Chapter 31. Would You Be a Princess Consort? The Disgraced Kind (1)
“188, thinking about what might happen next, I really don’t want to be this princess consort.”
At that moment, Shen Wan was sitting properly on a couch, dressed in a bright red wedding gown with a red veil covering her face, waiting for her groom to come and lift the veil.
The wedding night should be joyful and beautiful. But for the original owner of this body, this night marked the beginning of a tragic fate. From this night on, she would face scorn from her family and condemnation from the world. Her husband would despise her and even carve flesh from her body with a blunt knife, bit by bit, for the sake of another woman.
This body’s identity was that of General Shen’s legitimate daughter. Long ago, she had been betrothed by the Emperor to Prince He Xiyan of Xiyun Kingdom. He Xiyan was the Emperor’s most favored son, and she was of suitable status. Everyone in the imperial city considered them a perfect match.
What they didn’t know was that He Xiyan’s true love was not Shen Wan, but Shen Shi, another daughter from the General’s household. Shen Shi was the General’s illegitimate daughter, sickly since childhood and carrying toxins from her mother’s womb.
This body had a special characteristic, which wasn’t surprising for a novel’s female lead. Her blood was a potent antidote that, when combined with other medicines, could cure many illnesses. But few people knew this secret.
One of those who knew was He Xiyan. He didn’t object to this marriage because he planned to bring her into his princely mansion and slowly drain her blood to detoxify Shen Shi. The original owner had no idea that the man she adored harbored such intentions.
Coupled with what would happen tonight, future events would unfold with He Xiyan tormenting her endlessly while she remained devoted to him like a first love. Even though she wavered, felt lost, hesitated, and despaired at times, whenever she saw He Xiyan, she couldn’t let go or forget, tormenting herself. They tormented each other for fifteen to twenty years, until the originally healthy lead became weak and sickly, so frail that a breeze could knock her over. She could only live for about twenty years because He Xiyan later repented, searching everywhere for her, but ended up being poisoned.
To save He Xiyan, the original owner fed him her blood daily, becoming critically ill from blood loss. After He Xiyan recovered, he sought various methods to extend her life. Unexpectedly, Shen Shi discovered this and blackmailed He Xiyan, saying if he wanted to extend the original owner’s life, he had to marry her and divorce the original owner. After many twists and turns, the two leads who had tormented each other finally ended up together.
When they got together, the readers of this book were dissatisfied. They would have preferred the female lead to die, leaving the male lead to suffer for life. Instead, no matter how terribly the male lead behaved, the female lead always forgave him. In the end, they lived happily ever after, having children, which felt like being force-fed garbage to the readers.
“188, give me one of those Super-Strength Pills from the backpack.”
Anticipating a tough fight ahead, she couldn’t afford to be physically weak. Shen Wan swallowed the pill in one gulp, wincing a bit at the cost. Items from the high-level space were good but extremely expensive, making her heart ache to use them.
[188: “Wan Wan, you can do it. I believe in you.”] As a system, he naturally had to encourage his host when she felt down. Their last collaboration had been pleasant and highly rated, earning him praise from the big boss 000. He was told that if they continued like this, he could apply for an upgrade.
Soon, there was movement outside the door.
No one entered, but a voice came through: “Princess Consort, the Prince won’t be coming tonight. He instructs you to retire early.”
The Prince not spending the wedding night in the Princess Consort’s chamber—what did this mean? It was a public slap in her face. If word got out, the new Princess Consort would be a laughingstock.
Shen Wan, not being the original owner, naturally didn’t feel disappointed or upset. She swiftly lifted the veil, saying, “Very well. You may all leave.”
The messenger, He Xiyan’s confidant, was clearly surprised by Shen Wan’s response. He paused for a moment before hastily retreating.
“Princess Consort, what does the Prince mean by this?” asked Hong Zhu, her personal maid.
Hong Zhu was the kind of character set up in novels to always be by the lead’s side—eternally loyal, but prone to causing trouble and a bit slow-witted.
Seeing that Hong Zhu was about to launch into a long criticism of He Xiyan, Shen Wan quickly stopped her. She didn’t want to listen to a maid droning on like an old woman, endlessly nagging.
She stuffed the red veil into Hong Zhu’s mouth, whose eyes widened in surprise.
“The Prince must have drunk too much,” Shen Wan explained seriously, standing before Hong Zhu. “He probably fears that in his drunken state, he’d make a bad impression on me, worried his alcohol breath might offend me. So he sent someone to tell me to rest early. You see, the Prince is being considerate of me.”
Hong Zhu: Is… is that so?
