Chapter 155
At this point, I couldn’t call for any more gacha pulls. Sena had popped out three times in a row from the draws.
Instead of feeling jealous or resentful, most reactions were simply disbelief.
[Another one appears!]
[How is this even possible?]
[Sena herself!]
[Catalyst performance confirmed!]
[Human catalyst ㄷㄷ]
[What if Mollru is actually Sena’s reincarnation?]
[OMG]
[They’re both pretty, though.]
[The souls in the game react ㅇㅇ I’m a shaman blessed by the gods, but there’s some credibility to that.]
[That’s nonsense ㄴ]
[Well, since we’re at it, should we give it another go? Let’s see if Sena pops up in the next draw, too.]
“No, I think I’ll stop here with the gacha.”
I had decided to limit myself to about 200 pulls from the start. It’s regrettable I couldn’t pull any other 6-star units besides Sena, but stopping here feels right.
After all, having Sena alone is plenty for playing the game, and spending more money feels wasteful. I’m not a professional gacha streamer, and in my opinion, pulling about 200 times is quite a lot.
At this point, you really need a passion for the game to go any further. Otherwise, only those who have lost all reason to the gacha system do that. They exist in droves across various platforms, including Switch.
These folks host streams that provide a subtle thrill just from watching. Some spend anywhere from tens to thousands on just gacha.
Viewers feel a primal pleasure and vicarious satisfaction watching them spend all that money. At the same time, they mock how foolish those people are. Gacha systems are notoriously dishonest, and it’s rare to get the desired items even after pouring in that much cash.
I think similarly. Why would I burn tens or hundreds on a random draw where the items may or may not appear? Sure, there’s excitement during the action, but afterward, the truth hits you hard.
Even if I’m raking in some decent income lately, I can’t afford to waste my bank account on such economic folly after living as a commoner for so long.
With the future of Crown Ring uncertain, I wonder if I’ll continue playing it at all. I’ve never played anything like this before. I only recorded it myself, so I would never have touched it otherwise.
It’s likely to be one-off content, so I don’t find a reason to spend that kind of money.
Still, having gotten this far, now that I’ve pulled Sena, I should at least play for a while. I’m curious about how the game progresses.
It has a tag of being a strategy simulation, so I might need to think a bit.
I started the tutorial and followed the system’s guidance to set up a party with the characters I currently have.
6-star dealer Sena, 4-star tank Yuzuki, 4-star dealer Jakun, and 4-star supporter Aria.
[Why are there two male characters??]
[There’s no one else to use, lol.]
[I thought it’d be an all-female party.]
[Wow, just Sena alone is 6-star.]
[Sena is protecting Crown Ring!!]
[Yet 5-stars out here are all trash and I still have to use 4-stars is hilarious, lol.]
[The 4-stars aren’t much better, haha.]
[Seriously, aside from Sena, they all look like trash, how does that happen?]
[It’s just Sena pulling all the weight www]
“Seriously… this is totally a one-man team.”
A one-man team is not ideal. What is a team supposed to be? Helping each other out, working in sync, that’s what a team means. But this isn’t even a synchronized effort; it’s more like the others are being dragged along by sheer power difference.
If Sena bails out of this party, the rest will regret it in despair. That’s how significant Sena’s role is.
But there’s nothing to be done about it. This was the best I could manage. I built this party with the best performing characters I had that could sync with Sena’s skill set.
This squad is what I must go with.
-Look over there, Hero! It’s an evil undead swarm. Please repel them through battle before they reach the village!
I proceeded with the story mode. I’m the hero, and the squad I set up are my companions.
As per the guide’s voice, skeletons and zombies, along with piles of corpses, began to swarm toward us.
So, I just have to stop those then? The party starts moving in the formation I set up.
-Die-!
-The holy light shall protect you…
Since it was the early part of the game, the battles ended quite swiftly. The characters simply beat down the enemies with basic attacks and didn’t even get to use skills once.
It all seemed too easy, and I breezed through the stages.
But if it keeps being this easy, can we even call it a game? Before long, I was faced with a challenge.
“Wait, these guys aren’t dying?”
We encountered a bunch of golems in the ruins. The boss of stage three had that unique sturdiness compared to the squishy enemies I faced thus far.
Of course, the 6-star dealer Sena easily broke through their defenses, but the others were an issue. The rest of the characters started going down one by one, unable to fulfill their roles.
The frontline collapsed, and Sena, who was strong in damage but weak in health, also retreated from the battlefield, leading to a game over.
[Sena’s skill isn’t an AoE?]
