A Peculiar very Peculiar (Miss Peregrine's home for peculiar children)

Chapter 37: CHAPTER 37 – A DAY WITH OLIVE

*Note: Anhother one. I hope you like it. In the next chapters, we'll see Jacob in a date with each girl and I assure you that each date is different than the previous one.

I'm sure you'll like a lot because I put a lot of effort and days of thinking about the dates. I'm not very good at things likes dates, but this time... the dates are so good that I surprised myself. The last one is the best of all but you'll have to wait a lot of days for that. More than 2 weeks.

But if you don't to wait so much, you can suscribe to my patreon where you'll be able to read chapters sooner than other people and it's very cheap, practically free, so give it a try!

...

When I left, I could see that it wasn't a particularly bad day (for Cairnholm, I mean). The sun could be seen slightly and the cold that had been the previous days had ceased a little. However, it was best to be warmly clothed because even so, it was cold. But apparently that was probably my opinion and probably my father's, because for all the Cairnholmians (I don't know their gentilic) I met along the way were in short-sleeved shirts. As if it wasn't cold at all and the cold was just an illusion of mine.

"I guess for them this is a hot day" – I sighed.

I, on the other hand, was quite cold. Not as cold as the previous days, but enough to be warmly clothed.

"Maybe I should have brought a jacket" – I sighed.

That's right, with all the excitement of coming to the island and finding the peculiar children, I completely forgot to look up what the climate of Cairnholm was. If I had remembered, I would have brought at least one jacket. Unfortunately, on this occasion, nerves worked against me.

Either way, on the other side of the loop, it's a good day. In fact, it's hot enough to swim on the beach and how the day repeats itself infinitely... I don't need to be warmly clothed there. Also, I'll spend most of the day there, so I just have to put up with the cold on the way out and then on the way back. It's easy.

Anyway, enduring the cold and before I knew it, I reached the loop and crossed it.

The first person I met on the other side was Olive, who seemed to be waiting for me.

"Good morning, Olive" – I greeted.

"Good morning, Jacob. You're quite early today" – Olive said.

The truth is that yes. Today was earlier than the previous days. Why? I guess the absence of blinds and the fact that it was a bit sunny today... made me wake up earlier than usual.

"Well, on the other side it's sunny and since I'm not used to sleeping without blinds... the rays of the sun woke me up more earlier than usual" – I said.

"I see..." – Olive nodded.

"By the way. Where are the others?" – I asked curiously.

"Today we will spend the day alone. At least until dinner time" - said Olive.

"It's not that I don't like it, but... Why?" – I asked without understanding.

"That's because everyone is taking care of their tasks. Tasks they didn't do yesterday..." – Olive replied.

As we were on our way to the mansion, I asked Olive about those "tasks."

"Excuse me, but... can I know what tasks they are?" – I asked curiously.

"Of course. Let's see... Emma and Bronwyn have gone hunting for dinner, Horace is, as always, busy with his book, Hugh is pollinating the flowers because he "forgot" to do it yesterday, Olive and the twins have the day off today and wanted to play, while Enoch... he is simply Enoch, he is not exactly the most sociable of all of us" – Olive explained.

"And Millard?" – I asked.

He had mentioned everyone but him.

"Oh, after breakfast he took off all his clothes and left. No idea where he is right now" - Olive said.

*Note: If you notice that Olive's excuses are very... simple or don't have nonsense for you, don't worry, I did this on purpose. You'll understand the reason in a few chapters.

"I see. By the way, in this house you don't eat? It's just that since you said that Emma and Bronwyn had gone hunting for dinner, I wondered if you really only eat two meals a day" – I said.

Now that I remember, we didn't eat yesterday either. Although I didn't realize it because I was having a great time.

"You see, normally, everyone takes care of different tasks and when they finish them, they're free to do whatever they want. Emma and Bronwyn's task is to hunt, that's their job every day, but yesterday... They didn't hunt anything because of our fun day at the beach, so today they have to hunt twice as much" - Olive explained.

Hmm, it all sounded believable, but there were several inconsistencies. For starters, I'm sure the twins and Claire would come to play with me instead of playing alone. Next, there is the topic of hunting. How many time does they take to hunt? I mean, they have been doing the same task for dozens of years so they should know the movements of each animal in the island and above all, but not least, why do they hunt when they can buy in the village? Although that's probably due to money or so I want to believe.

For some unknown reason, I feel that Olive was purposely hiding these things from me. As if she wanted me not to notice the inconsistencies in her explanations. Normally I would ask more questions, but I decided to stop. Why? Well, because if we spend the day alone, I will have the opportunity to deepen our relationship even more.

"Okay, so let's spend the day alone. What are we going to do today?" – I asked curiously.

"To begin with, I was planning to show you the rest of Cairnholm. You know, the other day we couldn't show you everything because we went straight to the beach" - said Olive.

"I think it's a good idea, and then?" – I asked again.

