A life with the Author

I understand you Komi-san

The break soon ended and class resumed like normal. I tried interacting with Komi as much as possible to make her get used to interacting with other people during the remaining class.

I got a few glares from the boys in my class but they didn't do anything like they did to Tadano in the anime.

With no one to stop it, time moved on and the periods flew by before the end of the day was marked by the beautiful sound of the last bell.

Have I ever mentioned about how the last bell is the most beautiful sound in the whole world?

{Yes you did.}

Good, good. It is the most beautiful sound in the world.

I got up and just as I was about to leave the school as usual from the window, I felt a tug on the end of my blazer. I turned around and saw Komi catching my blazer with both hands in an attempt to stop me.

I was confused and looked at her questioningly. My expression was asking her the reason why she was stopping me.

But soon I realized I would have a better luck hoping for the answer from a rock than from Komi. So I asked her.

"Do you want me to stay until everyone leaves?"

To my question she hurriedly nodded with eyes closed. Her face was ever so still, not showing even an ounce of emotion or feeling.

But since her eyes were closed, I imagined her eyes showing emotions like hope and nervousness, like I expected her to be.

She was showing more emotion when she closed her eyes. I chuckled at that strange fact.

"Okay." I said before I sat back down on my seat. Then we both waited for everyone else to leave the classroom.

It was quite a long wait, especially with Komi just staring forward silently even without moving. She was like a shaolin monk or something

Finally, everyone was out of the classroom. It was only me and Komi in the silent and empty room.

The girl - seemingly made by the God with perfection in mind - got up from her seat and her long elegantly legs stride towards me.

She stopped when she was right infront of my table. I was still sitting on my chair and looked up to her doll-like face and wonder what she was trying to do.

She stood still, seemingly gathering all of her courage and I felt like she was extremely nervous even if she didn't show it.

Then her exquisite lips which were naturally glossy and pink parted to let out the words she so wanted to say.

But what came out were not words. They were just gibberish sounds which rang out for a moment before they evaporated into a meaningless silence.

"Wa-wa-wa-wi-wi.." She continued muttering, trying extremely hard for some time before she stopped.

She looked as emotionless as ever but I felt her disappointment.

She paused for a long time and I waited patiently. Allowing her to try again as many times as she wanted.

Like I promised.

Then she opened her mouth again but it was the same.

Sounds came out but they were senseless. She wasn't able to communicate.

My heart goes out for her as I watched her try again and again. I was berating myself why I couldn't understand her like Tadano did.

'The average guy could do it so why can't I?' I questioned myself before I tried, with newfound determination to read her.

Understand her.

After many failed attempts, it seemed Komi's spirit finally gave in and she suddenly turned around.

I wasn't able to stop her as she swiftly left the class.

I watched her leave and cursed at myself for not stopping her. I stayed in my seat for some more time and let my thoughts wander around before I got up and jumped out the window.

I went home immediately and even though I trained hard in the morning, I trained again in the evening just as hard, releasing my frustration.

[3rd POV]

Komi-san knew that Fujita might not want to be her friend, but she wanted to be his.

So no matter what, she decided to give it a try.

She wanted to ask him to be her first friend even though she knew she might be rejected. But still she wanted to do it.

But there is a twist. A restriction she put on herself.

If she wanted to ask him to be her friend she would have to be worthy first. And to prove her worth she would ask him to be her friend orally.

She wouldn't write it. She would actually ask him.

That was the least she could do.

Deciding that, she was determined to ask him to be her friend after school.

When the school ended, she stopped Fujita from leaving and asked him to stay. Luckily he did as she requested and stayed.

After everyone left, she got infront of him and gathering all the courage she could muster, she tried to ask him.

At first the world froze when she tried to talk but as always, Fujita waited until the world unfreezes.

Then she did it. She asked him to be her friend.

But it seems that her words never reached him. Her words and whatever she said turned into a gibberish noise before they reached his ear.

He was still patient since he was so nice and allowed her to try again and again.

