Chapter 38
“Do you know Yulis?” Xia’er asked.
Xia’er would not fully believe someone’s word based on a single encounter, especially now that she had someone else’s words in her heart that seemed more credible—Yulis.
“High Priestess Yulis? I know her.”
The silver-haired girl froze for a moment, then said after a while, “Uh… Currently, she’s managing the Clock Tower Church temporarily.”
“Do you know where she is?”
“Yes, she’s not far from Clock Tower Lane District.”
“Take me to see her.”
“No problem.”
Seeing Xia’er finally put away her murderous intent, the silver-haired girl let out a long sigh of relief.
She did not know how this ‘Avenger’ suddenly appeared in the tightly sealed Clock Tower Lane District, but if this ‘Avenger’ wanted to meet Yulis, it was good news for her.
The Tribunal of the Salvation Goddess Religion was notorious for its rebellious nature, and she did not want to get involved in their affairs. She only wanted to trace the source of the epidemic here.
Xia’er slightly loosened the shadow’s hold, allowing the silver-haired girl to lead the way, while Xia’er followed cautiously from behind.
After all, a simulation required 10 Mortality Points, and she did not want to die mysteriously without any intelligence gathered.
There was still one thing she couldn’t understand: why, when such a significant event occurred in Clock Tower Lane District, the temporary manager of the Clock Tower Church, Yulis, was not in Clock Tower Lane District? What could be the reason?
The silver-haired girl did not seem to resist much, perhaps due to some effect of the Art of Conversation. She was merely leading the way.
Xia’er knew every street in Clock Tower Lane District, so she was not worried about being led astray.
Soon, they reached a checkpoint leaving Clock Tower Lane District. The silver-haired girl walked up to the soldiers, exchanged a few words, and showed them the badge on her chest. Then, she turned around and waved at Xia’er.
With the silver-haired girl’s guidance, Xia’er successfully passed through Clock Tower Lane District without anyone in the army finding it surprising, as they could not see the shadow clinging to her back.
Outside Clock Tower Lane District, a certain distance seemed to have been cleared. Along the way, there were military tents until they approached the next intersection, where people began to appear more frequently.
Xia’er noticed that the closer she got to Clock Tower Lane District, the quieter the muttering in her ears became, until only a faint whisper remained.
Xia’er also saw a reporter wearing a gauze mask, holding a notebook, approach the silver-haired girl as if asking something. But when the reporter heard the silver-haired girl say she didn’t know, she jumped back in fright and ran away hurriedly.
Soon, the silver-haired girl stopped in front of a hotel. The reception desk had no owner, only a sign reading “No Rooms Available Today” hung at the entrance. She turned back to look at Xia’er not far away.
“It’s right here, 202,” the silver-haired girl shouted towards Xia’er, “The Salvation Goddess Religion has taken over this hotel.”
“Go upstairs and ask her to come down,” Xia’er replied, “Tell her Duwen is here.”
“Duwen is here… How could someone with such a beautiful name have such an unpleasant name…” The silver-haired girl muttered as she entered the hotel.
Xia’er slowly retreated to a nearby alley, keeping an eye on the hotel entrance and upper floors. As long as the silver-haired girl was inside the hotel, she would remain within the extension of the shadow’s reach.
After about a minute, Xia’er suddenly felt a sharp pain throughout her body. The shadow was rapidly being pulled back to her side, accompanied by a flash of white light.
A tall, ethereal figure clad in white was dragging the silver-haired girl away, while Xiaer…
He held onto the black shadow’s collar, silently gazing in Xia’er’s direction.
There was a faint glow emanating from its body, hovering behind it like a pair of drooping light wings.
Then, the white shadow waved towards Xia’er’s direction, and released Xia’er’s black shadow collar.
In that instant, Xia’er felt a sudden disappearance of the pain throughout his body, and the black shadow, startled, directly burrowed into Xia’er’s own shadow behind him.
Is this Yulis’s shadow…
Xia’er knew that Yulis had the ability to make objects float, which should be similar to his own black shadow. However, this was the first time he truly saw Yulis’s white shadow. At this moment, Xia’er was half-convinced that the silver-haired girl wasn’t lying to him; she was indeed Yulis.
When Xia’er was brought by the white shadow to room 202, the white shadow pushed open the door, and Xia’er saw what was inside.
Yulis, dressed in the grand robe of the Salvation Goddess Religion, sat in the center of the room on a sofa. Her mask was hung above her forehead, revealing her tightly closed eyes and her long silver hair.
The silver-haired girl from earlier was now sitting on the floor, hugging Yulis’s thigh.
“Sis! It’s him!” Seeing Xia’er standing at the doorway, the silver-haired girl pointed sharply at Xia’er, then quickly stood up and hid behind Yulis.
So they are sisters? No wonder they both have silver hair.
But why aren’t sisters in the same organization?
Xia’er noticed a hint of confusion on Yulis’s face. Xia’er knew that she needed to prove her identity.
Xia’er politely closed the door and walked straight towards Yulis. From his satchel, he took out two notebooks and handed them to the silver-haired girl behind Yulis. At the same time, his right hand reached out and took Yulis’s hand, pressing it against his face.
“Read it.” Xia’er said almost commandingly to the silver-haired girl hiding behind Yulis.
Hiding behind Yulis, the silver-haired girl seemed bolder, no longer as timid as before. She snatched the notebooks, then quickly retreated, saying fiercely, “Fine, I’ll read it!”
At first, Yulis still looked somewhat confused, but as the silver-haired girl began to read the notes bit by bit, Yulis’s expression turned serious.
When the silver-haired girl finished reading the notes, Xia’er spoke first: “Thomas is dead, and I found this on him. Thomas was my enemy, and I drank the ‘Avenger’ potion.”
Xia’er’s quick speech left Yulis, who was about to ask questions, momentarily stunned, her mouth wide open for a moment before closing again.
Xia’er explained everything succinctly, like a player skipping through scenes in a second playthrough.
“Is there anything else you’d like to ask?” Xia’er asked Yulis.
“Yes,” Yulis nodded, “Why are you pressing my hand against your face?”
Xia’er: “??”
“Don’t you need to touch someone to perceive their emotions and the truth of their words?” Xia’er asked.
“No need,” Yulis shook her head, puzzled. “Just getting close is enough.”
Then why did you pinch my face for so long!?
Realizing he had been tricked, Xia’er let go of Yulis’s hand.
“Thank you, sir. You’ve resolved a troublesome matter for the Salvation Goddess Religion, completing a task I should have done,” Yulis stood up, her expression turning serious. “May I ask, what do you need? I can offer reasonable compensation.”
“I want to know,” Xia’er began, “what happened in the Clock Tower Lane District, and if the Dehydration Syndrome is caused by Extraordinary powers.”
“Also, how did the collaboration between the goddess religion and the Redemption Society come about?”