"Before dinner I have a surprise prepared that I am sure you will love. But you will have to wait until later" – said Olive.

"Can't you give me a clue at least? You have left me quite intrigued" – I said.

"No, if I tell you a clue, you could deduce it and then it would no longer be a surprise" – Olive denied.

"Well, then I'll look forward to it" – I said.

"That's how I like it. Come on, I'll show you the rest of the island" – said Olive.

Then, she grabbed my hand and we headed straight towards the village of Cairnholm.

We saw some places that I had already been shown yesterday. But that wasn't the important thing, the important thing was the radiant smile that Olive had on her face.

We were currently talking about trivial things, you know: What color do you like the most? What's your favorite food? What is it like to live in the future? Things like that, not at all important to some people, but important to us. Why were they important? Getting to know your future partner was essential for a relationship to work. I want to know everything about Olive, her tastes, hobbies, favorite food, favorite color, everything. But not just about Olive, I want to know everything about all the girls, Emma, Bronwyn, Fiona, Claire, and even the twins. Well, as I said, getting to know your partner is essential for a relationship, among other things, of course.

We continued talking to each other as we walked all over Cairnholm under the watchful eyes of people who had never seen a young man in these clothes and a beauty like Olive. In other words, the same thing happened as yesterday because they had forgotten everything or rather, for them that never happened.

Anyway. I found out that Olive's favorite color was blue, her favorite food was lamb steaks and that one day she would like to see what the future is like and walk through its streets.

"Unfortunately we can't be out of the loop for long" – sighed Olive.

I knew the reason, but it would be strange if I didn't ask.

"Why?" – I asked curiously.

"Because after three days, we would suddenly age and die. Is totally impossible for us to leave for more than three days" - said Olive.

*Note: here, people who reads the books and even watched the film, knows that the time that they can be out of a loop is very... confusing. In the film and in the first book, the author says that they can't stay out of the loop more than a few hours. But in the second or third book (I don't remember which one), the author says that they can be out of the loops three days. I, for myself, I decided that three days is esencial for the future, so in this fic (as in the books), the peculiars will be able to stay three days in the present (for now, of course). But I can't say anymore or I would you do a spoiler.

The truth is that, during all these years, Olive had dreamed countless times of going out into the outside world, going to the future and not only to see what it's like and how technology had advanced, but also to look for Abe. Unfortunately and until Jacob's arrival, neither Olive nor the others knew where Abe lived because he stopped writing letters to them years ago.

"That's a pity. But... we can still have fun here" – I said trying to cheer her up.

Probably her intentions to go out into the outside world, into the future, were not only limited to seeing what it's look like, but also to looking for my grandfather. I'm sure of it. I can't change or erase these memories, but I'll make her to fall in love with me and that the only reason for her to visit the future would be to see it and nothing more.

Until a few days ago, the existence of the peculiarity "Unbreakable Love" seemed essential to me for Olive and Emma to forget my grandfather and only think about me. But... As I got to know them, I was questioning more and more whether it would be ethical to use that peculiarity. After all, and even if I don't like it in the least, to make them forget their feelings for the person who onces they loved all of a sudden... It didn't seem ethical to me at all.

[Well, you can't remove the peculiarity. But if you want, I can reduce its effects to a minimum]

What do you mean by that?

[I mean that this peculiarity is integrated with your soul and can't be removed without disintegrating your soul. But I can weaken its effects]

What effects will have if you do that?

[She will forget her feelings of love towards your grandfather gradually and not instantly]

"How long will it take for those feelings to disappear?" – I asked curiously.

[It depends on the love the person have. It can take anywhere from 1 day to 3 weeks at most]

3 weeks? I think it's not bad at all. Although I still feel that they should be even less effective.

How would you feel if all of a sudden, all the feelings of love you felt for your ex lover suddenly disappeared? I think not very well. That's why I don't think it's too ethical.

[I'm sorry, but it can't be removed. That's the most I can do for you]

Okay, then weaken its effects to the maximum.

[Are you sure about that? Once that change is made, I won't be able to increase its effects again]

I'm sure. Besides, I'm sure I can make Emma and Olive stop loving my grandfather before the peculiarity does. I just have to be as romantic as I can. Yes, I am aware of my lack of experience in love, but if there is one thing I do not lack it is perseverance and patience. I'll get Emma and Olive to stop feeling those feelings for my grandfather within three weeks. I promise.

[Okay, I've already weakened the effects of your peculiarity to the maximum. Good luck in fulfilling your goals]

"Thank you" – I said.

"Why are you thanking me?" – Olive asked without understanding.

Shit, I said it out loud without realizing it!

"For this day, for yesterday. Thank you very much for accepting me despite having met just three days ago" – I said.

Fuck, they should give me an Oscar!

"Hehe, you're welcome. Besides, we all treat you like family and not just because you are Abe's grandson if that's what you were worried about" – smiled Olive.

And after this, we continued walking all over Cairnholm until the moment arrived, the moment when Olive was going to show me that "surprise"
