Chapter 9: 9. Whispers at Namsan Tower
I slid into the passenger seat, my heart racing as the door clicked shut behind me. Before I could even settle in, Mingyu leaned over, reaching for the seatbelt. My breath caught as his face came so close, his scent filling the space between us. He glanced sideways, eyes glinting with that familiar mischief.
"Is this distance okay," he murmured, his voice low and teasing, "or... do you want to decrease it a little more?"
My brain went into overdrive. I could practically feel his lips a whisper away, like all I had to do was lean in. Could he just...? My thoughts spiraled, picturing him closing the gap, his lips brushing against mine, his hand moving to the back of my neck as he—
"Breathe, Pia," he said, clicking the seatbelt into place. I blinked, realizing I'd been holding my breath, staring at him with what was probably the dumbest expression imaginable.
He leaned back into his seat, casually rolling up his sleeves. My eyes couldn't help but follow, tracing the lines of his forearm as the veins stood out in a way that sent a jolt through me. His hand slid onto the gearshift, fingers strong and capable, as he shot me a lazy, knowing smile.
"Better buckle up," he said smoothly, starting the car. "I'd hate for you to fall... too fast."
As we pulled onto the road, I couldn't resist asking, "So, where exactly are we going?"
He grinned, keeping his eyes on the road. "Namsan Tower," he replied casually, as if it were no big deal. "Thought you might want to see Seoul from the top at night. Best view in the city."
I felt a thrill shoot through me, mixed with just a hint of dread. "Mingyu," I said, trying to keep my tone serious, "you're a public figure. What if one of your fans sees us? Tomorrow's headlines will be all about you and some mysterious girl sneaking around at midnight."
Without missing a beat, he reached into the glove compartment and pulled out a hoodie, a pair of glasses, and a black mask. He slid the glasses on, then slipped the hoodie over his head, adjusting it until his face was almost entirely hidden. He turned to me, only his eyes visible, sparkling with amusement. "Think this'll do?" he asked with a wink.
I couldn't help but laugh. "If I didn't know better, even I wouldn't recognize you," I admitted, shaking my head.
He leaned back in his seat, his voice dropping a little. "Good," he said, his gaze flicking to mine. "That way, I get to keep you all to myself tonight. No cameras. No interruptions. Just... us."
My cheeks felt hot, and I tried to brush it off. "You really thought of everything, huh?"
His eyes twinkled with that playful edge as he shifted gears and pulled onto the highway, heading towards Namsan Tower. "What can I say?" he murmured, his hand resting just a little closer to mine. "I always go all out when it's something—or someone—I want."
In my mind, his words echoed over and over. Oh, he wants me. Did I hear that right? My heart hammered with every step we took up the stairs, his hand resting firmly on my shoulder, guiding me. I couldn't believe it; he'd just finished a concert, and here he was, hauling me up to the top of Namsan Tower as if he had all the energy in the world.
"Aren't you tired?" I asked, genuinely concerned, glancing up at him.
He flashed that playful smirk. "I've got plenty of stamina left," he murmured, his tone making me swallow hard. "You'll find out soon enough."
I tried to ignore the flutter in my stomach, focusing on the cool night air as we climbed. Finally, we reached the top, and the city lay sprawled out beneath us, twinkling like a sea of stars. The lights of Seoul stretched as far as the eye could see, and I couldn't help but feel the magic of the moment.
"So," he asked, breaking the silence, "what are your plans for tomorrow?"
I bit my lip, a bit hesitant. He's an idol, I reminded myself. He probably has a packed schedule. This is just a fleeting moment, right? "I, uh... I'm going to a cold noodle shop with Kirti," I answered, shrugging, trying to keep it casual.
Without warning, he leaned in, his face so close that I could feel his breath against my skin, his lips hovering dangerously close to mine. I froze, my heart racing, and my eyes fluttered shut instinctively. Just when I thought he might actually kiss me, he pulled back, laughing, his voice full of teasing.
"You actually closed your eyes?" he chuckled, his gaze gleaming with amusement. "Were you expecting something, Pia?"
