Chapter 25. Marriage? The Car Accident Kind (10)
The Lin family’s faces changed when they saw Grandfather Shen and Shen Wan appear together.
When Grandfather Shen congratulated them with a smile, his tone and expression made it clear to everyone that he was mocking them, nearly driving them to fury. This Old Shen was undoubtedly laughing at how they had been outmaneuvered by their own son.
Lin Ming’s parents were puzzled, as they hadn’t invited Grandfather Shen and Shen Wan. How did these two have the audacity to show up? They cast suspicious glances at Lin Ming and Xia Xinzhi, assuming one of them must have extended the invitation.
“I invited Shen Wan,” Xia Xinzhi said softly, much to their displeasure.
Lin Ming’s mother thought to herself that this daughter-in-law truly came from humble origins. Inviting her son’s ex-wife—was she trying to show off? How tasteless. If not for the grandchild in her belly, she wouldn’t be so tolerant.
“Congratulations to you both,” Shen Wan said, pulling Wen Yingling along as she approached Lin Ming with a beaming smile. Her expression mirrored Grandfather Shen’s perfectly.
Lin Ming finally realized that Shen Wan wasn’t as simple as she seemed—a deeply hidden little fox. It infuriated him. If not for Xinzhi’s insistence on inviting her, he never would have allowed it.
“Shen Wan, I truly want to thank you for allowing Lin Ming and me to be together,” Xia Xinzhi said, unaware that Lin Ming had given Shen Wan 90% of his personal assets.
Seeing Xinzhi’s expression, Shen Wan understood immediately. She leaned in and whispered, “It’s nothing, really. After all, you two share true love. Miss Xia, Lin Ming truly loves you. For your sake, he didn’t hesitate to give me 90% of his personal assets in the divorce.” Seeing Xinzhi’s face change dramatically, even her thick makeup unable to conceal it, Shen Wan continued, “So, you must be very happy together. It would be a shame to waste Lin Ming’s wholehearted devotion to you.”
“What a sincere and touching love, truly treating money as dirt. It makes one green with envy,” Shen Wan added.
Shen Wan thought to herself: Can I have a dozen ex-husbands like this? She guaranteed she could divide up the money piece by piece. Compared to love, she’d much rather be buried in the dirt of money.
The corner of Wen Yingling’s lips curved almost imperceptibly as she chimed in, “May you two grow old together, hand in hand for life.”
Shen Wan was amused when she heard this. Growing old together, hand in hand for life—but not wishing them happiness and perfection. Ice Queen, you’re being a bit playful!
But she liked it.
Xia Xinzhi was so angry she could barely maintain her composure, her eyes wide. Lin Ming had paid such a high price to divorce Shen Wan? Giving her 90% of his personal assets—how much was that? She felt like strangling Shen Wan right then and there.
Next came the wedding ceremony. Shen Wan pulled Wen Yingling to sit next to Grandfather Shen. The two generations smiled and whispered to each other, clearly delighted about something. The others at the table exchanged glances. This grandfather and granddaughter were truly family. If they didn’t know Shen Wan had just divorced Lin Ming, they would have thought they were simply guests attending the wedding.
It was truly impressive.
“Where did you go just now?” Grandfather Shen, uninterested in watching the wedding ceremony, asked with a smile.
Shen Wan whispered, “I went to congratulate my ex-husband. He was quite generous, giving me so much money in the divorce. I had to wish him and his true love eternal happiness. Grandpa, don’t you think I did the right thing?”
“Wan Wan is truly my clever granddaughter, thinking so thoroughly. You did well.”
Shen Wan looked up, observing the newlyweds with their tense faces and blatantly fake smiles. She continued, “Grandpa, they must be very happy to receive my blessings. Look how joyful their smiles are.”
The guests at the table couldn’t help but look up at Lin Ming and his new bride, Xia Xinzhi. They nearly flipped the table in shock.
Was that a joyful smile?
It was clearly a forced smile, uglier than crying.
“Yes, they’re smiling so happily. Wan Wan is truly a sensible girl who knows how to be supportive. We must fully support true love like this and not hinder them.”