The steward eavesdropping outside was also taken aback. He had expected to hear the mistress and maid complaining about the Prince abandoning his bride on their wedding night, surely feeling indignant. Why were things so different from what he had imagined? The Princess Consort actually thought the Prince’s absence was to avoid offending her with his drunken state. Was her brain in her foot?
Never mind, as long as these two didn’t cause a scene, it was fine, as the Prince had instructed.
Although Hong Zhu didn’t quite believe it, she still helped Shen Wan remove her heavy headdress. After Shen Wan lay down, Hong Zhu went to rest on a small couch nearby.
Shen Wan didn’t sleep. To test the effectiveness of the super-strength pill, she had secretly grabbed a wine cup earlier. Now, under the covers, she squeezed the cup hard. With several cracking sounds, the cup shattered into pieces. Fortunately, she had wrapped the cup in the red veil, preventing the shards from cutting her hand.
The cup’s destruction proved that the expensive super-strength pill was indeed potent.
188 silently observed, wondering what his host was planning.
Outside, the moon had quietly risen, and a cool breeze blew in through the half-closed window. This chill awakened Hong Zhu on her small couch. She shrank her hands, feeling that tonight was colder than the previous night. Worried about Shen Wan catching cold, she got up to close the window completely.
As she touched the window, she vaguely saw a dark shadow and instinctively called out, “Who’s there?”
The window was suddenly pushed open. Hong Zhu tried to scream but was too late. The person who jumped in from the window struck the back of her neck with a chop, knocking her unconscious.
“Finally, you’ve come,” Shen Wan, lying in bed, sighed softly upon hearing the window’s movement. She had been waiting for this moment for a long time. If the intruder hadn’t come soon, she would have fallen asleep. She didn’t want anything to happen then.
The intruder walked softly to the bedside. Even with her head covered by the blanket, Shen Wan could feel the cold gaze in the darkness.
Damn, why did she always encounter such wolves on her missions? Cruel, heartless, with brains eaten by zombies.
“If you must blame someone, blame yourself for insisting on marrying into the Prince’s mansion, and for being the legitimate daughter of the Shen family,” the man at the bedside muttered lowly.
Then Shen Wan heard rustling sounds. “188, can you check if he’s taking off his pants?”
[188: “Yes, he is.”]
“What a pervert!” Shen Wan clenched her fists tightly. Then she felt her blanket being lifted. Earlier, while under the covers, she had quietly put on two extra layers of clothing.
The man was clearly stunned for a moment to see Shen Wan so properly dressed.
Shen Wan opened her eyes and met a dark shadow. In the moonlight, she couldn’t make out the man’s face, but someone doing such a thing would certainly not show his true appearance. His upper body was still clothed; she didn’t look lower, having no interest in perverts.
“I’ve heard that General Shen’s legitimate daughter is a beauty, and indeed it’s true. If the Prince isn’t interested in such a beauty, then I won’t be polite.”
The man’s voice now was completely different from before. If Shen Wan hadn’t been listening the whole time, she might have thought this was a different person.
“This drama queen actually likes to cuckold himself.”
After the man spoke, he sensed Shen Wan looking at him, without panic or screaming. His body stiffened for a moment. This wasn’t going as he had expected. Shouldn’t a woman in this situation scream loudly?
“Your Highness?”
At this moment, Shen Wan suddenly asked, “Your Highness, didn’t you say you wouldn’t come? Why have you come in the middle of the night? Is it because you couldn’t bear to be apart from me, and even though you felt embarrassed about going back on your word, you still climbed through the window to come?”
He Xiyan: No, he wasn’t.
188: Hahaha… he really couldn’t hold back his laughter.
He Xiyan was about to deny it, but then he thought it would be better to agree. After everything happened, he could tell her it wasn’t him, which would be an even bigger blow to her. She would scream then, surely attracting people from the mansion. At that point, she would be ruined.
“Mm.”
So He Xiyan grunted in agreement, not using his real voice but mumbling unclearly.
Then he pressed down, ready for what was to come next.
“Slap!”
He never imagined that before he could touch her, just as he lowered his face a bit, he would be slapped hard.
Before He Xiyan could react, Shen Wan slapped his other cheek, then flipped like a fish, kicking him hard between the legs. She then threw the entire blanket over him, jumped off the bed, and kicked him to the floor.
Finally, she jumped onto the blanket-covered figure, sitting down hard. There was a crisp cracking sound, though it wasn’t clear what part of him had broken. The sound was quite pleasant to Shen Wan’s ears.
“You scoundrel! The Prince doesn’t have bad breath. With your foul breath, how dare you impersonate the Prince? You deserve to die! I’ll teach you a lesson, you rogue!”
