Chapter 237
Chapter 237 – The Nameless Hero
“Now that the dispatched Guardians have fully become veterans and casualties are decreasing, don’t you think it’s getting better with the increasing number of Guardians in the country?”
“Of course, Minister, you’d like to control the growing armed groups domestically, but honestly, will that really work?”
In the meeting room, Lee So-Yeon bitterly smiled at the opponent’s words. The opponent, a seasoned politician, spoke in circles, but now Lee So-Yeon could understand such statements in a single go.
What was being indirectly referred to in the talk about Guardians was none other than the desire to limit the military activities of Users.
“It’s because of him. However, Minister, you can’t do anything about him legally.”
“Th-that…”
To be precise, it was a single User who was the problem. Someone who freely moved both domestically and internationally, ruthlessly hunting down Bugs that crawled out of the Gates.
Those who were saved by him or ordinary citizens revered him as the Black Wolf, a great hero, complete with mystery and overwhelming power, but those in the know were aware of a different fact.
He would stop at nothing to eradicate Bugs. Unlike other Users, he actively employed his might and abilities.
And those who were most likely to fall victim to that power weren’t ordinary citizens but those in positions of responsibility and authority. Given they had already suffered multiple times, it was only natural for them to be wary of him.
“Still, if we make it officially illegal, he’ll feel the burden and restrain himself. I’m not suggesting anything with ulterior motives. We should just all act accordingly and officially for everyone’s safety.”
“Well, I wonder if he’ll feel burdened?”
Already aware of his identity, Lee So-Yeon couldn’t hold back a chuckle at the opponent’s words. He might have wavered in the past, but the current him would never be shaken.
Especially since she could see that a sturdy and reliable support was already present whenever they met and spoke.
“I dare say it’s better to stop trying to keep that person in check. I’m not saying it to protect him, but rather to avoid doing something pointless. After all, he’s only interested in killing Bugs.”
Lee So-Yeon persuaded the opponent in reverse. While they all intrinsically suspected she was linked to him, without evidence, she wouldn’t acknowledge it.
Additionally, Lee So-Yeon was already quite a significant figure herself, renowned both domestically and globally as one of the famous Users.
Now, her words could easily pressure the opponent in turn.
“Did that person really say so? Then does that mean it’s the President’s intention? Isn’t he the one who appointed him?”
“Well, I can’t say for sure, but from what I see, he seems more worried than malicious. It seems you’ve been actively moving around lately, which has piqued some interest.”
That evening, Lee So-Yeon secretly met him on the rooftop of a building and shared details about whom she had met and what they had discussed earlier that day.
He laughed bitterly at the implication that the government was wary of him.
“The main goal was to earn points, but wasn’t the situation desperate enough? If I hadn’t gone, the damage could have been greater.”
“That’s an undeniable fact.”
“It’s inevitable until the increasing Guardians settle down. It’s wartime; it can’t be helped.”
Just as they were breeding residents and gradually increasing their numbers on the screen, engaging in an increasingly larger war against the Bugs, Earth was the same.
Guardians on Earth continued to grow. Users were providing special trials and strength to those they deemed allies, turning them into Warriors.
Although the locals, representing an absolute majority of the population and national power, actively stepped up, the pivotal role in the war still belonged to them, and the Guardians had to fulfill their roles to secure victories against the evolving Bugs.
While Jun-Young’s screen showed a degree of stability, the Bugs here were still fierce. It was time to minimize damage by leveraging anyone’s power.
“It doesn’t seem good for misunderstandings to keep piling up in this situation. No matter how much I initiated it, I have to resolve it.”
“Um, how?”
“Let’s meet and talk directly with the President. Lately, many have been approaching me, suggesting we have a chat whenever I appear, so we can use that as an excuse.”
His shocking proposal made Lee So-Yeon’s eyes widen. However, having already broken out of his shell and taken a step forward, Jun-Young spoke without hesitation.
‘No point in trying to stop him, right? Not to mention, the President isn’t someone who couldn’t communicate. Maybe they could have a meaningful conversation instead.’
Instinctively feeling anxious, Lee So-Yeon shook her head to dispel the unease. She trusted him that much. There was no way he would engage in meaningless actions.
*
“Today, almost ten people died or were injured by Bugs. I’ll be going out shortly. You can leave if you wish.”
In the late afternoon office, he sighed and began preparing to leave. His expression was less than cheerful.
