Chapter 29: CH29: Regroup and Rally
The rebellion's base was buzzing with activity. The quiet, reflective moments of the previous days had dissolved into a flurry of movement as news spread of the outer team's disappearance near the Shattered Realms. Morty moved through the command center with a sense of urgency, his eyes darting between the holographic map of the multiverse and the worried faces of their allies.
They had taken a hit, losing contact with one of their most experienced squads, and the fear of what that could mean was settling into the bones of everyone in the base. Morty knew they couldn't afford to waste any more time. They had to act fast, gather their forces, and prepare for what was coming. Evil Morty was out there, and every second they lost put the multiverse at greater risk.
Rick was at his workstation, furiously modifying a device he'd pulled from the depths of his cluttered workbench. His face was set in that familiar expression of gruff determination, though Morty could see the lines of fatigue etched deeper than ever before. Beside him, Summer was coordinating with their team leaders, her voice sharp and decisive as she issued orders.
"All right, listen up!" Morty called, raising his voice to cut through the noise. The command room went silent, dozens of eyes turning to him. "We've lost contact with the outer team near the Shattered Realms. We're not going to wait around to see what happened to them. We're regrouping and sending a scouting party to assess the situation. I need everyone ready to move out in thirty minutes."
A murmur of agreement rippled through the room, and the team members scattered to prepare. Morty felt the weight of their trust and expectation settle on his shoulders. He wasn't just following orders anymore—he was giving them. He was leading.
Rick straightened up, wiping his hands on his coat, and gave Morty a nod of approval. "Not bad, Morty. You're finally sounding like someone who knows what he's doing."
Morty gave a small, humorless smile. "I've had a good teacher. Even if he's a grumpy old man who pretends not to care."
Rick snorted but didn't deny it. Instead, he held up the device he'd been working on. It was sleek, about the size of a small tablet, with wires and circuits exposed. "This little beauty should help us stabilize any dimensional rifts we encounter out there. The Shattered Realms are volatile as hell, so we'll need every bit of tech we can get our hands on."
Summer joined them, her rifle strapped to her back, a serious look on her face. "Team Alpha's ready to roll whenever you give the word, Morty. We're taking a full squad, right?"
"Yeah," Morty said, nodding. "We need to go in strong. We don't know what we're walking into, and if Evil Morty's got his hands in this, we can't afford to hold back."
He glanced back at the map, his eyes lingering on the blinking red markers that represented the unstable areas of the Shattered Realms. The reports from the outer team had mentioned growing anomalies—tears in reality that were expanding faster than they should have been. Morty couldn't shake the feeling that this was no coincidence. Evil Morty was up to something, and whatever it was, it was dangerous.
"Alright, team!" Morty called out, his voice echoing through the command center. "Move out in five! Rick, Summer, you're with me. Let's show Evil Morty what happens when he messes with us."
The portal to the Shattered Realms opened with a sickly green flash, and Morty, Rick, Summer, and the Alpha squad stepped through onto a landscape that seemed to defy logic. The ground beneath their feet was fractured, floating in massive chunks that shifted and drifted through the air. The sky above them was a swirling mass of colors, like a broken kaleidoscope, flashing between shades of green, violet, and black.
Morty's skin prickled with the sensation of the multiversal energy in the air. The Shattered Realms were a place where reality itself was unstable, where the rules of physics bent and twisted without warning. It was dangerous territory, even for experienced dimension hoppers like them.
"Everyone stay close and keep your scanners active," Morty ordered, his voice steady despite the chaotic environment around them. "We need to locate the outer team's last known position and figure out what's going on here."
Rick was already tinkering with the stabilization device, adjusting its settings to account for the dimensional instability. "These readings are off the charts, Morty," he said, squinting at the data. "Something's been tampering with the fabric of reality here. This isn't just a natural fracture—it's been amplified by something. Or someone."
"Evil Morty," Summer said, her jaw tight. "He's the only one with enough power and tech to do something like this."
Morty's grip tightened on his blaster. "If he's here, we'll deal with him. We've beaten him back before; we can do it again."
The team moved cautiously through the floating landscape, their eyes scanning for any sign of movement. The silence was unnerving, punctuated only by the occasional crackle of energy from the shifting ground beneath their feet. Morty's mind raced, running through every possible scenario. What had happened to the outer team? Were they still alive, or had they been caught in one of Evil Morty's traps?
Suddenly, Rick's device beeped loudly, and he stopped in his tracks, staring at the readings with wide eyes. "Oh, you've got to be kidding me," he muttered, a note of genuine concern creeping into his voice.
"What is it, Rick?" Morty asked, his heart pounding.
Rick looked up, his expression grim. "This isn't just a localized anomaly, Morty. It's a full-scale dimensional convergence. Multiple timelines are overlapping and merging into each other right here. If we don't stabilize this fast, the whole region could collapse into a singularity."
Morty's blood ran cold. A singularity—a point where all realities collapsed into one. If that happened, it wouldn't just be the Shattered Realms that were affected; it could destabilize the entire multiverse.