Shen Wan nodded quickly, “Exactly. For true love, Lin Ming wasn’t bound by social norms. He was willing to bear the reputation of a cheater to be with the girl he loves. And Miss Xia, for true love, disregarded being labeled a homewrecker and didn’t care about her reputation. How could I possibly stand in their way? I’d be the world’s greatest villain if I did.”
The grandfather and granddaughter exchanged words back and forth. Though they spoke softly, the guests at their table heard every word clearly.
They found listening to these two much more interesting than watching the grand wedding ceremony. Whenever Shen Wan said something, the guests at the table had expressions of sudden realization. Oh, so that’s how it was! Wow, these two are so shameless! Heavens, can it really be like this? Damn, so the child is already four months along.
By the time the wedding ended, they had their fill of gossip and lost interest in the banquet. They were especially eager to hear if this grandfather and granddaughter pair had any more juicy details to share. Unfortunately, the two stopped talking and just focused on eating. Did the Shen family not have food at home? That Old Shen really raised his granddaughter to be just as shameless. Unbelievable. They almost missed Shen Wan’s father, Grandfather Shen’s son, that oddball who died in an accident. That young man was honest and proper, unlike these Shen family members.
Xia Xinzhi maintained a tense expression throughout, trying hard not to think about how Shen Wan had taken so much of Lin Ming’s assets. But her heart still bled—all of that should have belonged to her. Today, she would definitely make Shen Wan spit out everything she had swallowed.
Xia Xinzhi changed out of her wedding dress, and it was time to toast the guests. She gave Zhang Xiaoron a meaningful look. Zhang Xiaoron, well-prepared, quickly signaled her two cousins and stayed close to Xia Xinzhi as they went to toast the guests.
Shen Wan had stopped eating, her round eyes fixed on Xia Xinzhi. She watched as Xia Xinzhi, holding a wine glass and with a hint of excitement in her eyes, slowly approached her table. Shen Wan rested her chin on her hand. Is it coming?
Wen Yingling instantly sensed a different aura emanating from Shen Wan.
What was this second personality planning now?
She looked up, following Shen Wan’s gaze to see Xia Xinzhi approaching. She couldn’t help but pay closer attention.
“Miss Shen.”
Xia Xinzhi wore a smile, this time seemingly more genuine, though with a touch of sinister intent. “Thank you, Miss Shen, for your graciousness. I’d like to offer you a toast.”
Shen Wan raised her glass, clinked it with Xia Xinzhi’s, and drank it all in one go.
Xia Xinzhi took a small sip and slowly passed by Shen Wan’s seat. Wen Yingling thought that would be the end of it, with no further incident.
She never expected Xia Xinzhi to suddenly collapse, dragging Shen Wan down with her. From that angle, it looked as if Shen Wan had pushed Xia Xinzhi. Wen Yingling wanted to do something, but it was too late. Both women fell to the ground, with Shen Wan on top of Xia Xinzhi.
“Ah—— My stomach… My baby!!” Xia Xinzhi cried out in agony as she lay on the ground, her scream drawing everyone’s attention. “Miss Shen, why did you…” Why did you have to fall so heavily on top of her? It was crushing her. This wasn’t going as planned, but Shen Wan falling too actually made it more convincing.
Shen Wan, curious, asked, “188, why is she wailing like that? And what baby? Isn’t her belly just full of intestines and feces? Even if she had diarrhea, there wouldn’t be a baby.”
[188: “Perhaps she’s suffering from some kind of delusion, always thinking she’s pregnant. Poor thing, so desperate to be a mother.”]
“Yes, it’s pitiful. Having the omniscient perspective from reading novels is so useful. Watch me reach back and see what I can pull out.”
188: Host, you’re being so crude. Mind your image in front of the Ice Queen.
“Shen Wan, why did you push Xinzhi?” Zhang Xiaoron exclaimed, covering her mouth in feigned shock. “Lin Ming divorced you because he didn’t have feelings for you. It has nothing to do with Xinzhi. Why are you hurting her? Why did you push her?”