[Sena can’t use her skills, kind of lame?]
[No, no, this isn’t Sena’s fault.]
[Sena’s mana pool is decent, but for skills, the front needs to hold up a bit longer, and it’s getting breached too quickly.]
[Let’s just banish Jakun first; this guy is too lame.]
[For real, he’s a weakling.]
[It’d be better to use another tank like Yuzuki instead.]
“Reinforce the tank line… is the damage sufficient?”
To me, the damage looked insufficient, but according to the viewers who had played ahead, they claimed that as long as someone held the front, Sena could refill mana and unleash her skills, compensating for any lacking damage.
Come to think of it, Sena was conceptually a wizard. A wizard needs to gather mana to use their skills effectively; just powering through with regular attacks wouldn’t be enough. Up until now, basic attacks got the job done, but it seemed that wasn’t the case anymore.
“Okay, let’s try it like this once, and if it doesn’t work out, we’ll change the squad again.”
I swapped out Jakun, who had already gained a reputation among the viewers for being a “weakling,” and put 4-star tank Ejiis in his place.
Changing from 1 tank and 2 dealers to 2 tanks and 1 dealer.
I just wish this knight, who possesses skills that boosts the entire team’s defense, can hold the line longer. Typically, knights are responsible for the team’s health.
I wondered if having Ejiis, a holy knight, and Sena, a ghost, in the same party was even allowed, but it seems the game didn’t reflect such fantasy settings. Well, it wouldn’t have been an issue from the start if that was the case. The 4-star supporter Aria in the party also had the setting of a deeply faithful priest.
“Alright, let’s go, you guys.”
-The golems in the ruins have begun rampaging. If this carries on, the ruins will collapse…! We must stop those wretched boulders!
With that declaration from NPC Thompson, the battle commenced.
Characters exchanged blows with the golems. Up until now, there wasn’t much different than before. The change happened when the newly inputted knight Ejiis started using her skills.
-Look at me-!
A multi-target taunt. At the same moment, a shield of light enveloped the entire team.
Good, they’re holding out better than before. Ejiis was clearly performing differently from Jakun, who was knocked out without even chipping away at the golem’s health. It seems Jakun truly is a weakling.
Sena also diligently dealt basic hits to gather mana. Her mana bar was about halfway filled.
I didn’t know what the skill’s power would be, but if she could take out even just half of the remaining golems, we’d likely win this battle smoothly.
But then it happened.
“Oh no, this is dangerous. Get out of the way!”
With Thompson’s warning, the golem’s eyes glowed red, and it took on a foreboding aura.
Then, it charged up a laser beam with a distinct “Ziiiiing” sound. This was a move that only bosses could use, and the laser hit Ejiis, knocking her out.
-Those who blaspheme will face judgment…
“No, Ejiis!”
[That knight! T_T]
[Is it a one-hit kill?]
[It just seems to pack a lot of damage? She was already half health, right?]
[Looks like we’re heading for another failure.]
[The failure conditions are looking sharp right now.]
[Ejiis fell, and the defense buff she provided is gone.]
The only hope left was Yuzuki, who was trying to hold on, but the speed of his HP bar dropping didn’t look good; he was wobbling too.
Now, we had only one thing left to trust.
“Sena’s mana is almost full. We still have a chance.”
Sena’s ultimate, Frost Storm. Given how much mana it consumed, its power should be significant.
Besides, I had pulled three Senas and leveled her up to 2; she was essentially a one-man army.
The moment Sena used her skill, those boulders wouldn’t stand a chance.
And then, it happened. Sena’s mana filled up completely, and the skill automatically activated.
-Let the ice flowers bloom on the battlefield.
With a dramatic cutscene of Sena opening her eyes, six-star effects engulfed the screen.
A chilling wind, scattering shards of ice. Once the five seconds of the skill ended, there was not a single golem left standing.
“What the hell is that power?”
This was beyond my expectations. I thought she would only take out a couple of golems, but she wiped them all out in one fell swoop. It was as though a great sorcerer were involved. One individual completely changed the tide of the battle.
[Sena truly is amazing.]
[Wait, so these guys that needed 20 hits to die just got mowed down?]
[Wizards do damage with skills, not basic attacks!]
[Sena is indeed 0 tier.]
[Just placing a tank in front to hold out, and she’ll wipe everything! ㄷㄷ]
It was a situation deserving of the title “My Sena is too strong…”
The idea that an individual can’t defeat a group is a widely-known fact, yet… when that individual becomes superhuman, it seems the rules no longer apply.
