Chapter 1. A Romance? The Kidney-Stealing Kind (1)
“Brother, I don’t want her kidney,” Huo Ting sobbed into Huo Han’s chest, tears streaming down her face. “I’d rather die than see you forced to be with someone you don’t love for my sake. Your unhappiness would kill me anyway.”
“There, there, Ting Ting,” Huo Han gently patted her back, his voice soft and tender. “If you died, I would be devastated.”
Huo Ting’s pale face contorted in anguish. “Isn’t there anyone else? Must you sacrifice your whole life to be with her just to save me?”
“Ting Ting, her kidney is the best match for you,” Huo Han’s eyes darkened. “Your blood type is rare. She’s your biological sister, so the transplant has the highest chance of success. My only wish is for you to live.”
Huo Ting gazed at Huo Han with bloodshot eyes. “So you still plan to marry her?” Without waiting for his response, she clung to his waist, her voice filled with longing. “I don’t want you to marry anyone else.”
…
Shen Wan observed this entire scene from her hiding spot in the corner. Her gaze flickered coldly between the two as she muttered, “188, I don’t think Huo Han and I can ever have a sweet relationship. It’s impossible to be lovey-dovey with someone who’s scheming to steal my kidney.”
[System 188: “Wan Wan, think about your mortgage payments, your debts, what else can you do besides this job? The competition is fierce, and if you fail, you might face unemployment. And think about me too—if you lose your job, I’ll be reset. As the saying goes, to get by in life, you’ve got to put up with some unpleasantness.”]
Shen Wan’s expression twisted in conflict. “But he wants to cut out my kidney!”
[188: “Well, you have two of them. Losing one isn’t the end of the world—you can still live.”]
Shen Wan: “…” 188 must be a spy sent by the other side.
“188, wasn’t the mission to turn an abusive story into a sweet one?” Shen Wan asked. “If he really takes my kidney, wouldn’t that just make it a tragic love story? It can’t become a sweet romance. As the female lead, I’d be hurt both physically and emotionally. How could I possibly have a loving relationship with him after that? Even if I liked him, I’d still be in agony. Readers aren’t blind—I’ve analyzed the original text, and they felt the female lead suffered too much. That’s why they reacted negatively. So my kidney absolutely cannot be taken.”
Shen Wan said this while protectively covering her sides. Completing the mission didn’t have to involve such a huge sacrifice.
188 hesitated, conceding that Shen Wan had a point. The main goal of the assigned task was to satisfy the readers who had been devastated by the tragic original story. If the female lead continued to suffer, it could never become a sweet romance.
[188: “Wan Wan, do you have some idea in mind?”]
Shen Wan’s face lit up. “Aren’t we supposed to go for a medical exam soon? Can you block off one of my kidneys?” If it was blocked, she’d only have one, and then no one could target her, right?
188 considered it and decided it was feasible. In a sweet romance, the female lead shouldn’t suffer. Blocking the kidney was a good solution.
“Doctor, how did it go?” Huo Han clenched his fists tightly, his expression tense. “Are Wan Wan and Ting Ting a match?”
“The tissue typing was successful,” the doctor pushed up his glasses, his tone hesitant. “However…”
“Does Shen Wan have kidney problems too?” Huo Ting’s voice was dejected. Seeing her disappointment, Huo Han’s heart ached. He longed to hold her close and comfort her.
The doctor shook his head and explained, “Miss Shen is in perfect health, and her kidneys are fine. It’s just that…”
“Just what?” Huo Han felt a wave of relief. The match was successful, and both her body and kidneys were healthy—what else could be wrong?
The doctor said regretfully, “Mr. Huo, Miss Shen cannot donate a kidney to Miss Huo because she was born with only one kidney.”
Shen Wan: Haha! Only one, you hear that? The kind where removing it would be fatal.
System 188: “…”
Both Huo Ting and Huo Han were dumbfounded.
Born with only one kidney??
Seeing their disbelief, Shen Wan quickly adopted a very regretful expression. She clung to Huo Han’s arm and said softly, “Huo Han, I’m so sorry. I had no idea this would happen. I truly wanted to help Ting Ting—who could have guessed I only have one kidney?”
“It’s… it’s not your fault, Wan Wan,” Huo Han snapped out of his shock and comforted her, seeing her look of self-reproach.
Inwardly, he was still reeling. How could Shen Wan have only one kidney? What would happen to Ting Ting? She couldn’t wait much longer—the surgery had to be done within six months. They had already wasted so much time pursuing Shen Wan as a donor. Ting Ting’s blood type was so rare, finding another match would be nearly impossible.
As they left the hospital, Huo Han stared intently at the back of Shen Wan’s head. She felt a chill run down her spine, startling her so badly that she stumbled. Huo Han froze, wanting to catch her, but he was holding Ting Ting’s hand and couldn’t move quickly enough. He could only watch helplessly as Shen Wan began to fall.
Shen Wan: “188, help me——”
[188: “Wan Wan, stay calm! A little fall won’t kill you. Who knows, seeing you hurt and pitiful might awaken Huo Han’s sympathy and tenderness. He might slowly fall for you—that’s how it always happens on TV.”]
Shen Wan: Boss, can I request a different system? What the hell kind of TV shows are those?
Both Shen Wan and 188 expected her to tumble ungracefully down the stairs. 188 was even preparing to block her pain receptors. But just as she was about to fall, her body suddenly stopped. A sweet scent filled her nostrils, and she instinctively embraced the person who caught her.
A soft, slender waist—definitely a woman. Shen Wan looked up and met a pair of beautiful almond-shaped eyes. The stunningly gorgeous face left her dazed.
