chapter 8
8 – First battle (2)
After a magnificent trumpet sounded for about 30 seconds, both friendly and enemy soldiers dressed in their armor stood on the battlefield.
Then, the division commanders of the Reich Imperial Army and the Francois Republic exchanged back and forth, swearing at each other, mentioning each other’s country, division commander’s family, and personal wealth.
Although it was emotionally difficult for me to do that right before the start of the war, as I have the sensibility of a modern person.
The Reich Imperial Academy taught that blaming each other like this is a great help in conducting war.
Because soldiers who have nothing to gain from war, let alone have the sensibility to protect their country, do not even have a reason to fight, so their only interest is to return home quickly without dying.
However, I learned that when the division commander criticizes the enemy instead, making them think that we are stronger than the opponent, and when they are criticized by the opponent, it has the effect of boosting morale and reducing the fear of death by burning hatred toward the enemy who cursed them.
In addition, it is written that the enemy commander may lose his temper due to anger, although there are very few cases where a person who can become a commander of an army is only distracted by a pad lip.
In any case, the soldiers reacted more violently than expected even at the low level of criticism, which was incomparable to the flame swearing in Korea.
“Damn the Francois! Is it because the Reich Empire’s sausages are just the size of our thumbs?”
“Things to tear! Just kill them all!”
“Still, didn’t you say that these commanders are ragtags who fight by the collar every day? I will win easily.”
I have often heard that the concentration of knowledge is different between contacting with theory and experiencing directly.
If it’s this effective, as a platoon leader, I’ll have to tell them something with a Korean spirit.
Also, in this world, as in the Middle Ages and modern Europe, it is polite to show a gentlemanly appearance in front of a woman, but speaking like a real man without hesitation on the battlefield is considered a culture.
It’s good to exhale hard once.
“Attention Jaeger Platoon! The reason the commanders and soldiers of the Francois Republic say our dicks are the size of sausages is because they’re the size they’ve seen all their lives. Shouldn’t a man be taught how to fight on his way to the end of things that barely function as a man?”

Laughter broke out among the soldiers, and soon there was the sound of drums and flags ordering the entire army to charge.
“Well then, if we fight as we have trained so far, we can win. Surely there is no coward here who would be frightened by the magic and arrows fired by these poor bastards who almost lost their men?! Advance!”
At the same time, our company marched slowly towards the enemy at the head of the battalion.
The soldiers of the Francois Republic Army also began to approach at the same speed as us.
To be honest, every step I took, I felt overwhelmed by the atmosphere of the battlefield and the unique sense of intimidation given by the tens of thousands of people including both armies.
With an honest heart, I wanted to face-to-face with the Francois as soon as possible even for a second, and I even thought that if I ran wild on the front line, I would feel better, and I wanted to run with all my might.
If you can’t distinguish when to run with all your strength and when not to, you may not be able to fight due to lack of strength when it really matters.
As I was moving slowly, holding my breath and holding my breath, I saw arrows and magic flying towards each other from both sides.
If you don’t gradually increase your speed, your allies will be killed by more magic and arrows before you can engage the enemy.
Just in time, the company commander seemed to think so, and shouted out loudly, delivering orders with flags and drums.
“There are more bastards who die from being hit by magic or arrows than from being stabbed by spears! Speed up! Go to Breaking News!”
It is human instinct to feel that it is much more frightening to charge into a square of spearmen densely packed than an invisible arrow flying from afar.
As proof of this, most people automatically close their eyes if they aim at their face with a fist or baseball bat at close range, but if they aim at their face with a gun at a distance, they will try to avoid closing their eyes instead of closing their eyes…
From ancient times to modern warfare, it has always been long-range weapons that kill the most people.
One day, when I was studying war history, there was a record that according to Japanese war history, there were two to three times more people killed by arrows and rifles than people killed by spears or swords.
However, after running at full speed for a distance of a few hundred meters, when you run into enemy spearmen, your strength is exhausted, and when you face the enemy spearmen, you are going to be their food, so is this the best?
“Jaeger platoon, speed up as the company commander commands! Speed up if you don’t want to be a red-hot hedgehog hit by arrows and magic! But don’t just run because you’re scared!”
