Chapter 15: Escape plan gone wrong.
Katy's POV
This was a huge leap. Even as I was doing it, fear gnawed at me, urging me to turn back. But there was no turning back now. Dario would soon realize I was missing. I desperately needed to talk to Tom. I couldn’t believe he’d do this to me. An Irish girl would be the last thing on his mind. I knew my Tom. Though love wasn’t the driving force, I knew he was the one I wanted to spend my life with, and Dario was making that increasingly difficult. As for my parent, their betrayal was worse than Tom's. I still find it hard to believe they will use me as a ticket out of bankruptcy.
I crept out of my room, avoiding the guards. There had to be a back exit. Dario and Sonia were downstairs in the living room. I couldn’t risk being seen. Luckily, I found one of the maids and decided to charm her into helping me.
“Hi,” I greeted with a smile. “I guess you know who I am.” She nodded and smiled back.
“Madam Veronica told us about the boss’s new fiancée. I’m sure it must be you. My name is Maria,” she said excitedly.
“Nice name, Maria. I need your help with something, and if you do, I’ll ask Dario to make you my personal maid. How does that sound?” She nodded eagerly.
“Dario has an important guest in the living room, and I don’t want to interrupt them. I need another way out to the beach. I’m feeling sick, and a walk by the water would be good for the baby,” I said, touching my stomach. She gasped and beamed.
“This way, ma’am,” she said, leading the way.
I followed her, relieved that I’d tricked the poor girl into helping me escape. Yet, I couldn’t shake the feeling of guilt. If we were caught, she’d be in trouble. She glanced back at me, and I gave her a reassuring smile.
We descended a flight of stairs into the laundry room. She opened another door, and we hurried down a corridor.
She opened another door, and we were finally outside. The wind whipped at us, and I breathed a sigh of relief. She stopped, and I held her arm.
“I can take it from here. You can go back to work. And please, don’t tell anyone where I am. I’d like to be alone for a while.”
Thankfully, she didn’t argue. She just smiled and went back inside.
Feeling nervous, I wandered around, trying to find the beach. I dodged guards, hiding whenever they looked my way. I saw Sonia boarding a plane and waited until it was out of sight before continuing.
Finally, I reached the beach where I’d first woken up. I smiled to myself, but then reality hit. How was I going to escape from this island?
The only way off was by plane or... A thought struck me. I began searching for Dario’s water bike, the one he’d ridden on the day I woke up.
I found it parked by the water. I’d never ridden one before. How did it even work? Did it have a key? I was trying to figure it out when a voice stopped me. My heart pounded.
This was it. The end. I turned around to see Dario, Bruno, Veronica, and Maria. The girl must be in trouble now. Dario must have known she’d helped me. But I wasn’t going to give up without a fight.
Dario’s POV
I didn’t know where to look for her. She couldn’t be far. I rushed through the lobby, announcing her disappearance. Everyone started searching. I called Bruno, who arrived quickly.
“She’s not in her room. She’s nowhere around,” he said in Italian.
“She can’t be far. There are guards everywhere. It’ll be hard for her to get past them, unless she has help.”
Veronica approached, asking what was wrong. I ignored her, rubbing my temple.
“Call Arturo. Check the camera footage. There are cameras everywhere on this island. She can’t avoid them all.”
Bruno left, presumably to the control room. Veronica looked at me, and I paced impatiently.
“I’m going to kill her,” I muttered.
“Calm down, Dario. Why are you so worried? She’s probably still on the island. She can go anywhere.”
I stopped and looked at Veronica. She was right. There was no need to panic. But I couldn’t help it. Her defiance infuriated me. She always did what she wanted, regardless of the consequences. Perhaps I’d given her too much freedom. This time, I’d have to end it.
Bruno returned, knowing where she was.
“She’s at the beach. And she had help,” he said, glancing at Veronica.
I looked at Veronica, wondering if she’d helped Katy escape.
“The new girl. I’m sure of it. I’ll go get her.”
Veronica turned and left, while Bruno and I headed for the beach. We spotted her running toward the water bike. What made her think she could escape on that? Did she even know how to ride it? We approached, stopping halfway.
“Katy!” I called out. She froze, shock evident on her face.
Veronica and the new girl joined us. I glared at the girl. I’d deal with her later. For now, it was Katy. She turned to face us, her panic clear.
“You can’t stop me now, Dario,” she said, her voice rising. “I’m not staying on your fucking island anymore. I’ve had enough of you controlling my life.”
“Katy, come here. This is your last chance. Listen to me, and I’ll forgive you. You don’t want to do this.”
“Oh yeah? What makes you think I don’t want to? Of course, I do. And you can let the poor girl go. I tricked her into helping me,” she said, gesturing to the girl.
I looked at the girl, anger burning in me. I slapped her, sending her to the ground. I turned back to Katy, who was stunned. I pulled out my gun and pointed it at her.
“This is your last chance, Katy. Step away from that machine and come here.” I could see her panic, but she didn’t move.
“No, Dario. You can go ahead and shoot me. Even if I listen to you, you’ll still hurt me anyway,” she said, glancing at the girl.
“You can shoot me now or never, because I’m getting off this island.” She climbed onto the bike, and I heard the engine start.
She’d figured out the power button. Smart. But I wasn’t going to let her escape. I doubted she knew how to ride it. She looked back at me, and I still held the gun. I had no choice but to shoot her.
“Katy!” I yelled and fired.
She clutched her arm where I’d shot her. She was about to speed off, so I lunged forward and pulled her off the bike. Bruno took the bike, and I held onto Katy. She looked at me, her eyes slowly closing.
