Chapter 5: Chapter 5- Test Of Wits 2
In a white room were ten figures, Challengers prepared for the second test, or at least seemed ready for the second test.
Paxton was amongst this number, at the edge of the area just like the others, his thoughts reeling in.
'There are actually some familiar faces here…' He thought to himself, but that was one of the least problems he had at the moment.
'Ten people gathered, and two of them already look like killers….this will be troublesome'.
In the middle was an orb that projected a screen on the wall opposite to them, causing the ten people gathered to turn their attention to the screen.
It remained silent for a while before a series of words were typed onto it.
[WELCOME CHALLENGERS! TO THE TEST OF WITS! TEN OF YOU SHALL BE PLACED IN A HOUSE WHERE YOU ARE TO FIGURE OUT YOUR KILLER!]
It read, then continued.
[TO GET THE BEST EXPERIENCE! YOU WILL BE GIVEN TEN MINUTES TO CONVERSE AND LEARN ABOUT EACH OTHER. AFTER WHICH, YOU WILL BE GIVEN YOUR TASKS AND THE TEST SHALL BEGIN]
[THIS IS YOUR MOMENT TO PROVE TO YOUR TEAMMATES THAT YOU ARE NOT A KILLER! (*^^*) DO WELL TO PROVE YOUR WORTH]
'What?' Paxton thought as the screen suddenly vanished with the end of the statement.
'It's almost like the Server is asking us to prove ourselves to obtain the abilities….how absurd'.
Just then, a loud clap echoed in the room, causing the people gathered to turn towards the direction of its source.
A man with princely features, black hair and red eyes walked up to the middle of it, a grin on his face.
"Hello there, everyone. Since you all have decided not to step up, I'll bring it upon myself to do that and start the conversation. I hope we're all good with that?"
There was no response to that, in fact, Paxton wasn't exactly sure if it needed one.
'These are people that just experienced a hell of a death scene in that place….perhaps they were too scared to fight back since they saw the creature slaughter others like….. cattle, but they must have second thoughts about this decision'.
Amongst the group was the Burly man from before, Goliath Doth and the girl in the black tracksuit. She had silver hair tied to a ponytail and silver eyes that could naturally reflect the objects she gazed at.
There was a middle-aged man in a suit, two sisters who seemed like twins, and two strange-looking men, one in a hoody and the other in a trench coat.
What was strange about them wasn't their clothing but their expressions, and Paxton got a bad feeling about the two.
The last person was a boy, a familiar-looking one too.
The boy had black hair and eyes and a round pair of glasses sat perfectly on the bridge of his nose.
He had been staring at Paxton since they got to the room, and perhaps maybe even before that.
"Why should we let you take charge, I'm the oldest". The middle-aged man spoke up with a distasteful tone in his voice.
He was bald at the top with side hair and a grumpy expression. Out of them all, he found this situation particularly annoying but decided to go for the second test, merely because he thought it would give him more profit.
"Hah geez, Mister…."
"Jonn Scoon, call me Mister Jonn"
"Hah…Mister Jonn. If you wish to take charge then please, by all means, do so".
Jonn, the middle-aged man, remained in his position for a moment before clicking his tongue and resting on the wall.
"You're doing a great job already. Keep it up".
With that, the young adult in the centre looked away.
"Yes, if there's no other opinion, I'll get straight to it. Let's start with names and why our life history came here".
"What?"
"Why would we tell you something like that?"
It was the sisters who seemed to protest while the others remained silent.
Paxton scratched the back of his head.
'Hah….this is a great opportunity'.
"It's so we can ensure that we don't have a natural killer amongst us" he replied, gaining their attention.
"If we tell each other what we are in the real world, then we can be at ease with each other. Right now, everyone is on edge because of the last test and the rules of this one…..or is there another reason?"
"Oh, not at all," the young man replied with a wild smile, as he nodded his head.
'Liar….I can tell right away that you're the type of person that hates to be upstaged…'
An image of Rolyn flashed in his head and a scowl formed across his face.
"But we would very much lie about it. Why do that?" This time it was the boy in the glasses, who interjected. "Many of us here wouldn't want to reveal that kind of information".
"We can just make a pact on it" Goliath replied next, his hand in the air.
"A pact?" The tracksuite girl asked. "Like protection of our information once we get out of there and telling the truth at all times in this place?"
