1 - It's Not Racial Discrimination...(1)
Everyone who works has probably imagined it at least once.
A perfect company where the salary is jaw-droppingly high, the treatment and welfare benefits are top-notch, and there are no human scum forcing you to join hiking groups on holidays.
Of course, such a dream workplace is like a unicorn.
Realistically speaking, the possibility of encountering something like that in real life is close to zero. Unless a miracle happens, you’d never get an opportunity to work at such a place.
…But a miracle did happen.
Like an old man I helped without much thought turned out to be an important figure, and that grandfather took a liking to me and gave me a golden opportunity.
And fortunately, I succeeded in grabbing that opportunity. Through such a series of coincidences, I finally obtained it.
The dream workplace that should have only existed in fantasy.
Now I don’t need to worry about making a living anymore. My annual salary has increased nearly thirty times, and my social status has skyrocketed.
Maybe it’s because all my worries have disappeared, but even though the commute should be painful, my steps feel as light as if I’m about to fly.
And so, as I arrived at my dream workplace…
“Someone like me could never be a professor! You need to cancel my appointment right now!”
I was submitting my resignation to the HR manager.
And I did it less than 30 minutes after arriving at work.
“…What on earth are you saying? You’re quitting? A professor position at the Academy? And on your first day?”
The person looked at me with bewilderment.
Even after confirming that I wasn’t under a curse or mind-control magic, they still seemed to doubt my mental state.
Well, thinking about it, it’s a natural reaction.
A dream job where you can be respected by everyone and receive the best treatment. It would be strange if someone who wanted to quit such a job after just one day seemed sane.
But my resolve was firm.
That’s because I had just remembered.
Memories of my past life. My life as an office worker in South Korea who occasionally found joy in reading web novels.
And my reader’s intuition was warning me.
‘Shit, this is clearly an academy setting.’
That I wasn’t reincarnated into an ordinary fantasy world. This was a world inside a novel, specifically a web novel with an academy setting.
Like how a school for kids is suspiciously treated as an important institution with enormous power, or how the principal is a polymorphed beautiful dragon girl.
With this much evidence, I can’t deny it.
Since I’ve read so many works, I don’t know exactly which one this is yet. But this is definitely an academy setting.
And if that’s the case, a problem arises.
A huge problem that I absolutely cannot overlook.
‘I’ll get involved. I’ll definitely get involved and die.’
Terrorism?
A staple in academy stories that would be disappointing if not included.
Infiltrating Demons?
This is now just a mandatory element.
A final boss who’s obsessed with a school for kids for some reason?
A long-standing tradition dating back to noseless Voldy.
‘This isn’t a school, it’s a death trap.’
What good is good treatment?
In the end, it’s of no use if I die. In that sense, this is the worst of the worst workplaces.
Therefore.
“I absolutely cannot take the professor position.”
I declared with a firm tone. Expressing my determination to absolutely refuse standing at the center of events without knowledge of the original story.
And the HR manager who heard my words,
“I understand. Please wait a moment.”
Accepted my declaration of resignation without any complaints.
Naturally, my face turned to one of confusion.
It wouldn’t be strange for them to complain, saying things like how the academic schedule would be completely messed up because of my inexplicable whim, or even how the Holy Maiden and the Second Princess are enrolling this year and I’m causing trouble for them.
In such a situation, they’re accepting my resignation as if it’s only natural?
Lucky, fortunate.
I could think and move on like that, but…
‘This is too strange.’
Looking closely at her eyes again, there was definite suspicion in them. She seemed to be manipulating something under the desk as if sending an emergency signal to someone.
My mind started racing naturally.
‘…Come to think of it.’
What I’m wearing right now is a custom-made suit provided by the Empire. A high-quality item close to an artifact with the Empire’s unique sigil carving technology generously applied.
In addition, engraved on the back of my left hand is a space inscription provided by the Empire. This is also a precious item whose value cannot be calculated.
Moreover, two months ago, I received numerous magical techniques from the Empire’s court mage through training.
And all those techniques are exclusively monopolized by the Imperial family, provided only to Academy professors as a special exception.
Yet, after enjoying all these benefits and receiving various important information from the Academy in advance as a professor, I announced on my first day.
I’m quitting as of today.
…A spy.
Without further consideration, I’m a spy from another country. An agent to steal the Empire’s secret magical techniques and confidential information.
Surely, I would lose my head without a chance to explain.
Having assessed the situation, my judgment was swift.
I immediately build a magical formula. I place my hand on the HR manager’s shoulder and immediately open my mouth to cast a suggestion.
[I never came here abruptly and said strange things. Since the entrance exam is about to begin, I just asked where the exam venue is.]
Not a professor but an ordinary low-level office worker.
Moreover, a mind exhausted from overwork easily falls under my mediocre magical formula.