"Alright, everyone!" Morty shouted, turning to the team. "We need to set up a perimeter around this area. Rick, get that stabilization device ready. We're not letting this place turn into a black hole."
Summer pulled out her rifle, her eyes scanning the horizon. "I've got movement, Morty. Six o'clock."
Morty turned, raising his blaster just as figures emerged from the chaotic landscape. It was the outer team—or what was left of them. They looked battered, their armor scorched and torn, but they were alive. Relief washed over Morty, but it was short-lived as he noticed the fear in their eyes.
"Morty!" one of the scouts called out, his voice hoarse with panic. "We need to get out of here! It's not safe—he's coming!"
"Who's coming?" Morty demanded, even though he already knew the answer.
Before the scout could respond, a low, resonant hum filled the air, and the sky above them seemed to tear open, a massive rift splitting reality itself. The energy pouring out of the rift crackled with an unnatural green light, and Morty's heart sank as he saw the figure stepping through.
Evil Morty.
He looked different now, more powerful, more focused. His eyes glowed with the same unsettling energy that pulsed through the rift, and there was a cold smile on his face—a smile that said he had been expecting them.
"Well, well," Evil Morty said, his voice echoing across the fractured landscape. "I was wondering when you'd show up. I have to say, Morty, I'm almost disappointed. You brought your little rebellion, but you didn't bring nearly enough to stop me."
Morty's pulse quickened, his mind racing as he faced his darker counterpart. "What are you doing here, Evil Morty? What do you want?"
Evil Morty's smile widened, his gaze shifting to the dimensional rift above them. "What I want, Morty, is to finally end this charade. To tear down the last remnants of these broken realities and rebuild the multiverse in my own image. I thought you might try to stop me, but honestly, it's more fun this way."
Morty raised his blaster, his eyes locked on Evil Morty's. "We're not letting you destroy the multiverse. Not this time."
Evil Morty laughed, a cold, mocking sound. "You still think you can stop me? Morty, you've already lost. You just don't know it yet."
Rick moved forward, his eyes blazing with anger. "Yeah? Well, we've got a little surprise for you, you arrogant piece of crap. You want to play with the multiverse? Let's see how you handle this!"
He activated the stabilization device, and a surge of energy shot through the ground, spreading out in a wave that seemed to pull the fractured pieces of reality back into alignment. The rift above them flickered, the green light dimming as the dimensional instability began to stabilize.
For a moment, Morty felt hope flare in his chest. They were actually doing it. They were holding back the chaos.
But then Evil Morty's eyes narrowed, and he reached out, his hand glowing with the same sickly green energy. With a flick of his wrist, he twisted the stabilizing field, warping it into something unrecognizable. The energy that Rick's device had emitted turned back on itself, bending and twisting as if it were obeying Evil Morty's will. The ground beneath them trembled violently, and the rift above flared to life again, growing wider and more unstable.
Morty's heart sank as he watched the stabilizing effect unravel in front of his eyes. It was like trying to hold back a tidal wave with a piece of string—completely and utterly futile. Evil Morty wasn't just undoing their work; he was amplifying the chaos, turning it into a weapon.
"I told you, Morty," Evil Morty said, his voice carrying a sinister calm. "This isn't a game you can win. You're out of your depth. The multiverse bends to my will now, not yours."
Rick's eyes widened in shock and frustration. "No! Damn it!" he shouted, frantically working to recalibrate the device, but it was too late. The stabilizer was short-circuiting, sparks flying as it overloaded under the strain of Evil Morty's manipulation.
Summer took a step forward, aiming her rifle directly at Evil Morty, her face a mask of rage. "We're not letting you do this! You hear me? I don't care how powerful you think you are!"
Evil Morty barely glanced in her direction, and with a casual wave of his hand, a shockwave of energy erupted from him, sending Summer flying backward. She hit the ground hard, her rifle skidding across the fractured terrain. Morty rushed to her side, his heart pounding as he checked to see if she was okay.
"Summer!" Morty called, shaking her gently. She groaned and opened her eyes, looking up at him with a mix of pain and defiance.
"I'm fine," she muttered, pushing herself up despite the tremor in her hands. "I'm not giving up that easy."
Morty helped her to her feet, his gaze snapping back to Evil Morty, who was standing there with that infuriatingly calm expression. The rebellion forces around them were faltering, unsure of how to respond to an enemy who could bend the rules of reality itself. The tide of the battle was turning against them, and Morty knew that they needed a new plan—and fast.
Rick, his face twisted with rage and desperation, pulled out his portal gun and pointed it directly at the ground beneath Evil Morty's feet. He fired, opening a swirling green vortex that tore through the landscape. But Evil Morty didn't even flinch. He merely stepped over the portal as if it were nothing more than a puddle in his path.
"You really think you can trick me with parlor tricks, Rick?" Evil Morty taunted. "You forget, I've learned everything I know from you. Every trick, every tactic. I'm beyond what you could ever become."
Morty's eyes narrowed, and he felt something snap inside him—a mixture of rage, determination, and sheer exhaustion from the years of struggling against his darker counterpart. He wasn't going to let this twisted version of himself tear apart everything they had fought to protect.