To be honest, he couldn’t show a good expression these days. Ever since the massive war between humanity and Bugs had begun on a distant continent, there had been casualties daily due to indiscriminate retaliation by Bugs.
Although martial law had not been declared, the growing unease was undeniable.
‘The Nameless Hero.’
Certainly, amidst all this, there were those gaining public support based on their exceptional abilities. He looked seriously at the image of the man displayed in a report.
The countless cheers and admiration directed at him. Yet, although they had a hero like this in the country, he couldn’t just celebrate it.
For a different reason than those around him, who perceived him as an uncontrollable variable threatening their own positions.
“Huh?”
But just as he was about to get up, something whisked past his body. Not realizing it was a Silence spell blocking the surrounding noise, he opened his eyes wide in shock.
“Mr. President, shall we chat?”
“Y-you! How!”
He staggered in shock as Jun-Young suddenly appeared from behind. Although Jun-Young could open a portal using pictures, he refrained from mentioning that internet articles were circulating with images of the office.
“Are you afraid of me, Mr. President?”
“I can’t say I’m not afraid.”
In the tense atmosphere, Jun-Young spoke with ease, while beads of cold sweat ran down the President’s forehead. It was due to the disparity in their power. From the President’s perspective, Jun-Young was a superhuman capable of killing a person with bare hands.
The social status of being the President, ranked number one in the order of precedence, was hardly of assistance in a one-on-one situation like this.
“I’ve never harmed anyone, nor do I wish to. I detest having to do so.”
“I think the same.”
“Then why do you keep trying to get on my nerves? I’m merely doing what is necessary in necessary situations.”
Jun-Young smiled wryly at his reply. He was confident he could win not only in brute strength but also in logic.
“Maybe it’s for the future.”
However, the continuation of his words was something Jun-Young had not anticipated.
“The Nameless Hero provides hope and faith to many, being a significant help in these tough times for our society. He is, quite literally, a hero, and many owe their lives to him, allowing them to continue living. However, we know nothing about him. This world isn’t simply a creation out of a writer’s mind, you know? Nobody knows what that future holds, and if something were to happen to the hero hiding his identity, the shock would be immense.”
He calmly began to speak from his standpoint as a leader who must lead the majority of ordinary citizens.
“I am the representative chosen by the people. It is my duty and responsibility to lead them. However, if something physically outside my capabilities occurs, I can’t fulfill that duty. People will choose to believe the hero rather than the government.”
“That’s a perspective I hadn’t considered.”
Jun-Young was slightly taken aback hearing about the issues arising from his actions. If he genuinely wished to act as a hero, perhaps it wouldn’t be a problem, but that wasn’t the case.
“Then…”
“Wh-what is this!”
A moment of silence fell, and just as Jun-Young was about to speak again, an astonishing event unfolded. A strong wave erupted just outside the building, creating a Gate.
‘Surely, they aren’t aiming for the President?’
Coincidence would not suffice to account for such cunning actions by the Bugs. Having infected the surrounding people with parasites to target the head of state, it wouldn’t be surprising if they laid an open sniping trap by opening a Gate.
In fact, upon seeing the Bugs bursting into the building, Jun-Young was compelled to believe that.
“Back!”
Jun-Young shoved the President behind him.
Simultaneously, a gunshot rang out, and a towering monster, walking on two legs like a human, bulldozed its way into the office using its muscular arms.
“I get what you’re worried about. But it doesn’t look impossible to resolve.”
“Ah, in front!”
“We need a new hero. That person can get closer to the people better than I can and can cooperate with the government as well. I firmly believe they’ll definitely show up.”
Jun-Young spoke as he swung his sword at the advancing enemy, relaying his thought-out solution.
The President, startled, barely grasped the situation, but Jun-Young’s sword swiftly slashed the enemy, freezing them so they couldn’t regenerate.
‘There will surely come a time when someone like Riena appears in this world. Perhaps someone is already emerging.’
It wasn’t an unfounded belief. Having met and nurtured a hero named Riena, he thought there was certainly someone like her in this world.
“Don’t rush your thinking too much; we still have time.”
Afterward, Jun-Young dashed forward to deal with the enemies outside, leaving behind those words.
The President remained in the office, gazing at the back of the departing figure.
‘I’ve been saved by a hero too. He’s right. There’s still time.’
With a bemused smile, he staggered to his feet.
