Chapter 16: The Night That Shouldn’t Have Ended
Aoi ran.
Through the streets of Tokyo, past blurring lights and nameless faces, she ran like her life depended on it.
Because maybe it did.
Maybe if she ran fast enough, the world would rewind itself. Maybe she could reach him before his words became irreversible.
Her lungs burned. Her legs ached. But she didn't stop.
She couldn't.
She dialed his number—again, again, again.
No answer.
She nearly screamed in frustration. "Pick up, damn it!"
Nothing.
Only silence.
---
The train station.
Somewhere deep inside, she knew.
Haruki always loved the quiet of empty stations at night, the way the world seemed to pause.
She forced herself forward, ignoring the weight in her chest.
The platform was nearly empty when she arrived. Just the cold wind, flickering streetlights, and—
There.
A lone figure stood near the edge, his back to her.
Haruki.
Aoi's breath hitched.
For a second, she could only stare. He looked… calm. Too calm. As if the storm inside him had already passed.
She stepped forward. "Haruki!"
He flinched. Slowly, he turned.
His eyes widened. "Aoi?"
"Step away from the edge," she said, her voice shaking.
He blinked, as if just realizing where he was standing. Then, ever so slightly, he smiled. "You came."
"Of course, I came! You—" She swallowed. "You left that note. You scared the hell out of me."
Haruki tilted his head. "It wasn't meant to scare you."
"Then what was it meant to do?" she snapped, stepping closer. "What were you thinking?"
He exhaled softly. "That… maybe this is the only thing I have control over."
Aoi clenched her fists. "You think this is control? Running away? Disappearing?"
His gaze lowered. "I wasn't trying to hurt you."
"Well, you did." Her voice broke. "You really did."
Silence.
Haruki sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Aoi… I—"
But before he could finish, the distant rumble of an approaching train filled the air.
Aoi's heart pounded. The moment felt like a fragile thread—one wrong move, and everything would snap.
The train grew closer.
She reached for his hand. "Come with me."
Haruki stared at her, something unreadable in his eyes.
For a second, just a second, she thought he might take it.
But then—
The train rushed past.
And when she blinked—
Haruki was gone.