"No more games, Evil Morty," Morty said, stepping forward, his voice steady and unwavering. "You want to rebuild the multiverse in your image? You want to tear everything down just because you can? Then you'll have to go through us first. Through me."
For the first time, Morty saw a flicker of something in Evil Morty's eyes—annoyance, perhaps, or maybe even respect. It was gone as quickly as it appeared, replaced by that same cold smile.
"You're bold, I'll give you that," Evil Morty said, his tone mocking. "But boldness isn't going to save you. You've lost too much, Morty. You and your pathetic rebellion—you're nothing but relics of a multiverse that doesn't exist anymore."
Morty took a deep breath, steadying his thoughts. He wasn't that same scared kid who used to follow Rick blindly through one chaotic adventure after another. He had grown, evolved, and learned the hard way that sometimes, you had to make impossible choices to protect the ones you loved.
"Maybe we are relics," Morty said quietly. "But we're still here. We're still fighting. And we're not giving up on this multiverse, no matter what you throw at us."
Evil Morty's expression darkened, his smile fading into a look of pure, cold determination. "Then let's see how long you can last."
Without another word, he raised his hand, and the ground beneath them erupted into chaos. Cracks split through the floating landscape, energy tearing at the seams of reality as dimensions twisted and overlapped, creating a maelstrom of unstable timelines. The air was filled with a roar like a thousand overlapping realities crashing into each other.
Rick stumbled back, barely managing to keep his footing as the ground shifted beneath him. "Morty, this whole place is coming apart!" he shouted over the din. "We need to get out of here, now!"
"No!" Morty yelled, his eyes locked on Evil Morty. "If we run now, we'll never get another chance to stop him! We need to hold the line!"
Summer, bruised but not beaten, stood beside him, her rifle aimed at Evil Morty. "We've got your back, Morty. Whatever it takes, we're in this with you."
Evil Morty's smile returned, more sinister than ever. "So be it."
He raised both hands, and the rift above them exploded outward, engulfing the sky in a storm of raw multiversal energy. The ground shook violently, and Morty could feel the pull of different realities, each one vying to dominate the space around them. It was as if the very fabric of the multiverse was being shredded apart, and they were standing in the eye of the storm.
Morty's mind raced. He couldn't rely on brute force alone—they needed a way to neutralize Evil Morty's control over the Nexus Point. His eyes darted to Rick, who was furiously working on his malfunctioning stabilizer.
"Rick, we need a plan!" Morty shouted, struggling to keep his balance on the shifting ground.
Rick looked up, sweat beading on his forehead, his face a mask of concentration. "I've got one shot, Morty! One shot to redirect the Nexus Point's energy back into itself! It's risky, but it might just collapse this whole damn pocket of reality around Evil Morty!"
Morty felt a surge of hope. "Do it!"
Rick nodded, his fingers flying over the device as he rerouted the circuits, amplifying the stabilizer's output to channel directly into the Nexus Point. The device whirred to life, emitting a high-pitched tone that seemed to resonate with the energy tearing through the air.
"Everyone, get ready!" Rick yelled, his voice laced with urgency. "This is gonna get messy!"
As the stabilizer activated, a beam of energy shot out, piercing through the rift above them and striking the Nexus Point directly. For a moment, the energy around them flickered, hesitating, as if the multiverse itself was trying to decide which way to tip the balance.
Evil Morty's eyes widened, just for a second, and Morty saw the crack in his calm demeanor.
"No!" Evil Morty roared, his voice echoing like thunder. He reached out, trying to wrest control of the Nexus Point back from Rick's stabilizer, but it was too late.
The stabilizer's energy surged, folding the dimensional rift inward, the chaos of the Shattered Realms collapsing back into itself. The storm of energy that had threatened to tear apart the multiverse suddenly imploded, drawing everything back toward the Nexus Point in a flash of blinding light.
Morty, Rick, and Summer were thrown to the ground by the force of the implosion, the world around them spinning as reality began to stabilize. The swirling colors of the sky dimmed, the fractured landscape slowly piecing itself back together.
And then, just as suddenly as it had started, the chaos was gone.
Morty looked up, blinking against the light, and saw that Evil Morty was gone. The rift had closed, the instability had faded, and for the first time in what felt like an eternity, the Shattered Realms were silent.
"Did we… did we do it?" Summer asked, her voice hoarse with exhaustion.
Rick pushed himself to his feet, his face still drawn but showing the faintest hint of a grin. "We did it, Morty. We actually did it."
Morty stood slowly, the weight of the battle settling into his bones. They had won this round, but the victory felt hollow. Evil Morty had escaped, slipping through the cracks of the collapsing dimensions like smoke. He was still out there, somewhere, planning his next move.
But for now, they had bought the multiverse a little more time.
Morty turned to Rick and Summer, his voice tired but filled with determination. "This isn't over. Not by a long shot. But at least we're still here. And as long as we're still standing, we're going to keep fighting."
Rick nodded, his smirk turning into a weary smile. "Damn right, Morty. We're not giving up that easily."
And with that, the rebellion regrouped, ready to face whatever the multiverse had in store for them next.