If anyone was still unclear about what had happened, Zhang Xiaoron’s outburst made everything crystal clear.
They gathered around to see Shen Wan on top of Xia Xinzhi. Wen Yingling was about to help Shen Wan up when an aged hand patted her shoulder and whispered, “Don’t interfere. Let the girl play. If you step in, it won’t be as fun.”
It was Grandfather Shen.
Wen Yingling was confused, but Grandfather Shen’s words made her relax a bit. She sat back down and asked softly, “Grandfather Shen, what’s going on?”
“Just watch.”
Grandfather Shen was very pleased with the current Shen Wan. He had clearly seen that Xia Xinzhi fell on her own, and Shen Wan could have avoided it, but instead chose to fall heavily on top of her. He didn’t believe Shen Wan was foolish enough to cause trouble for herself. In an instant, he guessed a possibility—Xia Xinzhi was faking her pregnancy.
Wen Yingling’s cool gaze remained fixed on Shen Wan. Grandfather Shen noticed and said with a smile, “I didn’t realize you and that girl were so close. Apart from Yingting, I’ve never seen you so concerned about anyone.”
“Grandfather Shen is joking. I’ve only ever been concerned about Wan Wan.”
Grandfather Shen shook his head and chuckled, “Still not willing to forgive that boy?”
“It’s impossible to forgive. His mistake is irreversible.”
The Lin family members had also arrived, stunned to see Shen Wan on top of Xia Xinzhi.
Xia Xinzhi, feeling it was about time, cried out, “My baby! Miss Shen, please get off me. Don’t press on my belly. My child isn’t born yet. Even if you’re resentful, don’t harm an innocent baby who hasn’t even seen this wonderful world.”
Lin Ming rushed over just in time to hear Xia Xinzhi’s words. His eyes bulged with rage as he raised his foot to kick Shen Wan. In that instant, Shen Wan rolled over, pulling Xia Xinzhi with her. Lin Ming’s kick landed squarely on Xia Xinzhi’s lower back, causing her to let out a genuine scream of pain.
“Ahhh——”
“Shen Wan!!” In that moment, Lin Ming truly wanted to kill her.
Wen Yingling couldn’t bear to watch anymore. As Lin Ming was about to kick Shen Wan again, she rushed over, though she was some distance away. Fortunately, Shen Wan quickly dodged.
“There’s blood! Xinzhi is bleeding!” Zhang Xiaoron, seeing things weren’t going according to plan and the script had changed, latched onto the fact that Xia Xinzhi was actually bleeding now. The situation seemed even worse, surely enough to make Shen Wan pay the price.
“Miss Shen, what have I ever done to wrong you? Why are you hurting me and my child like this?”
Xia Xinzhi whimpered in pain, her brows deeply furrowed. She wanted to get up, but Lin Ming’s kick to her lower back had been so forceful that she couldn’t move.
Shen Wan looked at Xia Xinzhi and said in a moderate voice, “Miss Xia, I haven’t harmed you, and your child is fine because you don’t have a child. How could anything happen to it?” Shen Wan’s face took on a pitying expression. “I really didn’t know your delusion was so severe that you imagined yourself pregnant.”
“Shen Wan, what nonsense are you spouting? Look at the blood on the ground! Let go of Xinzhi already. This is all your doing. Shen Wan, you’ve committed murder, do you understand?” Zhang Xiaoron continued playing her role, acting with consummate skill.
Shen Wan, lying on the ground, shook her head. “Are you Miss Xia’s good friend? No wonder you can’t bear to expose her. Her condition is quite serious. Ah! There’s blood? Lin Ming’s kick just now was pretty hard. He really didn’t hold back. Those pointy leather shoes, kicking the lower back—it’s sure to leave a big bruise. So it even drew blood.”
“You’ve harmed my child,” Xia Xinzhi insisted, deciding to simply “faint.”
Zhang Xiaoron quickly moved to support Xia Xinzhi. Her two cousins also came over, preparing to lift Xia Xinzhi and take her to the hospital.
“Hurry, take her to the hospital. I’ll treat Xinzhi immediately,” Zhang Xiaoron said, seemingly genuinely worried about Xia Xinzhi, her forehead beaded with sweat from anxiety. Lin Ming was somewhat dazed by all this.
