Chapter 33: Newfound Freedom
"Sora, you can do it!"
Nejire cheered Sora on from the side, her eyes full of confidence in him. Hands clenched and biting her bottom lip, Nejire encouraged Sora.
"I will win." Sora nodded.
Narrowing his eyes, Sora clenched the ball in his hand and gently rolled it on the skee-ball machine in front of him. The ball rolled out of his hands rapidly despite how 'weak' Sora had rolled the ball.
Rolling along the wooden surface, the ball made it to the ramp and flew up, heading straight to the 100 points in the corner. Sora's eyes lit up, but he quickly sighed in disappointment when the ball only hit the rim of the 100 points and bounced back down to the lowest amount of points one could get, 10.
"Haha!"
A proud laughter erupted from his side, Mirio puffed his chest.
"You have lost once more!"
Mirio proudly announced his victory over Sora, gloating that he had won. The fact that he had lost in the Hero v.s. Villain battle trial slowly disappeared from his head.
Sora rolled his eyes.
"You were amazing Sora. The ball rolled so fast!"
Nejire came to Sora's side, smiling sweetly at him.
Sora chuckled.
Winning games is nearly impossible with his talent. Not even luck could help him win unless he was married to Lady Luck herself.
Would modifying his genetic structure work? Possibly, but Sora wasn't willing to do such a thing just yet. He had full confidence in himself, proud of his Pure Body.
'I will find a way,' Sora thought, a proud confidence deeply rooted in his soul.
Drugs, steroids, augmentations, body modifications… that could all go to hell.
'My body will tear it all down.'
Sora smirked and turned to look at Mirio.
"I'm sure your winning streak won't last forever, Mirio," Sora spoke, his eyes looking into Mirio's calmly.
Mirio stopped laughing, his smile still on his face. "I will wait, even if I turn into an old man."
In other words, no matter how long Sora trains or gets better at the game, he will always lose to Mirio. Even in old age, Mirio is saying that Sora will not be able to beat him. Sora narrowed his eyes, hearing a hint of mockery in Mirio's voice. The usual cheerful and kind young man was changing.
'What an arrogant…' Sora shook his head.
Bzz!
At that moment, Sora's phone began to buzz as he received a phone call. He pulled out his phone and looked at the caller ID.
MOMMY
It was the name his mother put for herself on his phone.
"What's wrong Sora?"
Nejire noticed Sora looking at his phone and asked curiously.
Smiling, Sora looked at Nejire.
"I'm getting a call from my mom. I'll be back, I'm going to go take the call."
Sora walked away after a couple of words with Nejire, Mirio and Tamaki. He stepped out of the arcade and answered the phone call.
"Hey mom, what's wrong?"
"Sora."
Just one word came from his mother's mouth and he could hear the unprecedented seriousness in her tone. Furrowing his eyebrows in worry and seriousness, Sora paid close attention to what his mother was going to say.
He heard her take a short breath before speaking.
"Toga… she's a wanted criminal now. She's all over the news. Toga is currently on the run and is being chased by the police and heroes under suspicion of hurting and possibly having killed someone."
The hell…
Sora frowned. There was no way Toga would have done any of that. Her control over her quirk had been rising so well recently.
Now he needs to do something about it.
He knows what will happen once he gets involved, but to let Toga suffer? Sora won't sit back. He will openly save her and demonstrate she has someone who will defend her for who she is. Sora is fully aware of how innocent Toga is, he has faith in that.
"Mom… listen to me…"
…
Hanging up the phone after speaking with his mother, Sora held a serious expression on his face. Turning his phone off, Sora pocketed his phone.
"Sora?"
Speaking from behind him, Nejire appeared as she was feeling a little curious about Sora. He had been gone for quite a while and was wondering if he was still on his phone. Luckily, she found him hanging up and could talk with him.
Turning around, Sora smiled at Nejire.
"Nejire, there's some business I need to deal with," Sora said.
Stopping in place, Nejire looked up at Sora. She felt stunned, Sora's eyes… they looked at her gently and with an indescribable emotion.
'What is it?'
"Sora-"
Nejire was going to raise some questions, but Sora turned and ran away without giving her a chance. She watched in a stunned manner as Sora dashed away rapidly, his speed amazing as he disappeared in a second.
"Wh-what's going on?"
Stunned, Nejire could only remain standing in place as she looked around. She didn't know what was happening and she felt worried.
"Nejire, where did Sora go?"
Stepping out of the arcade with two ice cream cones in hand, Tamaki looked for Sora curiously. He looked left and right, but he was nowhere to be in sight. Tamaki turned his gaze over to Nejire who still seemed lost.
"Nejire?"
"He left." She answered simply.
"Left?"
"Yes."
"To where?"
"I don't know. He just… left. He didn't even say goodbye. It's worrying."
Tamaki furrowed his eyebrows, confused. Looking at the two ice cream cones in his hands, Tamaki threw them away into the trash and went into the arcade.
Meanwhile, Nejire stayed behind, still looking off to where Sora left.
***
"Eve."
Sora ran through the streets, searching for Toga. He had a little earpiece in his ears that is directly connected to Eve.
"Yes, Master?" Eve responded through the earpiece.
"I need you to locate Himiko Toga, a friend of mine. She is going through some problems right now and I am on my way to help her. Only tell me where she is. Do not help me and do not worry about anything else."
