Chapter 33: CH33: Threads of the Invisible Web
Back at the rebellion's headquarters, the search for the council—the hidden network of allies supporting Evil Morty—was in full swing. Morty stood at the center of the war room, surrounded by screens filled with data feeds, dimensional maps, and energy readings. He felt the weight of the multiverse pressing down on his shoulders like never before. They were closer than ever to exposing the conspiracy that threatened to tear everything apart, but the path ahead was still murky, filled with shadows and uncertainty.
Rick was hunched over a console, typing furiously as he ran simulations and traced energy spikes through the most unstable regions of the multiverse. His expression was focused, intense, the usual sarcasm and snark absent as he poured all of his genius into unearthing the hidden threads of Evil Morty's operation.
Summer, standing at Morty's side, had her arms crossed, her eyes fixed on the same data. She was keyed up, ready for action, her face a mask of determination. Morty knew that look well—it was the same one he'd seen on her face when they'd lost Beth, the same look that said she wouldn't stop until they had answers.
"Alright," Rick said, finally stepping back from the console with a frustrated sigh. "We've got temporal anomalies, dimensional echoes, and an energy signature that doesn't match anything we've seen before. Whatever this council is, they're good at covering their tracks."
Morty rubbed his chin, his brow furrowed as he studied the data. "They're not just hiding—they're deliberately misdirecting us. Every lead we follow seems to lead to a dead end or a trap set to throw us off course."
Summer nodded, her jaw clenched. "Evil Morty's partners have to be powerful to manipulate the multiverse like this. They're not just tagging along; they're orchestrating some of these disruptions themselves."
Morty's mind was racing. They were dealing with enemies who could manipulate timelines and dimensions with the same ease that Rick hacked into alien tech. Whoever these people were, they weren't amateurs—they were masters of their craft. But that meant they were also leaving behind a trail, no matter how small.
"There has to be a pattern," Morty said, almost to himself. "A way to connect these anomalies to the council's movements. If we can figure out how they're coordinating, maybe we can predict where they'll strike next."
Rick shot Morty a sideways glance, a hint of pride flickering in his eyes. "You're not wrong, Morty. If they're hiding this well, they have to have some kind of central hub, a place where they meet, where they plan. No one operates on this scale without a base of operations."
Morty's eyes lit up with realization. "Like a nexus point—a stable dimension that they control completely, where they can manipulate the flow of information and movement in and out."
Rick nodded, his fingers already flying across the console. "Exactly. A pocket dimension, off the grid, hidden from standard multiversal scans. They'd use it to coordinate their activities, make sure no one's watching when they make their moves."
Summer leaned forward, her eyes narrowing at the screen. "How do we find it? If it's off the grid, there won't be any obvious trails leading to it."
Rick smirked, his hands moving faster than ever. "We don't look for it directly. We look for what it's affecting—the dimensions closest to its influence. If this pocket dimension exists, it'll have a gravitational pull of sorts, disrupting the natural flow of time and energy in nearby realities. We track those distortions, and we'll find our hidden base."
Morty felt a surge of hope. For the first time in weeks, they had a tangible lead, a way to rip back the veil on the conspiracy that had been haunting them from the shadows.
As Rick's program crunched the data, highlighting regions of the multiverse with high levels of distortion, Morty's eyes landed on one particular sector—a cluster of dimensions that had all experienced minor disruptions at almost the exact same time.
"Look at that," Morty said, pointing at the screen. "That sector—it's been unstable for weeks. Every time we get close, the anomalies seem to shift, like they're reacting to us."
Rick grinned, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "That's it, Morty. That's our target. They're hiding in plain sight, using the instability as a smokescreen to keep us from getting too close."
Summer grabbed her gear, her expression fierce. "So what's the plan? We can't just waltz into a pocket dimension controlled by the multiverse's most dangerous players."
Morty nodded, a thoughtful look crossing his face. "We'll need a small team—just the three of us. We go in fast, get eyes on the ground, and gather as much intel as we can before they realize we're there. If we're lucky, we'll find a way to confirm their identities and track down their operations."
Rick adjusted his portal gun, fine-tuning it to lock onto the pocket dimension's energy signature. "I'll handle the dimensional stability—make sure we don't get trapped in there if things go south. But let's be clear, Morty: we're walking into the lion's den. If these guys are as powerful as we think, they'll have countermeasures waiting for anyone who tries to breach their base."
Morty took a deep breath, his jaw set in determination. "I know, Rick. But we can't keep fighting blind. We need to know who we're up against if we're going to have any chance of stopping Evil Morty's plan."
Summer loaded her rifle, a hint of a grin on her face. "Let's do this. Time to crash their little party."
The portal gun hummed to life, a green vortex swirling open before them, leading to the unknown dimension where they hoped to find answers. Morty's heart pounded in his chest, a mix of fear and determination coursing through him. He knew they were walking into a trap, knew that the council was waiting for them on the other side. But he also knew that they couldn't turn back now.
"Stay sharp," Rick said, his voice uncharacteristically serious. "We go in, get what we need, and get out. No heroics, no last stands. We're not dying for this—at least, not today."
Morty gave a grim nod, gripping his weapon tightly as he stepped through the portal, Rick and Summer right behind him. As the world around them shifted and morphed into the unfamiliar landscape of the hidden dimension, Morty felt a cold sense of dread settle in his gut.
They had crossed into enemy territory. And there, at the center of this mysterious nexus, he knew they were closer than ever to unmasking the council that had been orchestrating the chaos.
The landscape of the pocket dimension was unlike anything Morty had ever seen. It was a place where reality seemed to fold in on itself, where the sky was fractured into shifting planes of light and shadow, and the ground beneath their feet shimmered with a dull, metallic sheen. It was as if the entire dimension was in a state of flux, constantly reshaping itself to mask its true form.
"Okay, this place gives me the creeps," Summer muttered, her eyes darting around as she took in the surreal environment.
"Focus, Summer," Rick said, his voice low but steady. "We're in the right place. The readings are off the charts. Someone's definitely been using this place as a base of operations."
Morty's eyes scanned the shifting landscape, looking for any sign of movement, any clue that would lead them to the council. But all he could see were the distortions—flickers of light and shadow that seemed to ripple across the ground and sky, hiding whatever lay beyond.
Then, out of the corner of his eye, Morty saw it—a flash of movement, a silhouette in the distance. He turned, raising his blaster, and caught a glimpse of figures standing at the edge of the dimensional rift, their faces obscured by the swirling shadows.
"Rick," Morty said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I think we've found them."
The figures were watching them, motionless, their forms flickering in and out of focus as if the dimension itself was trying to conceal them. Morty's grip tightened on his weapon, his heart pounding as he realized that they were not just dealing with ordinary beings. These were entities who knew how to manipulate reality itself, who had bent this dimension to their will.
"Welcome," a voice echoed through the distorted landscape, smooth and calm, dripping with a confidence that sent chills down Morty's spine. "We've been expecting you."
Morty's stomach dropped as he realized that they had walked straight into a trap, that the council had known they were coming all along. The figures at the edge of the rift began to step forward, and though Morty couldn't make out their faces, he felt their presence like a suffocating weight pressing down on him.
Rick's eyes narrowed, his hand tightening around his portal gun. "This just got a whole lot more interesting," he muttered, a dangerous grin spreading across his face.
Morty swallowed hard, steeling himself for what was to come. They were standing in the heart of the enemy's lair, surrounded by the most powerful adversaries they'd ever faced. The council was no longer just a rumor, no longer a shadowy threat lurking in the background.
They were real. And they were watching.
Morty knew that whatever happened next would change everything.