Coming to his senses, he glared coldly at Shen Wan. “Shen Wan, don’t think you can get away with this!”
“Lin Ming, look at that. What is it?” Shen Wan stood up, brushing off her clothes, and pointed at something on the ground—the punctured blood bag. “Pick it up and see. Is that your child that fell to the ground?”
At that moment, everyone looked where Shen Wan was pointing. The remaining half of the blood in the bag was still seeping out, staining a patch of the floor red. The guests’ heads were filled with question marks. Why was there a blood bag here?
“I saw that thing fall out of Sister Xinzhi’s dress just now,” an honest little flower girl spoke up, seeing how confused the adults were.
“I saw it too. It really fell from Sister Xinzhi’s dress.”
“Oh, Sister Xinzhi’s dress is torn. What’s that thing peeking out?”
Everyone quickly looked at Xia Xinzhi, who was now lying on a stretcher. Currently “unconscious,” she was unaware that her dress had a large tear at the abdomen, revealing a mass of cotton stuffing spilling out.
The reason Xia Xinzhi hadn’t been carried away yet was that Shen Wan’s ten bodyguards, following instructions, had blocked their path.
Shen Wan had already approached Xia Xinzhi and pulled out all the cotton from her stomach. Holding a large handful of cotton, she stood before the crowd as they stared at Xia Xinzhi’s now-flat belly with unfamiliar expressions.
“Lin Ming, you should take Xinzhi to see a doctor soon. Her delusion is really quite severe. Look, she thought she was pregnant, stuffing herself with cotton and blood bags. Did she think she was starring in a palace intrigue drama?”
Wen Yingling: Unexpected.
Grandfather Shen was grinning from ear to ear. That Lin Ming boy really had excellent taste, worthy of the Lin family.
The Lin family members were stunned. Lin Ming was dumbfounded.
Zhang Xiaoron panicked, having no idea things would turn out like this. Their seemingly flawless plan—how did it end up like this?
Xia Xinzhi was truly half-unconscious now. Lin Ming’s kick had nearly knocked her internal organs out.
She vaguely heard buzzing sounds around her and felt someone doing something to her stomach. Assuming Zhang Xiaoron had taken her to the hospital, she relaxed and kept her eyes closed.
Suddenly, she sensed something was wrong and quickly opened her eyes. She found herself still at the wedding venue, looking up at Lin Ming’s dark, gloomy face. She couldn’t understand what was happening.
She looked around and finally saw a large wad of cotton and a blood bag in Shen Wan’s hands. Her face turned even paler, and she fainted for real this time.
“Lin Ming, here you go. Hold your child and its blood carefully. Don’t lose them,” Shen Wan said, stuffing the cotton and blood bag into Lin Ming’s hands before quickly running back to Wen Yingling’s side, looking utterly pleased with herself.
How does it feel, you scumbag?
“I wonder how Lin Ming feels holding his son for the first time,” Shen Wan said to 188. “It must be quite complicated, given that it’s his first time being a father.”
[188: “Mm, judging by his shocked and disbelieving expression, he must be so happy he can’t tell north from south. Most people have to wait ten months to hold their child, but he got to do it in just four months.”]
“Haha, Lin Ming must be doubly blessed—a happy marriage and a newborn son.”
188: He didn’t know what was going on. His host was supposed to play the role of a truly innocent white lotus, so how did she end up performing as a black-hearted schemer? Look at that schadenfreude—she’s playing the villain.
To be honest, even Grandfather Shen was stunned by Shen Wan’s move of handing the “son” to Lin Ming. His granddaughter had truly surpassed him. She showed great promise as the future heir of the Shen corporation.
Wen Yingling didn’t have much of a reaction. Seeing that Shen Wan was unharmed, she felt slightly relieved. Noticing Shen Wan’s disheveled appearance and the blood on her hands, she took out some tissues and led Shen Wan to the restroom. Shen Wan just gave her a silly smile and allowed herself to be led away. Ah, the Ice Queen seemed even colder now, but her small hand was so soft. Shen Wan wanted to hold it forever.
