Hearing Jacob's earnest words, Olive was impressed. His words had echoed in her heart and began to resonate in her head as if it were, excuse the redundancy, echo. Was family really that important for Jacob?
"Are your words true?" - asked Olive.
Those words were hard to believe, but not because there weren't like-minded people as Jacob, no. For her, those words were hard to believe because of the experience she had had throughout her life. Abe had been a very kind boyfriend. He always treated Emma and her well. Their relationship was always very warm and loving, but when the moment of truth came, he abandoned them. At first, Olive believed (as did Emma) that Abe would return, that he would return with them and everything would return to normal or at least that he would return from time to time from his travels to spend time together... But that never happened.
Olive and Emma were quite sad for years because of it, but their sadness did not improve when they received that letter. A letter where Abe showed them his new family and told them to never contact him again, that broke their hearts. They didn't understand why Abe had been so cruel to them. Their relationship was always good, they hardly argued. So why did Abe suddenly treat them that way, why did he abandon them for another woman? And above all: Why did he tell them never to contact him again? None of them could understand those words. Had they done anything that would have angered Abe in any way? Because there was no other explanation. No one could explain his sudden change of heart. Even Miss Peregrine was angered by Abe's decision and his lack of respect.
That's why those words were hard for him to believe because Jacob and Abe had the same blood running through their veins. What would happen if one day Jacob left and left them alone? She doesn't think any of the girls could bear Jacob to go away and leave them alone again. That's why she was skeptical to believe in his words.
"Listen Olive. I know what you and Emma have suffered and it is normal that you do not trust my words. But I swear to you on my life that there is not a hint of falsehood in my words. It is also true that right now I have no way of proving my words, of giving you any proof of it so that you calm down and feel calm. But in the future it will come, in the future the time will come to prove that I was telling you the truth. You will believe my words then" – I said.
It's normal that she doesn't trust me. But it's not because she just met me or anything like that. Their distrust is the fault of my grandfather, who abandoned them without warning and started a family behind their backs. I understand the pain they had to feel when they saw him happy and with another woman who was not them. That pain... it is something that cannot be explained in words. That's why she can't believe me, because she's afraid that this will happen again. Because even if I'm not my grandpa, I'm his grandson and that's a thing that I can't deny.
Seeing his expression of absolute seriousness, Olive began to believe in Jacob because at least, Jacob said those words. Words that never came out of Abe's mouth. That was enough for her for the moment.
"Okay, I believe you" – Olive nodded.
She still harbored doubts in her heart, but for now she believed him, no, she wanted to believe that his words were true.
"Perfect... but for now... I think we should leave. I just hope that someone didn't steal our clothes" – I said with a wry smile.
Before we dive in, we left the clothes on the beach, including my phone.
"Hehe, don't worry. I have already done this dozens of times and my clothes have never been stolen" – smiled Olive.
"And because the day repeats..." – I said.
"There is no possibility of unforeseen events" – Olive agreed.
"So... let's go. Miss Peregrine should be worried right now" – I said.
"Yes" - Olive nodded.
After this small, romantic moment, we both headed to the surface.
However, after climbing to the surface and returning to the shore (for some reason the boat did not go too far and we were able to get on it right away), we could see that our clothes were the same as we left them. Olive was right.
"I told you that no one would come and steal anything from us" – Olive said as she got dressed.
We were outdoors for a few seconds so we could dry off before putting on our clothes and then obviously we put them on.
After doing so, we both headed towards the orphanage. When we arrived there was no one outside and the lights were on. A symbol that everyone was already inside, probably waiting for the dinner. I hope Miss Peregrine won't be angry with us.
"Jacob, before we enter I want to tell you something" – Olive said suddenly.
"What do you want?" – I asked curiously.
When I looked at her face, Olive's expression became serious.
"Today I had a great time" – she said.
"And me. But you don't have to get serious just because of that" – I said with a smile.
"It's not that. I get serious about... the moment we had" – said Olive.
Ah... she refers to our romantic moment.
"Don't worry. Whatever you decide, I respect your decision" – I said.
"Thank you. But that's not what I meant" - Olive said.
"Mmm. Go ahead, I'll let you talk" – I said.
"Jacob, I really love you, that's not a lie. I liked you since we found ourselves in the remains of the orphanage on the other side of the loop. I didn't lie to you" – said Olive.
"Oh, thank you" – I said somewhat embarrassed.
Well, along the way I looked at her status in the system and I could see that Olive's favorability had reached 65.
"But you're right, I still have feelings for your grandfather and it wouldn't be fair to you or me if we started dating in these conditions. But I promise that I will think seriously about our taht and clarify our relationship in a near future" – said Olive.
I see... Normally I would be nervous. But with the peculiarity that I have... I already know the result.
"And I will respect your decision" – I nodded.
"But promise me one thing" – said Olive.
"Sure, tell me what you want and if I can, I'll promise you" – I nodded.
For a pretty girl, whatever.
"If I choose to be with you... I want to be the first. Even if they confess to you later, it has been with me that you have kissed first and I will not let anyone steal that position from me" – Olive said with a serious tone.
Is she saying what I think she's saying or am I going completely crazy?
"What do you mean?" – I asked feigning ignorance.
For the moment I will pretend to be ignorant, but I have perfectly understood the meaning of those words.
"You'll understand soon, much sooner than you think. But you must promise me that" - said Olive.
"Okay. I promise" - I nodded.
It's funny. In the movie, Olive, although in the movie she was called Emma, was Jacob's girlfriend and the first one he had in his entire life. Whereas, in this life, I will have Olive as my first wife. Isn't that curious?
"Your words are enough for me. But remember that you must keep that promise if I choose to be with you. Don't forget it" – said Olive.
She insisted on that a lot. It seems that she really wanted to be the first no matter what. Although if she wants to be, let her be. Anyway, I will not treat her differently because she is the first. For me, all my women will have the same place in my heart and I will not favor one over the other. That is something that is quite clear to me. Although Olive may not believe it and that's why she's claiming her first "place".
"I won't forget it, don't worry. Although you could explain everything to me. I don't understand anything you said" – I lied.
I want to try to get her to tell me.
"Nice try, but I won't tell you. Anyway, you'll find out soon" - said Olive.
I could use my persuasive skills to convince her to tell me, but... It wouldn't be fun.
"Ok, then I won't insist on it anymore" – I nodded.
Olive was going to say something else, but suddenly, the door of the orphanage opened showing Miss Peregrine right at the entrance.
"Mr. Portman, Miss Olive, you are 30 minutes late" – said Miss Peregrine frowning as she looked at her pocket watch.
"Sorry!" – we both said instinctively.
"I forgive you, but may such an incident not happen again" – said Miss Peregrine.
After nodding, we both entered.
What happened next was simple. We had a nice dinner with slightly different dishes than yesterday, probably due to Emma and Bronwyn. During dinner we not only had dinner without making any noise, but we also talked. And guess who was the topic of conversation today? That's right, me and Olive. Everyone wanted to know where we had been today and what we had done. The girls were particularly insistent on knowing the details of what happened on our day. However, and since we could not tell the whole truth, we simply said that we walked around the island for a while and then bathed on the beach. The boys seemed convinced by this explanation, but the girls looked at us suspiciously. As if they didn't believe us at all.
Anyway, after Miss Peregrine told everyone to stop bombarding us with questions, we started talking about other topics until it was time for me to leave. Honestly I didn't want to do it and in a few weeks everything would change, but I was sad to leave here and go back to the boring life on the other side... But for the moment I had to do that.
