Chapter 219
Chapter 219 – Struggle (9)
‘Where the heck are we going?’
The survivors spent another day following the vehicles ahead on the road.
It had been days of relentless travel. The highways and main roads were clear enough to cover the distance in a single day, but the roads that had been neglected over the past few months, along with swarming zombies, continued to obstruct smooth movement.
If it weren’t for the truck’s cargo overflowing with supplies, I would’ve thought it faster to abandon the vehicle and walk.
“We’ve cleared the road. Let’s start moving again.”
Despite this, they were able to push forward because they possessed incredible strength to clear away the wrecked vehicles blocking the way and fight off the countless zombies by firing bullets indiscriminately.
At the center of this was Riena, piercing through the obstructed roads like a spear. With such overwhelming firepower, they could freely acquire the abandoned supplies.
“Look over there.”
“Could it be other survivors?”
In the midst of it all, other survivors began to approach them. Unlike the robbers, these were true survivors who had come looking for a way to live.
“They’re accepting them.”
After cautiously gauging Junyoung’s reaction, Riena welcomed the trembling survivors into their group. Growing the size of their group was necessary, leaving no other choice.
This was why they had brought a truck full of supplies from the military base.
‘We’ll need people to occupy, defend, and farm the facility.’
As Junyoung controlled his character and watched this scene unfold on the screen, he was fully intending to utilize the survivors for his plans.
In games, a quest ends after clearing it once, but now they needed to attempt it repeatedly to mass-produce the vaccine.
‘Have we finally arrived?’
After clearing the path, they reached a small city with a view of the blue sea. Nearby stood a large research facility, the destination they needed to conquer.
“Is that the place? But what exactly is that building?”
“I don’t know. Let’s fight it out first!”
They began battle to clear the zombies near the facility. With a few more survivors joining them in units, their numbers grew to over ten as they unleashed a hail of bullets at the approaching zombies.
“Whoa, it’s a big one!”
Perhaps due to its proximity to an important facility, there were quite a few special zombies too. Ochanwoo, having barely defeated a special zombie spewing venom from its belly, was horrified to see a gigantic zombie charging towards them.
‘What’s that thing?’
It was a variant bigger than the usual special zombies. The grotesquely swollen body of the monster was towering enough to be at eye level with someone standing atop a truck.
The hurriedly fired bullets buried themselves in its tough flesh and muscle, failing to deliver any meaningful damage. In fact, it was a monster close to a boss monster that players were supposed to focus on.
“Grenade!”
It seemed that grenades were the only thing that could deal any real damage. Just when Ochanwoo was about to grab a grenade upon his companion’s words, someone was rushing toward the creature at breakneck speed.
“I don’t see any more big ones!”
Riena, having leapt off the wreck nearby to soar into the air, swiftly decapitated the giant with one clean slice, landing gracefully on the ground as the massive body fell.
*
‘If the story holds, there should still be survivors inside the facility. Researchers.’
Having contributed to cleaning the nearby zombies along with others, Junyoung headed toward the facility after Riena’s display of strength to deal with the last wave of zombies. The zombies inside had long been drawn out by the noise, leaving the building silent.
“It wouldn’t be wise to have everyone follow. It’s better for some to guard outside.”
The survivors didn’t immediately follow the two into the facility but split into groups to stand guard outside.
Thanks to this, only a few, including Ochanwoo, could enter the facility following the two.
“Who would have thought there’d be a place like this underground?”
Their destination was below ground. Unlike an ordinary research center above, the entrance was blocked by an enormous iron door.
It was a door so heavy and solid that even the special zombie they had just seen wouldn’t be able to break through.
‘All the technology and facilities are intact in here. If we can continuously supply samples of the special zombies, which are essential materials for the vaccine, we can keep clearing the vaccine quest.’
He felt completely reassured as the situation mirrored the game strategies he had known thus far. If they managed to properly operate and guard this place, achieving a steady supply of the vaccine was within reach.
“Are they not going to open it?”
There were definitely people inside. They must have known what was happening outside and who was standing at the door.
Yet, the massive iron door remained silent. Junyoung was slightly bewildered since, in the game, it would have opened automatically, and now, in reality, he scratched his head in confusion.
“Should we just break it down?”
Riena looked around cautiously, placing her hand on her sword and glancing at him. He quickly waved his head in panic, realizing what she meant.
“What’s going on here?”
In truth, the person inside wasn’t refusing to open the door but was in a state of panic due to what he had witnessed.
