A Brighter Future (Kuroinu)

Volume 1 Chapter 4 - The Seven Shields Alliance

“Come to think of it, I haven’t learned much about this world yet. Can you tell me a little about it?”

“Of course. First, let’s talk about the Goddess Leliantia. She is the guardian deity of this world. After living beings were born on this land, her gaze fell upon it, and she slowly began guiding and helping humans, dwarves, elves, and orcs in establishing their civilizations while also granting us the power to combat monsters.”

“Are there only four races?”

Rhodes initially thought that the world of an alternate dimension would have a more diverse range of races, but now it seemed a bit limited.

“Of course not, but the rest are mostly evil, vile creatures similar to monsters.”

As she talked about this, Celestine’s expression turned to one of disgust, surprising Rhodes. He had always seen Celestine as gentle, kind, and very tolerant, so her showing such emotions meant that these creatures must be truly detestable.

“Let’s start with the monsters, then.”

“Black orcs? Do they have any connection to regular orcs?”

When Rhodes heard this term, he became curious.

“Yes, these black orcs are a group of orcs who haven’t established civilization and still live a primitive life, engaging in destruction and raiding, especially targeting females. Many times, these black orcs cause more trouble than monsters.”

Celestine’s eyes showed sadness, but she quickly adjusted herself. She didn’t want her emotions to affect Rhodes.

“Then there are the demonkin. No one knows how they came into existence, but they’ve also established their own kingdom. Initially, when they appeared, there were territorial conflicts with humans, orcs, and elves. However, as the situation stabilized and kingdoms were formed, they eventually signed a non-aggression treaty. So far, both sides have lived peacefully.”

“I see. When I heard about the demonkin, I was worried they might be ruthless conquerors or something, but it’s good to know that’s not the case.”

“Yes, a world without war is ideal. War is a terrible thing, not only taking lives but also destroying families and bringing nothing but sadness. You understand that, and I’m really happy that you, favored by the Goddess Leliantia, also cherish peace.”

Celestine was genuinely pleased, feeling that she wasn’t alone in caring about this.

“By the way, Rhodes, when the time comes, you should come with me to meet the Fortress Commander of the Seven Shields Alliance. After all, your existence needs to be known and understood by everyone.”

“The Seven Shields Alliance? Is it a coalition of nations?”

“Yes, it was formed in the past to combat the demonkin. Humans, dwarves, and orcs united to build it. The core of the alliance consists of seven fortresses, each of which can be considered a separate nation. They are all followers of the Goddess Leliantia, so it’s essential to get to know them.”

Listening to Celestine, Rhodes understood that it was inevitable that some people would know about his arrival due to the commotion he caused. From Celestine’s perspective, it seemed like she wanted him to have a better social network in this world to ensure he could lead a good life, much like a caring mother.

“I understand. I’ll do my best to make a good impression.”

“No need to be too nervous. They are all easygoing people. Besides, now you’re considered the messenger of Goddess Leliantia and even her offspring, so they won’t make things difficult for you.”

“But in reality, I don’t think I’m either of those. I was just reincarnated into this world by the Goddess, and she didn’t give me any specific mission. I don’t think I’m cut out to be a hero or a savior. It seems too tough for me.”

As he said these words, Rhodes felt a bit embarrassed, but Celestine had an understanding and supportive expression.

“It’s perfectly fine to feel that way because the appearance of heroes and saviors often signifies disasters and wars. If you don’t want that, it just shows that your heart doesn’t want to see such sadness. Living a peaceful and stable life is the best choice.”

Listening to Celestine’s response, Rhodes felt like he was being pampered like a child by a mother who would support any decision he made. Considering how she had been taking care of him, he had a feeling that he might end up spoiled if things continued this way.

Rhodes shook his head, dismissing the thought of becoming lazy or spoiled. After all, he had arrived in another world, and he should make the most of this opportunity to enjoy a new and wonderful life. Otherwise, he would feel like he was not living up to the favor of the Goddess Leliantia.

“I understand. You can decide on this matter; I have no objections.”

“That’s good. So let’s go meet the members of the Levantine family first. This family is known for producing outstanding warriors, and the current head of the family is General Grave, who is famous throughout the continent as a victorious general in his active service. His adopted daughter is also a member of the Goddess Leliantia Church, the leader of the Holy Knights Order, and she also serves as the guardian of me and the Sixth and Seventh Fortresses. Getting acquainted with them would be a great thing for you.”

“Is the first person I meet going to be such an impressive figure?!”

Upon hearing this background, Rhodes was somewhat astonished and even worried about how he would react when meeting such influential people.

“So don’t be nervous or afraid. Besides, they might be just as nervous as you are because, no matter what, you represent the Goddess Leliantia, and even the Levantine family, despite being a noble clan, can’t compare to you.”

“Well, I’ll do my best.”
