Chapter 4: The greatest treasure
Tony stood in front of a huge complex, its entrance marked with the kanji for "food." This place was his target: the Akimichi clan. A clan that had been around for over fifteen generations and maintained a strong relationship with the Yamanaka and Nara clans. If he could get adopted, it would be like having the backing of not just one, but three clans.
But he couldn't deny that something he thought wouldn't affect him was making him nervous. He hadn't had a good relationship with his original family; they loved each other, no doubt, but disputes always arose over certain issues, which affected everyone. The last conversation he had with his parents ended in a heated argument because they kept reminding him he was the only one of their children who wasn't married and tried to force him to be with women he didn't know. That's why he had locked himself away for the weekend, trying to relax and recharge so he could speak with them again.
Now, he would never be able to do that.
"Alright, let's go."
Just as he was about to enter...
"Are the exotic premium potato chips about to run out? Run!"
That was all he heard before being hit by something at high speeds and collapsing unconscious on the ground.
...Later, in a room at the Akimichi complex...
"Choji Akimichi! How many times have I told you not to run out of the house?" A large woman struck him on the head with a ladle. "Look now! You've left the poor boy unconscious. We're lucky he hasn't broken anything!"
"But Mom! The potato chips..."
"No arguments!" The woman stood firm. "No potato chips for a week!"
"NOOOOOOO!" A cry of despair and lament echoed throughout the Akimichi complex and its surroundings.
A ladle at supersonic speeds fell on his head, leaving him in silence.
"DON'T YELL, THE BOY IS STILL SLEEPING!" She said in an even louder voice. "CHOZA, TAKE THE BOY AWAY FOR A WHILE TO CALM DOWN!" The woman ordered.
"Yes, dear, but please, calm down," A large man with red hair and purple markings on his cheeks took the boy away from his mother's wrath.
"What's all that noise?" The woman heard from a room behind her.
Tony looked around, not understanding what he was doing there.
"Don't tell me I was hit by another truck?!"
I swear, if that's the case...
Fortunately, his doubts quickly dissipated when a woman entered the room, and he recognized her at a glance as Choji's mother. With short brown hair, crimson lipstick, black eyes, orange eyeshadow, and a large build like the rest of the clan.
"How are you feeling?" The woman asked. "Would you like something to eat?"
"I'm fine," Tony replied with a slightly disoriented expression. "Where am I?"
"You're in the Akimichi clan. My son accidentally hit you when he was leaving the compound," She explained.
"Akimichi?"
"Oh dear," The woman became concerned at his reaction. She didn't know if her hit had affected his head or if he was an outsider. "Wait here, I'll be right back."
Tony was left alone in the room, trying to sort out his thoughts. It seemed he had managed to get into the Akimichi clan, but not in the way he expected. The woman soon returned with another woman, and Tony's pupils contracted when he recognized the style of the person.
Someone from the Yamanaka clan!
Without wasting any time, he quickly discussed a last-minute plan with the System. And he was glad he acted quickly, because it seemed the person noticed his panic and raised her fingers to perform some kind of jutsu that made him lose consciousness.
"Mrs. Yamanaka! What are you doing?"
"Your reaction right now is very suspicious; it seemed like you were afraid of me," The woman in Venetian English-style attire explained. "You might be a spy from another village! I'm going to read your memory and clear up any doubts."
"This...
It wasn't the first time someone had sent a child to another village as a spy; they had been doing that for centuries. But something inside her told her that the unconscious boy was not a spy.
"Don't worry," Mrs. Yamanaka reassured. "The last thing he will remember is when your son knocked him out; he won't know we read his memory."
Although she still had doubts, Mrs. Akimichi didn't prevent her friend from acting.
Mrs. Yamanaka placed her hands on Tony's head and used her clan's technique to access his memories. At least, those the System allowed her to see. She kept her eyes closed for a few minutes, and when she opened them, she was surprised.
"Well?" Mrs. Akimichi had been on edge the whole time and needed to know what was happening.
Mrs. Yamanaka took a deep breath and told her everything she had seen. A poor but happy childhood with his family until a few weeks ago when some ninja bandits attacked the place. His family was scattered, and the boy's mother shouted for him to go to the Leaf Village to seek out the Akimichi clan, who would help him due to his grandmother's debt. The boy managed to hide but unfortunately witnessed firsthand as his family was massacred and their home burned. The boy wandered disoriented, was attacked by wild beasts he narrowly escaped, ate roots to survive, and endured harsh weather until he reached the village. Not knowing where the Akimichi clan was, he temporarily stayed with the Inuzuka and accidentally ended up at the cemetery, where he left with tears in his eyes, remembering his deceased family. Only today did he manage to find the complex and stood at the door not knowing what to do next. The rest of the story was already known.
"Poor boy!" Mrs. Akimichi had tears in her eyes after hearing the story. "But why was he scared when he saw you?"
"It's because the ninja woman who killed his family looks like me," Mrs. Yamanaka looked at the unconscious Tony with troubled eyes. "It would have been strange if he hadn't reacted the way he did. If I hadn't knocked him out, he might have tried to attack me in revenge for his family."
"I see."
"Do you know anything about the debt his mother mentioned?" She asked with curiosity.
"I don't think so," Mrs. Akimichi thought for a while. "But my late mother told me she had been helped many times in the past and still had promises to fulfill. Maybe the boy's family had one of my clan's promises."
"And what will you do with him?" Mrs. Yamanaka asked. "I'll be honest with you, I've seen many children in his situation because of the wars, and if we leave him in an orphanage, he could be scarred for life."
Mrs. Akimichi looked at Tony and only now noticed the slight swelling in his eyes. The boy must have cried a lot just before arriving at the clan complex. Mrs. Yamanaka didn't interrupt her friend's thoughts. Now she felt bad for being too suspicious of the poor child.
He wasn't a spy, just a boy who had lost everything he loved and was clinging to his last hope.
"I'll ask Choza to have the clan adopt him," The large woman said with determination. "Since his mother placed her hope and her greatest treasure in my clan, I'll make sure the boy has a roof over his head, a full stomach, and people to trust."