“It’s my first time being led by the hand. I’m a bit nervous, 188.”
“That familiar scent of love is back. Can you smell it?”
188: At times like this, playing dead is the best option.
“You wouldn’t understand even if I told you. After all, you’re a single system. You can’t comprehend these things.”
188: He knew it would be like this. When the host gets smug, she likes to tease him mercilessly. What can he do but forgive her?
“You knew Xia Xinzhi was faking her pregnancy?” Wen Yingling asked coldly as she wiped Shen Wan’s hands in the restroom.
Shen Wan: “I knew.”
“You also knew she planned to frame you today?”
“I knew.”
Wen Yingling glanced at Shen Wan. “So that’s why you were so excited when you received the invitation?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Shen Wan paused for a moment. “If I had told you, would you have helped me?”
Wen Yingling had finished cleaning Shen Wan’s hands. She gave Shen Wan a long, deep look before turning to leave the restroom, coldly leaving Shen Wan behind.
Shen Wan looked a bit dumbfounded. “Did I make her angry?”
[188: “Chase after her.”]
“Oh, right.”
Shen Wan ran quickly, soon catching up to Wen Yingling. “Yingling, are you angry?”
“Yingling, I thought it would be more interesting in front of so many people.”
“Yingling, don’t be silent. Your cold, indifferent look scares me.”
Wen Yingling stopped and turned around. “Didn’t you say this world was unfamiliar and frightening to you, and that you only trusted me?”
With so many people around earlier, Shen Wan showed no fear. She even reacted quickly enough to roll over with Xia Xinzhi when Lin Ming nearly kicked her. That reaction speed was beyond Wen Yingling’s capabilities.
Hm???
“Shen Wan, congratulations on successfully adapting to this unfamiliar world. You now have the ability to survive independently.”
Such a cold tone.
Shen Wan was truly stunned. She had just caught a whiff of love in the air, and now… this was a sign of breaking up, wasn’t it?
188: You two haven’t even started yet. How can you break up?
“Yingling, I’m dizzy. My head is spinning so much…” Shen Wan quickly hugged Wen Yingling’s arm, hanging off her like a large ornament. “I was in a daze earlier and don’t know what I did. It must have been my subconscious survival instinct. Now my brain feels like it’s about to explode, my whole body aches, and my head is so dizzy. I must have hit my head when I rolled earlier. Yingling, can I lean on your shoulder for a bit? Just for a moment. I’m really so dizzy, I feel like the world is spinning. I have no strength in my body and can’t walk normally at all.”
188: Impressive, his host.
Dizzy?
No strength?
Wen Yingling glanced at the small hand gripping her arm with bull-like strength, feeling the other’s powerful grip. She was tempted to throw Shen Wan away. But seeing Shen Wan’s small face leaning on her shoulder, she ended up just wrapping an arm around Shen Wan’s waist. “Then I’ll take you back to rest.”
“Mm…”
Wen Yingling, supporting Shen Wan, bid farewell to Grandfather Shen, saying she needed to take Shen Wan home to rest. Grandfather Shen had no objections.
Living with Yingling must be making his little granddaughter smarter and smarter. He should have encouraged the two children to develop feelings for each other from a young age.
In the car, Wen Yingling glanced at Shen Wan, who was still leaning on her shoulder. “Still dizzy?” she asked.
“Dizzy.”
Wen Yingling’s arm around Shen Wan’s waist tightened involuntarily. She asked in a very low voice, “Is this world still unfamiliar to you?”
“Extremely unfamiliar.”
“Then next time you’re about to do something dangerous, remember to tell me. In an unfamiliar world, doing dangerous things can put you in deep trouble.”
“My brain hasn’t been working well lately, maybe because of the bump. I didn’t think it through.”
Wen Yingling pursed her lips slightly, her voice icy cold but her words surprisingly warm to Shen Wan’s ears. “Then you need to develop a habit.”
Shen Wan thought to herself: Alright, alright. From now on, she would be someone incapable of independence, unable to take care of herself.
