chapter 15
Understanding Unbelievable People.
Corridor leading to the Princess’s room.
The Director stood at the entrance of the corridor, glancing at the medicine brought by her personal maid, and let out a short sigh.
It had only been about six months since the young maid entered the Wüstenadel Castle. The girl, who was about fifteen years old, trembled because her arms, carrying a tray for a long time, were shaking.
But in the eyes of the Director, whose soles were burning, there was no way she could see the maid’s situation.
“Come closer for a moment.”
As the maid approached, the Director stuck her tweezers into the white medicine dish without hesitation. And she sucked the tweezers, covered in medicine, into her mouth.
“…There’s no difference in taste.”
The Director raised her head and took another bite of the medicine. Unaware of the maid watching her, whose expression was gradually becoming distorted.
After repeating it five times, the Director finally put her hand down.
“She must have been mistaken. It’s pointless for her to pretend to know everything without knowing anything…”
The Director licked her lips, feeling the fading bitterness.
“Bring me the tray, and you can leave. Don’t forget to clean my room.”
“Yes.”
“If you do it roughly like last time, you know you’ll be punished!”
As the maid left, the Director stared at the entrance of the Princess’s room with a determined heart.
“I have to impress that woman somehow.”
That was the only thought in the head of the director.
Although she looked down on the illegitimate child, she was still of noble descent. The princess would eventually return to the palace, and until then, if she continued to build her reputation as the princess’s personal physician, it was entirely possible for her to become the exclusive physician of the royal family.
Moreover, wasn’t the princess suffering from an incurable disease for several years? Just by saving the dying princess, she deserved to be praised for her accomplishments.
“So, I have to stick by the princess’s side until she returns to the palace.”
Even if she tried her best to impress the princess in various ways, wasn’t it not enough? Didn’t she fail to uphold her dignity in front of the princess yesterday? So today, she had to show off her skills to the princess no matter what.
“I’ve come this far, I can’t just become a laughing stock.”
With a firm determination, the director entered the room.
***
“I can’t do this. How could I let the princess down!”
The director’s shout echoed like the sound of a pig’s squeal. As soon as the director was chased out of the room, Countess Royelle opened her mouth.
“I apologize, Your Highness. It’s all my fault.”
“It’s not your fault. Don’t worry about it. I never thought I would easily accept it from the beginning.”
Her indifferent tone focused on the documents neatly placed on the desk.
Unfortunately, Director Estelon went into a rage as soon as he saw the documents containing the personal information of the council members.
As a result, Ludimine had no choice but to kick out the director without even taking the medicine.
“You can’t keep someone who runs wild without knowing their position by your side.”
If he had a skill like a skilled pharmacist that could cover up the stench, it might have been different, but there was no reason to keep someone with no skill and no understanding of their own boundaries by her side any longer.
“Director, leave the castle immediately tomorrow. And for my physician, let it be this person.”
Ludimine pointed to one of the documents on the table.
“Are you sure you’re okay with this person? Wouldn’t it be better to choose more carefully if you’re going to choose someone anyway? Or-“
“It’s fine. Let it be this person.”
Ludimine quickly interrupted the Countess’s words. She didn’t need to hear the rest. She had always recommended ‘Eden’ as the physician.
“Rather, Piyaka, you must want to feel the wind.”
The nauseating smell of the director still lingered in the air.
“Yes, understood.”
Piyaka quickly opened the window wide. Then, along with a gust of wind, the sound of laughter echoed through the wide-open window.
“It must be Ellanyan. Always said we should uphold grace and etiquette….”
The Countess said as she organized the documents.
“She’s still young. We have to understand. She’ll quiet down soon, I’m sure.”
As Rudieminé closed her eyes while enjoying the pleasant breeze blowing, a refreshing wind and the sound of a cheerful child’s laughter pierced through the stifling thoughts that had burdened her mind until now.
Gyu-ru-ru. Gyu-ru-ru.
However, Ella’s laughter, which Rudieminé thought would soon fade away, continued to echo, and with that bright laughter, Rudieminé’s curiosity began to grow.
“Piyaka, bichukhae, da’o.”
What could be so enjoyable? Rudieminé leaned against Piyaka and turned towards the window.
In the garden, Ella, dressed in active wear, smiled innocently while holding a watering can. Ella’s governess also held a watering can in her hands, dressed in a light attire.
“Come to think of it, she said she was going to make a vegetable garden in the garden.”
It seemed like today was the day.
