Chapter 141: [141] Add one more
Kaoru, sensing the weight of the situation, took a long, steady breath, placing the glass of vodka carefully on the table. His crimson eyes softened as he gazed at Reika, who stood before him trembling, her head bowed and cheeks flushed a deep red.
"Reika," Kaoru began, his tone calm but firm, "look at me."
Reika hesitated for a moment, her hands clenched tightly at her sides as she struggled to meet his gaze. Slowly, she lifted her head, her watery blue eyes filled with regret and confusion.
"What just happened…" Kaoru paused, choosing his words carefully, "I can see it wasn't something you planned. But I need you to be honest with yourself, and with me. What is it that you truly feel?"
Reika's lips quivered as she struggled to find her voice. "Kaoru-sama… I… I don't know what's come over me." She swallowed hard, clutching at her skirt as if it were the only thing grounding her. "Ever since I've started working under you, I've admired your strength, your kindness, your ability to make everyone feel valued. Those feelings… they grew into something more. Something I couldn't control."
Kaoru listened intently, his expression unreadable but his presence steady, like an anchor in the storm of emotions swirling around Reika.
"And tonight," she continued, her voice breaking slightly, "I saw how gentle you were with Asuka-san. The way you treat her… it made me realize how deeply I wish I could be in her place. But I know that's wrong. I know it's selfish."
Tears began to well in her eyes as she clasped her hands together tightly, her knuckles whitening. "I crossed a line, Kaoru-sama. I betrayed your trust, and I—"
Kaoru raised a hand, gently halting her words. "Reika," he said softly, "you're not the first person to feel conflicted about matters of the heart, and you won't be the last. Emotions aren't something you can suppress or dictate at will. But what matters is how we handle them."
He leaned forward slightly, his tone even but laced with understanding. "I respect you, Reika, not just as someone who works under me but as an individual. And because of that, I can't overlook this. Not because I'm angry or disappointed, but because it's important we address what you're feeling."
Reika bit her lip, her tears threatening to spill over. "But… what should I do? How can I make this right?"
Kaoru's expression softened further. "First, forgive yourself. Mistakes happen, and this is something we can work through. Second," he leaned back slightly, his gaze steady, "we need to set clear boundaries. You're an invaluable part of the team, and I don't want you to feel like you have to distance yourself or carry this burden alone."
Reika nodded slowly, her tears finally spilling down her cheeks. "Thank you, Kaoru-sama… I'll do my best to move forward."
Kaoru smiled faintly, reaching for a tissue from the table and handing it to her. "Good. And Reika, remember this: You're not alone in facing these feelings. We're all navigating our own struggles, but what defines us is how we choose to deal with them."
Reika accepted the tissue with trembling hands, dabbing at her eyes as she took a deep, shaky breath. "I understand. I'll work on sorting through my emotions and ensuring they don't affect our professional relationship."
Kaoru nodded approvingly. "That's all I ask. And Reika?"
She looked at him, her expression filled with a mixture of gratitude and lingering sadness.
"I value you not just as someone who works for me but as a person. Don't forget that."
Reika's cheeks flushed anew, though this time it wasn't from embarrassment or shame, but from a small flicker of hope. "Thank you, Kaoru-sama… for your kindness."
Kaoru picked up his glass again, taking a small sip as he turned his gaze back to the city lights outside. "Now, I think we could both use some rest. It's been a long night."
Reika nodded, standing and bowing deeply. "Yes. I'll take my leave. Goodnight, Kaoru-sama."
"Goodnight, Reika," Kaoru replied, his voice steady yet gentle. As she exited the room, he let out a deep sigh, leaning back into the sofa.
Staring out at the sparkling cityscape, he murmured to himself, "Life really doesn't know how to take it easy, does it?"
Taking another sip of his drink, he allowed the quiet hum of the city to lull him into a moment of reflection, his mind swirling with the complexities of relationships, duty, and the delicate balance he was trying so hard to maintain.