“Survivors arrived armed, attracting all sorts of attention, and the special types are reacting to that…”
He held onto his nearly bald head, almost completely shaven except for the sides. It was true he had hoped that rescue would come from outside, but the squad was far from what he had expected.
‘What the heck?!’
What surprised him the most was how they had defeated the special zombies that were stationed around the facility.
These monsters literally required military firepower to take down. A handful of survivors couldn’t manage it. Yet someone had killed that beast with a single slash using a sword, not just bullets.
Riena’s strength was sheer absurdity to those seeing it for the first time.
“W-wait, is that an order to open up?”
In his stunned state, he blinked at Ochanwoo, who, unable to endure the frustration, had torn a piece of paper and stylishly scrawled something on it with a marker, presenting it to the camera.
It was unsettling, but having been trapped alone inside this facility for months, he was more than exhausted already.
Whether it was good or bad, he didn’t want to be alone any longer, and so he finally opened the heavy gate.
“Ahem, cough.”
Before they reached him, he composed his thoughts and fixed his appearance, resembling someone who was supposed to present a quest involving providing vaccines.
“Who are you? Where is this place?”
“I’m Park Dong-soo. This is…was a research facility, to be precise. It was part of an international project.”
Finally, when they met, it wasn’t Junyoung, who couldn’t speak, nor Riena, who regarded him with wary eyes, but Ochanwoo, who spoke first.
Taking a deep breath and nodding, he finally began to reveal some truths about the disaster that had enveloped their world.
‘The story itself isn’t anything new or surprising.’
As senior researcher Park Dong-soo’s testimony unfolded, those around him began to express disbelief, while Junyoung sipped his coffee, finding it mostly consistent with the game’s story he already knew.
“Hey! You trash!”
“Ugh!”
The cliché tale about a virus leaking from biotechnology research and causing this situation naturally enraged the survivors, leading them to try to capture Park Dong-soo, who panicked and began to flee the lab, scattering what little hair remained.
“I was just one of the researchers following orders and conducting experiments! When it happened, I was completely unaware and on duty inside!”
“Stop! Right now, what’s important isn’t that. The reason we’re here. That depends on that man.”
The one to save Park Dong-soo from the brink of being beaten was Riena, who had been quietly listening.
Having disregarded anything she couldn’t understand, she finally spoke, causing the others to flinch and stop.
“The one I trust who guides us brought us here. The reason we’ve come to this land is to find a solution to the source of the plague. Do you know the answer?”
“The plague…yes. Although the outbreak grew uncontrollably just before we reached mass production, we certainly found a solution.”
Taking a breath, Park Dong-soo shivered under Riena’s golden gaze as he mentioned the vaccine.
Everyone’s eyes widened. They had all been hoping for miracles, but they had never anticipated that an actual cure existed.
“It’s possible to treat those not fully infected or mutated! If we have the materials and electricity, we can extract it without a problem in this facility!”
Thinking that providing the vaccine could be his lifeline, Park Dong-soo desperately pleaded. Thus, the vaccine quest, much like in the game, had begun.
“A vaccine? Something like that actually exists?”
“Then does that mean we can turn those monsters back into humans? No, could they not have become like that at all!?”
The survivors buzzed at the news of the vaccine. In a world where everything seemed to have crumbled, a glimmer of hope had emerged.
“Thus, we must guard this place thoroughly. Not a zombie, nor a thief shall dare approach.”
“But the materials are samples from those monsters, right? How do you plan on obtaining those?”
Everyone agreed on using this place as their base. However, a problem remained. The production of the vaccine that Park Dong-soo had mentioned required samples from the special zombies known as special types.
“We’ll form hunting parties. We’ll go out to catch those monsters, bring in others, and gather supplies. As we repeat that process, we’ll eventually be able to restart from here.”
Hearing this, Park Chan-woo spoke with a resolute expression. No one could retort against the words of this audacious former high school student.
It was risky, but it was also utterly necessary.
“I’ll do it. If I’m with that person.”
Of course, there were others willing to step up bravely like Park Chan-woo.
However, if they had to go out by themselves, they would certainly hesitate greatly. The only reason they could be this confident was due to the brilliant light leading them.
‘Like when I took potions, if I bring healing supplies, we can drive away the black monsters causing havoc outside.’
Riena realized the mission bestowed upon her. It was a mission granted to save and protect countless lives.
Having awakened with divine recognition due to faith and salvation, there was no reason for Riena to refuse this.