With dreamy eyes, she recited the location of the exam venue to me. She even added a kind advice that I should hurry or I’d be late.
‘This is driving me crazy.’
I don’t want to go. I want to throw away everything, whether it’s the entrance exam or the role of an interviewer, and run away.
That was my honest feeling, but if I really ran away here, that would be the perfect action to be branded as a spy.
In the end, I only had one choice left.
…I trudged towards the exam venue.
The Imperial Academy’s final entrance exam.
Sitting here as an interviewer, after various considerations, I came to a conclusion.
Termination.
Perhaps that might be the optimal means.
My directly kicking away this good position is too suspicious. But if a flaw is found in me, and the Academy side expels me?
They might take various measures to prevent information leakage, but they wouldn’t take my life.
I could peacefully enjoy the rest of my life.
But the problem is…
‘I just can’t figure out what kind of act would naturally get me fired.’
Speaking bluntly, if I were to cause a knife incident right now, I could be fired immediately. But this is definitely a NG.
Trying to get fired in such an unnatural way would only increase suspicions. Isn’t it too obvious that I’m deliberately trying to mess things up?
I need to cause a problem big enough to get fired, but without any awkwardness in the process to avoid suspicion.
Meeting those two conditions simultaneously was not easy. Even being harmful wasn’t something to be taken lightly.
‘…Maybe I should consider other methods.’
With increasing worries, my head started to spin. As I sighed and held my forehead, a piercing gaze came from the side.
“Ahem.”
An old professor glares at me while clearing his throat.
A look that severely reprimands me for not concentrating while the final interview is in progress, asking what random thoughts I’m having as a teacher.
I almost want to say that I just remembered my past life after falling down the stairs just 30 minutes ago, so isn’t it stranger to expect me to be calm?
But I’d only be called crazy if I said that. In the end, I decided to go along with him, swallowing my sigh.
“Candidate number 12, please enter.”
I don’t think I can fully concentrate on the interview in this situation, but I should at least be able to ask some seemingly appropriate questions.
With such thoughts, I looked at the student who entered and…
For a moment, I was speechless.
I could feel my pupils naturally dilating.
It’s not because the student who entered was a bigshot like a princess or a holy maiden, nor because they were a character from a work I knew.
It’s because I realized.
The one and only clever plan to achieve my goal.
There’s no need to hesitate. I wasn’t foolish enough to consider conscience or anything when my life was at stake.
I immediately stood up from my seat.
Naturally, everyone’s attention turned to me.
But disregarding all those gazes, I frowned. As if I couldn’t believe the current situation, with an expression full of disgust, I said,
“A cotton-picking n*gger kid dares to apply to our Academy without knowing his place?”
An extremely despicable statement.
In an instant, everyone’s faces turned to shock.
A professor uttering such words at the Imperial Academy, where equality is the motto, would be unprecedented in the Empire’s history, so it was an understandable reaction.
“Have you lost your mind? What kind of nonsense…”
The old professor from earlier scolds me, but I’m not one to be intimidated here. I instead brazenly scolded him back.
“In my view, it’s rather you all who have lost your minds. Are you really going to let such a hideous thing into the Academy?”
At those words, the Elf professor exudes killing intent.
A deadly threat follows, saying that if I don’t shut up immediately, they’ll make me shut my mouth directly.
But I didn’t stop.
The newly hired professor turned out to be an extreme racist. So they got fired.
What could be a more perfect scenario than this?
I would certainly be able to leave this place naturally without any suspicion of being a spy.
“I’m disappointed. I expected a bit more from the renowned professors of the Imperial Academy. But in the end, you’re all just low-level humans.”
I utter another statement full of supremacist mentality. This would have stacked the maximum amount of hostility from the professors.
Now, all that’s left is the finishing touch.
I pointed at the black boy and shouted.
“Get out of here right now, you ugly thing! Did you really think you could hide your hideous nature in front of me?”
A voice that echoed so loudly it could be heard outside the interview room. At this point, my dismissal is already confirmed.
Drip, drip. The sound of tears falling to the floor makes me feel a bit guilty for pushing a child too hard, even though it’s necessary.
But this is for my survival, so there’s no helping it.
Anyway, his scores were high, so he would be admitted regardless of the interview results. After I’m fired, I’ll use my modern knowledge cheat to gather gold, and I’ll also set aside some for that friend.
I looked at the boy with such thoughts.
But… something seemed off.
The boy wasn’t crying at all. What had fallen to the floor wasn’t tears but cold sweat from the boy.
The black boy was clearly disturbed.
Suddenly, a pair of horns sprouted from his head.
Clearly revealing his inverted eyes. Wings of ominous black light emerged, tearing through his back.
The boy, no, the demon exclaimed with a shocked face.
[How on earth did you discern my true identity!]
So…
Something was going very, very wrong.
