I wasn't concerned.
They probably wouldn't even reach the front gate.
As far as I know, the only ability users among the Kim Family members are the third son who took a dive into the Han River while drunk driving, and the twin daughters who are taking the Raon Academy entrance exam next year.
'Honestly, the shares don't really matter that much...'
I know how to manage money well enough.
I could register the copyrights for many undeveloped potions and monopolize specific potion markets like Yun Seong-ho did.
Or I could pour my entire fortune into stocks that will later skyrocket and become a stock market millionaire.
However, for me, who must prevent this world from reaching a bad ending, Yuseong Group serves as a massive bulwark.
It can be a huge lifeline, allowing me to support the Protagonist under the company's name, and it can provide the foundation for my own growth.
If you're going to dig a mountain, isn't it easier to start with a bunch of mining machines rather than just one shovel?
Developing undeveloped potions can also be done much faster within Yuseong Group.
And investments are much more advantageous when made at the corporate level.
Yuseong Group is the world's number one potion manufacturing company.
Naturally, if the company faces checks through tax sanctions or seizures, it can relocate to another country without much issue.
Therefore, the South Korean government is barely keeping Yuseong Group in the country with carrots, not sticks.
It's best to hold onto Yuseong Group as much as possible. That's the conclusion I reached.
'Of course, Yun Seong-ho was terrible at politics, so he got pushed around a lot.'
Quite a few S-Rank hunters visited during the funeral.
Most were from high-ranking guilds, and one guild even stopped by before a Gate subjugation.
Spiral Guild, Sun Guild, Chongun Guild, Changhae Guild, roughly those.
At least the Vice Guild Master or higher visited from most guilds, and I was slightly surprised that Ryu Seong-ho, the Guild Master of Spiral Guild, personally visited.
Thanks to that, perhaps, I got to leisurely observe the heroes who would later help the protagonist protect not just South Korea but the world, like watching celebrities.
"......You didn't really need to come."
"Seems that way. Just think of it as being dragged here by my grandfather."
On the fifth day of the funeral, people from the Academy also came.
From Gang Ayul to her grandfather, the Sword Saint, other S-Rank Heroes, and faculty members whose lives had been saved thanks to potions mainly visited.
They just stayed for a reasonable amount of time and left. Gang Ayul looked like she had something to say to me, but she ultimately didn't voice it and just went back.
Lee Seol-hwa and Madam Kim Gyeoul were diligently keeping their promise not to appear before me, so they didn't come to the funeral hall.
I decided to simply send Yun Seong-ho to a columbarium. Given the Kim Family's nature, they probably wouldn't maintain Yun Seong-ho's grave site anyway, and managing it myself was bothersome.
And so, after entrusting all subsequent matters to the funeral hall staff, just as I was leisurely packing my things to prepare for what came next.....
-'Creak'
"What, am I too late?"
A woman appeared, opening the door.
'.....I thought she wouldn't come.'
Long blonde hair reaching her knees, and an outfit so revealing that if it weren't for the black robe enveloping her body, one wouldn't know if she was naked or half-naked.
The Director of Raon Academy, and South Korea's S-Rank Hero, the 'Great Sage'.
"Uh..... You're the Student Council President, right?"
"Yes, Director Eve."
It was the appearance of Eve Meitner, who held the epithet 'Golden Witch'.