What a beautiful woman.
“Miss, are you alright?” Yin Meichang’s full red lips parted as she spoke. Her long, elegant hand rested on Shen Wan’s waist, while Shen Wan’s arms were wrapped around her, having fallen right into her embrace. Noticing Shen Wan’s awestruck gaze, Yin Meichang’s lips curved into a smile as she said softly, “Can you stand up now?”
“I’m… I’m fine,” Shen Wan hurriedly straightened up. “Thank you so much. If it weren’t for you, I would have fallen for sure.”
Yin Meichang chuckled lightly. “It’s nothing.” She nodded at Shen Wan and began to walk past her, but Shen Wan quickly called out, “Miss, what’s your name? You’re my savior—I should remember it.”
[188: “Wan Wan, stop right there! Your mission is to have a sweet romance with the male lead, not flirt with women. If you dare express interest in anyone but the male lead, the mission will fail and you’ll be immediately extracted from this world. Then your wages will be docked. After three failures, you’ll face unemployment. Wan Wan, jobless vagrants are very pitiful.”]
Shen Wan’s expression froze. Oh right.
She was supposed to be the tragic heroine who falls for the male lead. Confessing to anyone else would cause mission failure and extraction from this world. This rule was meant to keep agents focused and prevent them from getting distracted by all the devoted male supporting characters and perfect female side characters they might encounter. If they gave in to temptation and started a romance, it would seriously impact the mission.
“Yin Meichang.”
Yin Meichang gave her name and left with a smile. Shen Wan watched the swaying figure in the cheongsam walk away, then quickly shook her head. She was the tragic heroine who needed to fall for the male lead. She couldn’t pursue romance in this little world. Even though there was something incredibly alluring about that woman, a magnetism that drew her in from their first meeting. The feeling was strange, as if they’d met before.
“Wan Wan, are you alright?” Huo Han asked apologetically. “Ting Ting wasn’t feeling well just now, so I couldn’t help you. You’re not upset, are you?”
“Of course not,” Shen Wan replied absently, her mind elsewhere. “Ting Ting is fragile. It’s only right that you look after her.” Her thoughts were still filled with the woman named Yin Meichang. She couldn’t forget that single glance.
“Huo Han, since I only have one kidney and can’t help Ting Ting, what will happen to her now?” Shen Wan asked with feigned concern.
Huo Han’s expression darkened. “I’ll find another way. I’ll use all of the Huo family’s resources to find a suitable kidney for Ting Ting. Don’t worry about it. Ting Ting’s condition is worsening, so I might not be able to spend much time with you in the near future.”
“That’s fine, I understand. You should be with Ting Ting,” Shen Wan said with a look of compassion that did nothing to improve Huo Han’s mood. “I’ll head back on my own. No need to see me off.”
Huo Han hadn’t planned to anyway. His gaze followed Shen Wan’s retreating figure with a sinister gleam. If the Huo family exhausted all their resources and still couldn’t find a suitable kidney, then… He glanced at Ting Ting, who looked as if she might be blown away by a gust of wind, then back at Shen Wan as she bounded energetically onto a bus.
Ting Ting must live, no matter what it takes.
Shen Wan leaned back in her seat with a sigh. “188, this isn’t good. The way Huo Han looked at me was terrifying. I don’t think he’s given up on taking my kidney.”
[188: “Wan Wan, if Huo Han were that easy to deal with, would we even need agents? In the original story, today is when the female lead discovers his true intentions and learns that Huo Ting is her sister. Faced with the deception, she refuses to donate her kidney. Huo Han forcibly takes her to the Huo family’s private hospital and has her kidney transplanted to Huo Ting.”]
Shen Wan: “Oh.”
“So even though I only have one kidney, he still plans to take it, right?”
[188: “Yep.”]
Shen Wan frustratedly ruffled her hair. “Well then, might as well declare the mission a failure. We can’t turn this into a sweet romance. No sane woman would end up with someone who tried to steal her kidney.”
[188: “Mortgage payments, debts, unemployment, cosmic joblessness…”]
Shen Wan covered her face: “Fine, I’ll try my best to make it work.”
Shen Wan and Huo Ting were indeed blood-related sisters, sharing the same father but different mothers. Years ago, Shen Wan’s father had an affair and divorced. Huo Ting was the daughter of that other woman. Shortly after Shen Wan’s father married this woman, they both died in a car accident. The infant Huo Ting was sent to an orphanage and later adopted by Mr. Huo.
The original Shen Wan, upon learning the truth and facing Huo Han’s deception, refused to donate her kidney to Huo Ting no matter what. Shen Wan felt this decision was completely justified. One’s kidneys are one’s own, and even faced with a true relative, the choice to donate or not is entirely personal.
A couple of days later, Huo Han came to see Shen Wan again, this time bearing a bouquet of bright red roses.
“Wan Wan, I’m truly sorry about the other day. Ting Ting is fine now. To make up for leaving halfway through our date, why don’t I take you on a trip?” Huo Han’s expression was deeply affectionate.
Shen Wan felt chills run down her spine. Was he planning to drug her mid-journey and drag her to a private hospital to steal her kidney?
“I… I’m busy recently. I can’t go,” Shen Wan refused.
Huo Han’s smile faded. “Is that so? Well, when will you be free? Surely you’re not busy every day?”
“I’m occupied all week.”
“Then let’s go on a trip next week,” Huo Han took Shen Wan’s hand, smiling charmingly. “How about it?” A week would be perfect to help Ting Ting recover. The thought of her impending death made him feel somewhat uneasy. Ting Ting had to live; he couldn’t control that.
Shen Wan: No, she didn’t like traveling.