I flushed, opening my mouth to protest, to come up with any sort of excuse. "I didn't mean to—I wasn't expecting—"
But before I could finish, his hands gently cupped my face, tilting it up as his thumbs traced along my cheekbones. His eyes softened, that playful edge giving way to something deeper. And then he leaned in, closing the gap between us, his lips capturing mine in a kiss that was every bit as intense as I'd imagined. His hands held me close, his fingers tracing along my jawline, and for a few endless seconds, the world around us melted away.
When he pulled back, he rested his forehead against mine, his voice low and soft. "I'm... curious about you, Pia," he whispered, his gaze flicking to my lips, then back to my eyes. "And I don't think one night is going to be enough."
I felt like I was in a dream, standing there on top of the world with Mingyu. The kiss still lingered on my lips, and every time I looked at him, I felt that tug between us grow stronger. We stood like that for a few moments, his forehead resting against mine, his eyes half-lidded as he watched me with that magnetic gaze.
"You know," he murmured, brushing a thumb along my cheek, "I don't usually get to sneak out after a concert, and I definitely don't get to do this." He let his fingers trail down to my hand, giving it a light squeeze. "But you... you make it feel easy."
The warmth of his hand holding mine sent a thrill through me. "Well, I guess I should feel special then," I teased, trying to keep my voice steady despite the way he was looking at me."Yeah," he replied softly, his eyes intense, "maybe you should."He held my hand as we walked down from the tower, his fingers interlacing with mine, and every small brush of our shoulders sent another spark shooting through me. We laughed softly, stealing glances as we made our way back to the car. When we got in, he glanced over at me, a sly smile tugging at his lips as he started the engine.
The ride was filled with this unspoken tension, the city lights flashing by as he drove us through the night. His hand rested on the gearshift, inches from my knee, and I could feel the warmth radiating from him. Every so often, I'd catch him glancing at me, a mischievous smile playing at the corner of his mouth, as if he was planning something.
"Are you nervous?" he asked, breaking the silence, his voice like velvet.I gave a small laugh, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. "No... well, maybe," I admitted, feeling my cheeks heat up. "It's not every day I get a private tour of Seoul with a superstar."Mingyu chuckled, his gaze lingering on me. "Good. I like keeping you on your toes."We reached my hotel, and he parked the car, not making a move to turn it off just yet. The silence between us grew thick, charged, as he finally looked over at me, his hand resting on the back of my seat. "Guess I should be a gentleman and walk you up, right?"I swallowed, nodding, even though my pulse was racing. "If you insist..."He held my gaze, his eyes darkening just a little as he reached over, his fingers lightly tracing my jawline. "Believe me," he murmured, "I do."We stepped out, and as we made our way to the elevator, I could feel the weight of each glance he threw my way, each soft brush of his hand as he walked beside me. When the elevator doors closed, I could feel his presence all around me. He leaned back against the wall, his eyes locked on me as the numbers ticked up, higher and higher. When the doors opened, he followed me down the hallway, stopping just a step behind me as I reached my door. For a second, I thought he might just leave it at that, say goodnight with that teasing smile. But instead, he took a step closer, his voice a soft murmur in my ear."Tonight was... fun," he said, his tone low, making my heart race. "But I think I might still be curious."
I could barely breathe as I turned to face him, and when I looked up, he was watching me intently. I felt his fingers graze mine, his thumb brushing against my hand as he leaned in, his face inches from mine.Without another word, he tilted my chin up with his fingers, capturing my lips in a kiss that was slow, almost lazy, like he had all the time in the world to explore the way we fit together. His hands found my waist, pulling me closer as I melted into him, feeling the warmth of his body against mine.
When he finally pulled back, he kept his forehead against mine, his eyes dark and filled with a heat that made my pulse quicken all over again. "Think you'll still have time for noodles tomorrow?" he whispered, his breath tickling my lips, "or... maybe we could make other plans?" I bit my lip, feeling breathless. "Guess I'll have to see where the night takes me..." With a final lingering glance, he stepped back, his hand brushing my cheek before he let go. "Goodnight, Pia. I'll be around... so don't keep me waiting."