Shen Wan pummeled the blanket forcefully, knowing that as the male lead, he wouldn’t die so easily from a beating.
The commotion woke up Hong Zhu, who had been knocked out.
Hong Zhu twisted her sore neck, remembering what had happened earlier, and was about to cry out. Shen Wan stopped her, “Don’t shout. Do you want to call people to watch and ruin your mistress’s reputation?”
Hong Zhu quickly clasped her hand over her throat, forcibly swallowing her scream.
“Princess Consort, where is the scoundrel?”
Hong Zhu wanted to light a lamp but thought better of it, realizing it might alert people outside. She just whispered her question, and Shen Wan replied, “He’s right here. Come help me beat him up. Find some rope.”
“There’s no rope.”
Shen Wan: Oh, indeed a stupid maid.
Shen Wan felt the force under the blanket gradually increasing. She felt for He Xiyan’s head and struck it with her fist. He Xiyan never imagined that one day he would be knocked out by a single punch from a small woman, the pain making him see stars.
“Find scissors.”
Hong Zhu’s body trembled, “Princess Consort, are you going to kill that scoundrel?”
“No, just bring them. The scoundrel is already suffocated unconscious and can’t cause trouble for now. Go get the scissors, we’ll twist cloth strips into rope and tie him up.”
Hong Zhu went to find scissors and returned to ask quietly, “After we tie him up, should we call the steward?”
Shen Wan didn’t answer, quickly using the scissors to cut the scoundrel’s clothes into strips, twisting them into rope, and tying him up tightly. He Xiyan, being somewhat skilled in martial arts, soon regained consciousness. Feeling the chill on his body, he sensed something was wrong.
Looking down, he found himself naked except for a piece of cloth around his waist.
Seeing him awake, Shen Wan chopped the back of his neck again, knocking him out once more. As he lost consciousness, he cursed inwardly, “Damn! I underestimated her.”
Even if General Shen’s daughter was delicate, she should have some martial arts skills.
“Princess Consort, what should we do now?” Hong Zhu asked fearfully. She never imagined the Prince’s mansion would be so dangerous. Fortunately, the Princess Consort was capable and nothing bad had happened.
Shen Wan picked up He Xiyan with one hand, “You wait here. I’ll throw him out.”
He Xiyan didn’t take her seriously at all, and he was planning something unusual tonight. Thus, only the two of them were in her courtyard. As long as they didn’t make too much noise, they wouldn’t attract attention.
Hong Zhu hurriedly opened the door for Shen Wan, watching in awe as her mistress effortlessly carried a large man. She swallowed hard, realizing how formidable her Princess Consort was. Why had she never shown such skills before? She must have been hiding her abilities.
Shen Wan found a tree and hung He Xiyan upside down from a branch. To ensure he stayed in the tree for a while, she returned with more rope and tied him up like a cicada pupa. Satisfied, she happily returned to her room, telling Hong Zhu to close the doors and windows tightly before lying down to sleep.
Hong Zhu: She couldn’t sleep at all.
The next day, Shen Wan woke up feeling refreshed, having slept very well.
Soon, the steward came to her side.
“Princess Consort, the Prince is ill. Would you like to go see him? Princess Qingning has also arrived.” The implication was clear: shouldn’t you, as the Princess Consort, go see the Prince? Princess Qingning is not one to be reasoned with.
Shen Wan held back for a moment, then put on a worried expression, “Did the Prince fall ill from drinking too much and catching a chill last night?”
“Probably.”
The steward didn’t know about He Xiyan’s plan. He just found it strange that the usually robust Prince was not only sick but refusing to see anyone. He had declined even when they wanted to call a doctor. So the steward had no choice but to ask the new Princess Consort, hoping she might persuade the Prince to see a doctor.
Unexpectedly, Princess Qingning had also heard about this and brought a royal physician from the palace.
Shen Wan arrived at He Xiyan’s quarters, cultivating a sad, worried expression all the way. As soon as she entered the room, she said, “How did the Prince fall ill? And he won’t even let a doctor examine him. I’m so worried.”
She was about to say more when she felt a gaze upon her. Looking up, she saw a woman in luxurious clothing. Meeting her eyes, Shen Wan abruptly swallowed her words.
“Princess Qingning,” Shen Wan called out dryly.
He Qingning raised her chin, glancing contemptuously at Shen Wan, “How have you been taking care of my Third Brother?”
“I only married into the family last night.”
“You’re my Third Brother’s consort. He’s so seriously ill, yet you slept until this hour?”
Shen Wan: “Alright, my mistake.”
He Qingning frowned slightly, suddenly asking, “Shouldn’t you be sharing a room with my Third Brother?”
Shen Wan: “188, how should I answer this?”