At the same time, our company, no, both the Reich Imperial Army and the Francois Republic Army increased their marching speed.
Uncountable numbers of arrows, fire, and various magics such as lightning rushed toward Yanggun like a wave.
It would have been a spectacular sight in a movie, but it is no different from a cosmic horror in the eyes of the warring parties.
And not long after, the screams of soldiers hit by arrows and magic were heard.
“Ahh!”
“mom! it hurts!! help me!!”
Pretending not to know them, or pretending not to hear them, there was no time to pay attention to them, who might be allies and possibly members of the same platoon.
Because even now, arrows and magic are pouring down like rain.
By the time we ran 150 meters, which felt like an eternity, and the distance between us was close to 50 meters.
Allied wizards and enemy wizards, along with soldiers carrying large shields, began to rush forward across the gaps in each troop formation.
The wizards were already running while chanting, and the shield-bearing soldiers went in front of them and covered themselves with their shields.
“The wizards are trying to shoot magic at our platoon! When they reach out their wands and bodies to fire their magic, the crossbowmen aim and shoot them all at once! Your comrade’s life is in your hands!”
The guys with the crossbows in the back moved to a position where they could aim at the enemy wizards, avoiding the friendly wizards as if they knew it.
When enemy wizards try to fire their magic at our platoon.
“Die, you damned savvy bastards!”
The arrows shot by the crossbowmen hit the enemy mages, and the friendly mages pierced the formations of the enemy infantry company.
The morale of the enemy infantry fell when they saw that our company was intact, although several enemy soldiers were reduced to black coals or hit by flying stones and collapsed in shape.
“Jaeger Platoon fights against the enemy like me. Don’t be afraid, just follow the training and you’ll easily win! Prepare to walk through the window in the first row of the platoon! Charge in!”
And our platoon moved according to my command, just as it was shown in the mock battle.
When the 1st row completely removes the enemy’s long spears and there is a gap, the soldiers in the 2nd row take advantage of the gap and stab them all at once.

Let’s stab it like that, and among the enemy soldiers, as many as 4 of them died in the first attack.
Was it because he shot and killed a wizard in real life for the first time, and was also active in battles between spearmen?
The trembling and nervousness I felt when I first stood on the battlefield disappeared before I knew it, and I felt that I could do anything.
Of course, thoughts are just thoughts, and if you try to fill your lungs with air for no reason, you will be stabbed and searched unseemly by the enemy.
I have no intention of going wild beyond what my unit and I can do.
However, the ability of the units that became one body in a ritual was more than I thought, and the center of attack of the company began to focus on our platoon before I knew it.
We sent a flag signal to see if we were too useless, but the company commander replied ‘You can fight as is’.
And our platoon continued to drive the enemy with the momentum, and by the time they had annihilated a considerable number of enemy soldiers.
Along with the sound of drums, the signal for the shift of the follow-up company commander behind me was sent.
It’s just the right timing, considering that standing in the vanguard for too long can leave your soldiers exhausted and unable to fight.
If you get more greedy here, you may end up in trouble.
“Crossbowmen shoot the enemy spearmen first. After that, the first row walks through the spear once like when they first entered, and the second row stabs the enemy and goes to rest!”
After earning time to switch with the follow-up units, all members of the 4th Company returned to the rear and were given time to rest.
The entire battalion was largely divided into three groups: an attack group, a rear guard group, and a rest group. The vanguard group could rest for about 30 minutes thanks to the exemption from rear guard.
Sergeant Schmidt and other members of the platoon could have boasted of their feats or mourned for their dead comrades, but probably were so exhausted that they stretched out on the ground to rest or quietly drank water.
I think it’s because I’m exhausted and I can’t afford to do that.
I also wanted to stretch out on the ground and rest like them, but seeing the enemy break through unexpectedly easily reminded me of a strategy that would allow me to set up a military attack.
I went to the company commander and said.
“Squadron commander, I thought of a good strategy, can you review it?”
It’s not a very good attitude to suggest a strategy during a short break for a company commander who has been fighting for 15 minutes.
Fighting to the death, shouldn’t we suffer a little more and get a chance to get promoted by leaving behind achievements?