"Master, she is 12 miles (~19 km) northeast of your current location."
Eve responded instantly after a couple of seconds and Sora followed them swiftly. He turned his body and burst forward at an even faster speed than before. His footsteps left shallow holes in the ground as he pushed his body forward and disappeared in an instant. His sheer speed is incredible and the force he carried left footsteps in the ground as he cared not where he was running.
Whether it be on the street or through a park, Sora ran and left the ground beneath his feet all ruined. He broke down trees, bent metal fences, pushed cars aside…
The only thing Sora bothered dodging were the people.
The force he carried from running so fast and the strength of his body would end up killing someone if he hit them at the speed he is going.
"Master?"
"What's the matter, Eve?"
Sora continued running, approaching Eve's location rapidly.
A short silence came through the earpiece before Eve continued speaking. Strangely enough, her voice seemed to contain some more emotion than usual.
And it made Sora smile.
Eve was growing, and she was developing emotions and her own thoughts.
"I've found a little girl."
"You found a little girl?"
Sora questioned and listened to Eve as she retold the story of what she witnessed and what the little girl had told her. How the little girl suffered every day, at the hands of a psychopath. The little girl had no one to rely on, no family, and how she was all alone.
The news caused Sora to frown.
"What will you do, Eve?" Sora asked Eve a crucial question.
The other side went quiet. She was thinking for herself. Maybe Eve had the little girl Eri by her side right now and was looking at her. Eve could be thinking what to do and how to do it. The problems and the issues that could arise from any possible choice she made.
"I…"
"Eve…" Sora interrupted Eve. His face was serious but he had full trust in Eve. "Think about it carefully. The choice you make will affect that little girl for the rest of her life."
Sora listened and smiled.
She was thinking about it again and she was putting more seriousness into it. It wasn't long before she answered Sora's question with clear determination.
"I will take care of Eri."
Sora relaxed and chuckled.
"I believe in you Eve. I'm sure you can accomplish that by yourself."
"By myself?"
At that moment, Eve paid close attention to Sora's words.
"Master, are you not going to offer help?"
"Eve. Right now, I am unsure if I will be returning. I might be gone for a short while, or a long time."
Sora spoke calmly, his voice flowing smoothly despite how rushed he was going to save and help Toga. In fact, he seemed to see a chance to grow rapidly.
He could feel the strength in his body surging and thoughts running in his head faster.
"Master, I will help you!"
"No Eve. You have made the choice to help that little girl. You are not allowed to back away now," Sora told her sternly, causing Eve to go quiet. He could vividly see her clenching her hands in his head.
Sora smiled.
"Don't worry. I will return one day. Maybe not today or soon, but I will return."
"Master… I will wait for you."
"Eve, I only need one thing right now."
"Anything Master!"
Eve responded quickly, afraid that Sora will not need her help at all.
"Take Toga away while I deal with the heroes and police men."
"Yes, Master!"
At that response, Sora took off the earpiece and destroyed it.
He felt free and a serene calmness.
Right now, he was going to disappear from the lives of his family and friends for an unknown amount of time. He's expecting it, and he will allow it to happen.
He's told his mother and now Eve is aware of it. That is all he needs right now.
***
Outside of the arcade, Tamaki came back out with Mirio right behind him. They went up to Nejire and started talking with her, their curiosity about Sora springing up.
It was rare for Sora to leave like this. No, not rare, never even heard of. Sora is always calm, always serene, always patient and never in a rush. He had never left without saying goodbye, yet it had all happened today.
It worried them.
"Sora left in a hurry?"
Mirio appeared, some concern in his voice.
"Mm."
"How long ago?"
"About… four minutes ago."
Mirio frowned as he looked at Nejire and put away her phone after checking the time. He looked over at Tamaki and then smiled.
"Let's go after him. He might need our help," Mirio suggested.
Nejire perked up. Her eyes lit up and she turned to look at Mirio with a smile and over to Tamaki. She nodded her head and grabbed both their hands before running off into the direcion Sora had run off to.
"Let's go now! I know where he had run off to!"
Leading the way, Nejire eventually let go of their hands and tried running faster. They ran and ran, eventually running into a large crowd. There were gasps and whispers as they talked and surrounded an area.
Nejire and the rest were going to go around them when they noticed another area filled with people. They looked at the group of people and found it odd. Coming to a stop, they noticed more and more groups of people looking at something.
"Excuse me, what happened here?" Nejire asked a lady.
The lady turned to look at Nejire, turning her gaze away from whatever she was looking at with the rest of the group.
"It was a little scary. A handsome boy came by here earlier. He was running so fast, nobody could see what he looked like until he stopped for a second at this exact same spot."
The lady pointed behind her, at the center where everyone was looking and pointing at.
"Then he disappeared! All we could hear was the loud sound of the concrete breaking and loud steps. The boy was gone!" The lady exclaimed in awe as she turned and pointed at a certain direction.
Following her hand, Nejire and the rest also turned and saw many groups of people surrounding various places. Either on the streets or sidewalks, Nejire and the rest also saw some cars with dents in them and broken trees.
At that moment, Nejire, Mirio and Tamaki looked at each other, concern painted on their faces. A single sentence popped into their heads at the same time.
What is happening?