Like he promised.

So she tried again and again. Multiple times.

But she failed as many times as she tried.

So in the end, she ran away, embarrassed, defeated and depressed.

Though that was not the end. Komi-san tried again the following days.

And she promised to try until she finally say what she wanted to say to him.

[MC POV]

The following three days were full of small, seemingly insignificant yet extremely important events between Komi and me.

I was constantly trying to help her and I did so by talking to her and giving her daily tasks for her to complete, like for example buying things in the cafeteria.

During this short time, I had become quite attached to her. Well as attached as a person can be with a living doll I guess.

Relationships were very difficult to develop when the other person had no ability to ecpress themselves. My relationship with Komi and my relationship with Marin in three days was very different.

I have come to care for her like how a person would care for a new adopted kitten. I hate that I felt that way but I couldn't help it. That's just how I felt.

I wanted to protect her and see her grow up.

And during the past three days, she would stop me at the end of school and try to say something to me like she did before.

But for three days straight she had failed.

I felt sympathy and also felt some guilt that I still couldn't read her at all.

Seeing her try so hard to say something to me, it was heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.

I wondered what she was trying to say to me for her to be this determined.

I was really looking forward to it.

I wanted to know what she wanted to say.

...

Today was friday and just like any other day, both me and Komi stayed behind and after everyone left, we both walked at the front and stood facing each other near the blackboard.

Then she tried again.

"Wi-wi-wi-wi--be-be-beb-be-fi-fi-if-if-" she stuttered and muttered. Her face was impassive and expressionless, but I could feel her struggling from her voice.

I observed her extremely carefully while she did so. My ears were trying their hardest to make sense of what she was saying.

'I can't understand you Komi-san'

I was also as frustrated as her that I couldn't understand what she was trying to say.

I thought with my knowledge about the anime and with enough time I spent with her, I would eventually be able to understand her a little, but no.

It was blank.

I can't read her at all.:

I cursed myself as I tried harder and harder. Seeing her earnest eyes, I got more determined to understand her.

I could tell how much she was struggling. How much she was trying to communicate with me.

I could see her determination dwindling from her face as she failed and failed and failed.

I coul-...

...

...

Wait.

Wait a minute.

I could see how she was struggling. I could see the determination on her face dwindling.

I widen my eyes as I realized, I could somehow read her emotions now.

"Will, you. Will you-" I also noticed how I was able to catch what she was trying to say briefly.

Her fingers curling up in frustration, her feet planting firmly in stubbornness and the sweat on her head.

I could use those minute details to somehow understand what she was trying to say to me. It was not just her voice now, but her whole existence seemed to speak to me.

She was no longer the unreadable doll in my eyes. I could feel her now.

*ting!!*

I hear the system prompt and looked at the new notification I got.

[Due to the special skill 'Top G' an impossible skill has been gained after you have done the necessary work and have the necessary desire.]

[Skill gained :-

Komi-san's language : Novice]

I read the notification with wide and shocked eyes and when that disappeared I turned my eyes back on Komi.

Her eyes were closed and they scrunched up in desperation. She opened her mouth and what came out was no longer gibberish anymore.

Although barely, they were coherent.

"Will..." She said.

"Will,.You."

I listened closer to hear what she was saying.

"Will.you.be.my.friend." I heard the tiniest whisper and she stopped.

She stayed there, her eyes looking down in defeat for a long time.

"Yes." I said and her head perked up in shock and I could see the surprise on her face.

She tilted her head and I knew exactly what she meant by that gesture. She wanted to hear it again, she asked me what I just said.

"Yes, I would love to be your friend." I said and saw her eyes snapped open in shock.

Her face reflected her disbelief as her mouth gaped like a fish on land. I saw and knew that she did not expect my answer at all.

I was always wondering what you wanted to say to me so badly, so this was it Komi. I should've asked you first but..

Did you want to be my friend that much?

If so then..

Yes.

Yes, I would love to be your friend.

Because..

'I understand you Komi-san.'
