Chapter 95: (1)
Three days had passed since Linda returned to the Markain family.
“Now it’s time to see how Count Armis will react. It’s too quiet.”
Kaiyan had thought that once the news of Vyarolf’s capture reached Count Armis, he would take some immediate action. However, it was surprisingly quiet, contrary to his expectations.
It seemed as if the Armis family didn’t care about Vyarolf at all.
“Hmm… Nobles like them aren’t the type to sit idly by when something like this happens. What kind of scheme are they cooking up?”
Kaiyan had already thought carefully about how to feed information to Count Armis. Now, what remained was preventing any tricks that the Count might try to play, but breaking into the Armis family like that wouldn’t be easy. Delaying the situation like this would be detrimental to the Armis family in the end.
“Rieka, have you set up magic in the place where Vyarolf and Delonce are?”
[Yes! Don’t worry! We’ll know as soon as anyone enters!]
As a precaution, Kaiyan used one of the emergency scrolls he had been carrying.
It was a magic that would sound an alarm if anyone unauthorized attempted to enter the underground cell where Vyarolf and Delonce were held.
“Unless Count Armis is a complete fool, he won’t just declare war on the Markain family.”
On the first day, Kaiyan had investigated how the Mareon Empire’s bureaucracy worked through Markain family officials, and the result was that Count Armis currently had limited options for action.
The main reason for this was that he had already confessed to attempting to kill Linda through torture, even if it wasn’t true. If Count Armis were to declare war recklessly now, an investigation would certainly come from Mareon Castle.
“Fortunately, according to the officials, the Armis family isn’t that influential, but we can’t ignore them completely. So, Rieka, stick with Linda for a few more days.”
[You mean to protect Linda, right?]
“Yes, it seems like the Markain knights are too few in number and strength to rely solely on them. And… no.”
The issue wasn’t just their strength, but the fact that Kaiyan couldn’t trust them.
Delonce, who had lived as a Markain knight for decades, had tried to betray their lord and kill Linda. It was impossible to know when the knights currently loyal to Linda might change sides.
[Alright! If anything unexpected happens, I’ll use the emergency magic scroll!]
“…Sure, don’t hesitate to use it, especially since we can gather G-Points to buy more later.”
[Then I’ll be on my way now! See you later!]
Rieka shook her short forelimbs a few times and then leaped off the terrace towards the outside.
Now that Linda’s safety was assured, all that remained was to wait for Count Armis to make his move.
“Let’s finish this quickly, Count Armis.”
Even the late hour looked ominous, and five suspicious individuals with masked faces concealed their bodies while observing the Markain mansion.
“Are you sure that Mr. Vyarolf is in the underground cell?”
“Yes, we confirmed it through a servant who has been passing us information for a long time.”
“That’s right…”
The individuals searching for Vyarolf were members of the Armis Family.
These shadows were assassins trained in Aura, kept secretly by high-ranking noble families. Their main mission was, quite literally, assassinating enemies. They were the ones used by noble families to handle dirty work.
“All right. In case of unexpected situations, two of you will guard outside, and the rest of us will enter. Number 4 and number 5 will guard outside.”
“Yes, understood.”
“Let’s go.”
The masked figure with the number 1 on their mask gestured to the masked figures with numbers 4 and 5, who were standing guard outside the mansion. They approached the mansion’s guards quietly, so silently that on this quiet night, one wouldn’t hear even a footstep unless they focused.
“Canon, I’ve been thinking… instead of being soldiers, how about supporting the newly discovered gold mine as miners?”
“What? What kind of crazy talk is that?”
The two guards, unaware of the visitors, were having a casual conversation.
“No, hear me out. When do you think we’ll make big money by being soldiers?”
“But what’s different about being miners?”
“It’s different! Just think about sneaking away a few gold nuggets from the gold mine. How about that?”
“This guy’s an idiot. You could get executed on the spot if you get caught! You might die just for a little money. Ugh… I can’t believe I’m friends with someone like this… Huh? What…?”
When Canon, one of the soldiers, turned his head toward his speechless friend, he saw a dagger flying towards his head.
Pwoosh!
Canon fell helplessly. And next to him, his friend was already lying on the ground with a dagger in his head.
Numbers 4 and 5 swiftly concealed their bodies in a secluded spot, hid the corpses, and signaled Number 1. The rest of the masked figures, including Number 1, quickly approached the underground storage.
“Someone may be guarding inside. Let’s deal with it quickly.”
“Yes.”
With daggers in hand, the masked figures opened the door to the underground storage and entered swiftly. However, to their surprise, there was no one behind the door. Puzzled, one of the masked figures raised their head.
“Hmm… No guards? What on earth… For now, let’s go down.”
Keeping low and cautiously scanning their surroundings, the masked figures descended the stairs leading underground.
A while later, the silent group arrived in the underground cell. They saw Vyarolf and Delonce, the two individuals tied up in a crude iron cage.
Number 1 fell into thought as they looked at the sleeping pair.
“Is this a trap? Even if it is, we’re in a situation where we can kill them right now. Well… it doesn’t matter.”
The masked figure nodded and quickly approached the iron cage containing Vyarolf.
The orders given to the shadows were clear: kill Vyarolf and Delonce.
Even if this were a trap, they were in a situation to kill these two right now. There was no need to think otherwise.
“Hmm… What’s that noise… Oh!”
Perhaps hearing the footsteps of the masked figures, Vyarolf woke up, surprised, and whimpered as he got up from his position. Delonce, who had been sleeping next to him, also woke up, carefully getting to his feet.
“Who, who are you?”