"Yes, something like that and if you want us to go anywhere…I'll suggest you go first, Mister I want to be the leader".
The man chuckled in response to Goliath and clapped his hands as he began.
"Alright then. I am Kenhi Motto, and I recently just moved into Gametopia. I heard it was the city where all your dreams came true and found my way here….I guess it was true.
I'm currently unemployed and spend my days in the game centres and hanging out with my new friends".
A sudden silence followed when Goliath chuckled. "That's it?"
"Well…what else is there? I have no criminal record, and I wouldn't hurt a fly if it bit me".
The whole room seemed to hum in disappointment.
"I'll go next then," Goliath said. "I'm Goliath Doth…..a former bodyweight champion but recently unemployed. I'm physically capable of many things, but my career doesn't let me kill, so here we are".
"A former body weight champion? No wonder I didn't know you. I know most athletes, but damn…you must be strong," Kenhi said with a chuckle.
"So I'm told".
"Then, can the lady?" Kenhi turned towards the tracksuit girl, their attention turning towards her as well.
"I'm Dollina Olton"–" OLTON?!!"
She was cut off by the two girls, and practically all the other males' surprised gaze focused on her.
'Oh, the Olton….one of the founders of gametopia, otherwise known as the Developers. There is a family of seven that has served as the foundation of our city for years…..and they have a high number of legendary and mythic players when compared to your average.
Paxton clicked his tongue. 'I dislike people in the high class'.
The tracksuit girl smiled wryly before she continued. "Although I have been trained for this all my life, I tend to get shy when it comes down to it, but I promise I'll be helpful and adapt to your rules and decisions".
Kenhi smirked, a satisfied grin on his face as he turned to the two shady figures.
"Yes, and you two, if you may?" He asked.
They remained silent for a moment until the man in the trench coat spoke up first.
"I'm Ferralo Tony and I work at a digital company for making games".
"Oh?! Which is it?" Kenhi asked in excitement, but Tony remained silent while the other introduced himself.
"While I'm Zan Zodich, just a game tester".
"Wow….you both have my dream jobs, you know…well, that was until I realized I could become a player".
Kenhi laughed out loud as he turned to the next figure.
"I'm Bryan Chen, a high school senior. I usually just do hobbies while I'm not studying. I play the games my dad brings in from his work and I'm a vegetarian".
Kenhi nodded in satisfaction. "Being a vegetarian must be good right now. Thanks to that; we now know you don't like slaughtering animals…..and are most likely incapable of killing".
Then, he turned to the sisters.
One of them, the one that seemed bolder, spoke out first.
"I'm Risa Lanloft and my younger sister, Naomi Lanloft. I'm a sophomore and she's a freshman at the community university. Our hobbies are usually shopping and hanging out with friends….sometimes night partying, but we've never gotten into a fight before".
Kenhi nodded. "True, true. An upholder of non-violence would definitely not be capable of killing anyone….so then". He turned towards the middle-aged man, but he seemed to ignore their stare until he started.
"I've told you my name already. What more do you need? Tsk, kids these days".
Kenhi sighed before turning to Paxton, his smile widening.
"You're even prettier than me and that sort of makes me jealous. So? Yellow-haired?"
'What a bunch of weirdos'. Paxton thought as he folded his hands while a smile formed on his lips.
"I'm Zachary Aly, a senior at a high school as well though I was kicked out from school.
I like to experience life as it is so I didn't have a good reputation while I was at school. Had a bit of an issue with the Security Agents you see, and also, I've never thought of killing before….but I do now".
A tense silence remained after his introduction ended, their gazes fixed on him.
Kenhi's smile seemed to have dropped by a bit, but he was able to somehow manage to leave it there.
He was about to speak up again when the sound of the server broke through the silence.
[TIME IS UP! TIME TO DISTRIBUTE YOUR TASKS. A BREAKDOWN OF YOUR TASKS AND OTHER INFORMATION WILL BE DOWNLOADED IN YOUR BRAIN]
After a few moments, the group of ten felt a sudden rush of information in their head in the form of colours and written descriptions.
It felt like an overload of information like when you've read for too long but continue to do so.
It lasted for a minute until it finally set in.
Paxton lowered his head, a smirk on his face at the colour that was showcased in his brain.
'Hah…..lucky'.