Messy hair covered in water and dirt, and clothes daubed with mud and dust. It was a sight that would certainly warrant a scolding from the Viscountess, but Rudieminé looked at Ella with a faint smile.
Grace and proper etiquette were important, but a young child should also be innocent and lively. Compared to herself, who had spent her childhood locked up in a gloomy study, Ella’s current spirited appearance was much more pleasant to look at.
“Nanny, do you know how to do this?”
“Well, I’m not sure either.”
“Oh! I’ll ask Idun!”
At Idun’s mention, Rudieminé’s eyes, which had been filled with a contented smile, narrowed.
Rudieminé looked in the direction Ella was running towards. At the end, a pharmacist dressed in white stood with a sickle in hand.
Ella was happily prancing around like a chick, and Idun listened to her chatter with a faint smile. As Rudieminé watched silently, not only Ella’s governess but also passing servants greeted Idun warmly.
“…A person who exudes such an unbearable stench.”
Rudieminé suddenly felt uncomfortable.
According to her intuition, he was an incredibly dangerous presence, so she couldn’t understand why everyone liked this pharmacist named Idun so much and didn’t know what to do about it.
Even if he was skilled at deceiving people, it was extremely difficult to manipulate people to the extent that they would turn to his side just by seeing him.
“And why did the author refuse to meet with me?”
Even the powerful aristocrats of the capital had never refused to meet with her, but that was precisely what happened when she suggested a meeting with that commoner pharmacist. And not just once, but twice.
He may have had his own reasons, but Rudieminé was a noble. With just a slight exaggeration, his actions could be seen as a blatant insult to the royal family, enough to warrant punishment.
“It’s typical for people to fall over each other when I extend my hand like this.”
Is he really not ambitious for success? Am I not intimidating enough? No matter how much she thought about it, Rudieminé couldn’t understand the situation she was in with Idun.
***
“I see.”
As he tasted the bitter taste, Idun quietly set down his teacup.
As always, Idun spent tonight teaching herbal medicine to the Viscountess. The only remaining task was to return to his room and rest, but the Viscountess stood up, saying she had something to say, and made him sit back down.
With a warm cup of tea, the Countess shared the news that the director would be leaving the castle tomorrow and that a physician had been appointed.
The Countess’s voice, conveying the news, was melancholy and slow, but to Eden, it was nothing less than delightful news.
Despite suppressing a red snake with vitality, Eden had recently become somewhat anxious as the princess seemed to show interest in him.
“Now that a physician has been appointed, I will also make preparations as soon as possible.”
“…I feel I have received a lot of help from you, I’m sorry it has come to this.”
The elderly woman took off her glasses she was wearing.
“No, Madam. It is I who should apologize for not meeting your expectations.”
“You…”
The Countess couldn’t bring herself to continue speaking and bit her lip.
Eden patiently waited for the Countess’s words and before long, she continued.
“What exactly did you do to cure the princess? Can’t you explain it clearly? At least, tell me what her illness was, and I will try to persuade the princess.”
The always dignified Countess, ignoring etiquette, looked into Eden’s eyes as she spoke.
‘…It makes me feel even more sorry for her coming out like this.’
Her gaze seemed very sincere and desperate but Eden had no intention of meeting her expectations.
The biggest cause that made the princess fall was a curse.
The moment he uttered that the princess fell due to a curse, not only this small Umstendel castle but the entire empire would be thrown into chaos.
‘If she asks me about the curse…’
Without revealing the power of immortality, he couldn’t answer how he had resolved the curse.
But he also couldn’t reveal the power of immortality. Because if the empire or other powerful individuals found out about the power of immortality, they wouldn’t leave those who possessed it alone.
In that case, Eden’s goal of accumulating good deeds to break the curse of blood would forever fail. Getting scolded by Adrien would be an added bonus.
“It’s okay. I want to go back to my hometown and live helping others, just as I have been until now.”
“…Is that so?”
The Countess stared at Eden for a long time. Contrary to her words, there was still lingering regret in her eyes. Seeing that gaze, Eden could only give a faint smile.
A considerable silence passed, and the Countess opened her mouth again.
“Thank you for everything. Apothecary.”
Finishing her words, the Countess showed a truly lonely smile.
***
“We finally arrived.”
Adrien murmured as she tied up her messy hair. In her eyes, there was a castle that looked like it could collapse any moment.
“By the way, why are you living in a ruin like this?”
I can’t possibly know who that guy is.
Adrian muttered as he walked towards the castle gate.
