Chapter : The War between the Reach and the Stormlands
The war in the Reach essentially was largely fought on the border, in mountainous regions around Summerhall.
The Reach, initially under prepared due to a poorly trained army (greenboys as they say in canon) had only larger numbers going for them.
That is, after Randyl Tarly's troops, that had initially been set to head toward the Riverlands were recalled by Mace. That order had been given before Battle of Ashford.
After that Battle, Randyl Tarly arrived with the rest of the troops, that offset the numbers significantly in the Reach's favor.
Stannis had tactical advantage, as well as the fact that Stormlanders are decidedly not green in battle. They also possessed an advantage with their familiarity with the terrain of the red mountains around Summerhall.
Stannis' retreat to that region, imo had been tactically sound. As they got time to recouperate, and removed the Reach's ability to field more reinforcement, as well the advantage that the Reach possessed in terms of home field terrain.
That part of the war never headed for any sort of siege based warfare, for while Summerhall is a very defensible position, Stannis didn't want to risk it all on that castle.
Plus, by then Stannis knew that Robert had landed in Stormlands.
Most of the war here was essentially hit and run tactics. Initially Stannis was able to give the Reach' forces a significant loss in manpower due to those tactics, eventually the Reach, especially Randyl Tarly wisened up and adapted.
Which caused Stannis to begin a slow retreat down the mountain and into Felwood forest.
On the way, he started burning any fields of crop and destroyed the food stores he could find, after taking the share for his own army.
This stopped the Reach from taking that food entirely for themselves. Now of course they wouldn't succeed burning everything, hence Luke requisitioning what he thought was enough in the previous chapter.
The small castle in Felwood, is not as defensible as Summerhall or Storm's End. If anything, I'd compare it to Ashford Castle.
Robert met up with Stannis here, and took command. Of course, Robert attempted to fight the Reach forces and take Randyl Tarly's forces on himself, but after the experience the army has gained battling, he didn't see the value in continuing that to its natural end.
In his mind, Rickard Stark had left to head south from White Harbour, but he'll face harsh winters.
Brandon Stark is facing off with Barristan Selmy at Stony Sept in the Riverlands, and Ned is attempting to Kidnap Aegon and Rhaenys.
Therefore, Robert felt he was open to march onto Kings Landing.
Obviously, his information is a little outdated, and inaccurate. But it's the best move he could make. It reduced unnecessary loss of life, and Stannis could retreat into the safety of Storm's End and hold.
Also, Stannis now finally met Davos. It was Davos who smuggled Robert and his party who travelled to Winterfell from Tarth to Storm's End.
Robert likely left Davos behind with Stannis.
Finally, for Mace Tyrell, now knowing some of all this, he made a choice.
He'll lay siege to Storm's End. Only this time, Mace can't really feast outside it's walls like he'd done in canon, Stannis burnt a lot of the food supplies that Mace would likely have used to set up those feasts.
And Randyl Tarly heads off after Robert.
I'd appreciate those with more clear strategic medieval warfare thinking abilities to critique this for me. I tried my best.
